Alright... lets do this. Assassins Creed 3. So far in this series of retrospectives that I've done, I've only really spoken about games that I consider to be incredible. Which, y'know, just makes sense, because who wants to spend 2 weeks playing a game they hate for the 6th time. Well, apparently, I do, so today, as you can probably tell, we're gonna be looking back at the most divisive assassins creed game.
Back in 2012, ubisoft had some big shoes to fill. Coming off of one of, if not the best gaming trilogies to ever grace this earth, Ubisoft new it was time to enter a new chapter, to break out of the games and the engine that had came before, and enter a new dawn of assassins creed. And i mean, they did succeed in adapting the gameplay formulas that came before.
But, I wouldn't say the exactly improved on it.
Thanks for watching, if you did enjoy it'd really help me out if you could hit like and if you're new here, hit subscribe.

@@patrikmiles9342 originally the devs were going to make Haythem the protagonist but scrapped the idea because of AC Forsaken. It’s a real shame and Rogue is a game that has too many flaws to be loved. I still hope that one day they release an origin story game for Haythem. I mean the best AC games are the ones that have sequels or at least continuity and the fans want that so I have no clue what Ubisoft is thinking by completely changing time periods each time. Hell, all twelve major installments could take place during the same time just in different parts of the world and it wouldn’t lose the variety of its locales and cultures.

@@tankdogization @tankdogization I agree wholeheartedly. I'd even go so far as to say all games should be based on skill. After all as human beings we want to be rewarded for skillful work not because the game tells me I did something good. I'm a programmer and to me, it seems it was also easier and faster for them to code in damage sponge enemies instead of a more complex and nuanced stealth system. The not being able to have a shield thing was most likely an artificial way of increasing difficulty, but not in a good way. Just a way that would take more grinding. Odyssey has an amazing world. But that makes it feels worse after getting into the lackluster gameplay. I personally don't enjoy feeling like a god in a game, because there's ultimately no point if all I have to do is button mash all day. Apparently their next game will be based in medieval Germany and France so we'll see if they mess that up. Lol.

Also ignoring the fact that Achilles' didn't want to train him and tried to drive him away because he's a sad and broken old man who lost his son as well pretty much everything he ever cared about. His son dying was a random tragedy but everything else is because of the war between Templars and Assassins his motivations are so clear and obvious as day. He doesn't want to relive that pain potentially again but nooo it's bad because Connor is stoic and Achilles' isn't up front about his feelings that are so painful to him. Also the lack of regard for Connor's various different motivations besides revenge against Charles Lee was annoying. I didn't really think that was his sole main motivation at all after his village is burned to the ground there is a huge timeskip and he seems to have moved on as much as he could from what happened with no intentions of revenge, he is at peace staying in his village and hunting but his desire to leave is based on the encroaching colonists in general and grows stronger as he sees more of them settling into his people's land. This is the first conversation he has with Kanen'tó:kon after the timeskip. So many people misunderstand Connor he's not this brutal mindless savage out for revenge and nothing else. He is a calm & reflective man just because he says to Charles Lee "I'll find you" when he's a child doesn't mean that's gonna be his sole motivation for his entire life the time skip immediately after is meant to show you this he's a way more complex character than that. When Connor sees Lee for the first time in forever he seems surprised to see him, you'd think he would be tracking Lee constantly and know he in the same place as him but he doesn't it's like he's forgotten about him. Why? Because he's trying to save his village! Not just kill Charles Lee or any one thing. Juno shows him in his vision that he must become an assassin to avoid his villages' destruction that is his motivation for leaving the village once again it's not Charles Lee. Connor isn't like "it's time I finally go after Charles Lee after all this time of training and preparation" noooo he doesn't even mention him at all. Idk why I care or seek out analysis on this series anymore. People are just so biased & clueless or both there is so few people who just appreciate these games for their strengths and understand their actual flaws. I am a fan of this dudes content but this is not a great review of the game 😔

However, I definitely disagree with you about AC3 and think you’ve completely mischaracterized Connor’s motives in an attempt to paint his actions as nonsensical, disregarding his constant principles as an assassin in the process. Also, the idea that Connor being manipulated by Juno is a negative is beyond me. Ezio was manipulated in the same manner and was essentially only a messenger between the Isu and Desmond. The only difference is that Ezio eventually realized this at the end of Revelations. Anyways, love the content even if I disagree with you and hope the hard work pays off. Dude, no, AC3 was actually better than you give it credit for. Connor had character development, it was just far more subtle and nuanced. He is a reserved, quiet, and honor-driven character who leans heavily into his heritage. When compared to the more care-free, flirtatious, charismatic, partyboy that was Ezio Auditore da Firenze...well, he comes across as uninteresting. He isn't meant to appeal to you in the same way. The Homestead was closer to the main content than you apparently treated it. Connor being able to craft his gear is directly related to the Homestead, his character shining the most happens in the Homestead where he feels most at peace. The overall world was actually fairly well built....for a Native American Assassin. Yes, it was dumbed down a lot, and no Connor shouldn't have been shoehorned into every historical moment. The real issue is you compare the game to the Ezio trilogy when really only the modern day was in any way connected to the Ezio trilogy. Nostalgia and favoritism blinded you to how a radically different character grew and developed, therefore ruining the game for you.

Well said. By no mean I love ezio, but people alway using him at an define on how all main characters in the series should act. People tend to forget that people are built different and in fact different in thinking and acting. People always say like Connor act like a child no charscter development bla bla. I said stop! That just because they don't understand him. Like you said he an quite and hard to understand man. It show in the Homestead mission where everyone only affairs of him at first but in time things grow and the community expand we can see how much they they cherish and look up to him not as and second to a landlord but as a friend, a nice and straight forward neighbor thay always put actions before words on what he believes to be the right thing. Hence some girl even make him walked her down the aisle to her spouse. To explore the inside of an silence/quite protagonist like this you have to look at the people around him, on how they act and how they treat him. I wish Ubisoft didn't make them as extra content, all the character development was in them.

@@bish0p3473 I can acknowledge that Connor sounds more monotone than the others. However, I would like to quickly say that emotion and enthusiasm drive the voice to sound the way it does. For someone who is working to contain their emotions and remain relatively calm in their duties, it isn't going to sound as boisterous when they talk. Now if someone like Ezio, Edward, or even Haytham and Altair were to talk, they tend to show more emotional inflection purely because their characters are more open and outgoing. Though honestly, this was probably more because the VA didn't do a good job avoiding monotone. Even if fans can come up with a solid reason, it still likely was just a poor VA.

I think the greatness of Connor and the point of the character resides in him being the victim. He doesn’t grow much or change but that’s because he is a stoic, determined and relentless warrior. He gets played around from both sides, suffering from different angles (his people are doomed regardless of the winners, his father is transformed into an enemy…) and struggling while maintaining his path and objective, that is: saving his people and trying to act honorably. He is strong, he is angry and frustrated, but that’s because, regardless of being a victim of several and tragic circumstances, he still pushes through.

But for American players, Boston and New York in the game represents a historical era that they grew up hearing only stories about. There is a scene where Connor comes back to his village and finally understands the Revolutionaries are no different than the British. Connor seems to understand he has been manipulated and that his entire life work was a waste of time. Problem is, that scene appears after the credits, so almost nobody has actually seen it... Personally speaking, I have to say every single word Haytham has told Connor on the roof made absolute sense to me, and actually since AC3 I favor the Templars. It is also a bit weird that throughout the first 4 games the Assassins and the Templars are pretty much equal in their power, while all the sudden since AC3 the Assassins become a haunted tiny group facing a global organization. Altair and Ezio have fought for the creed, for peace, for stability, while since AC3 we see more and more characters which are not even proper Assassins, and those who are speak almost nothing of the creed, they create political chaos and actually worsen the lives of the people (for example, Achilles destroying Lisbon). Therefore I really believe the Templars, while they may not be always moral, at least have a vision, while the Assassins just kinda oppose them cuz that's what they do...
@natchu96

That's basically the Colonial Brotherhood in a nutshell, really. They stopped being about freedom and peace and just opposed the Templars for the sake of it. In that regard Shay's purge of them feels completely deserved and a naive greenhorn like Connor, who had noble intentions but failed to see harsh reality for all too long, had to pick up the pieces.

Disagree a lot but it’s a good video! You put your points across articulately and intelligently I love Connor, particularly as a contrast to Ezio, he’s full of sadness anger and tragedy, torn between his native people and the revolutionaries and has believable negative traits like being single minded naive and manipulable and that compromise speech was the best in the series Combat is great, Connor feels like an absolute brute and that assassin tomahawk is iconic Parkour isn’t the most fun but I did enjoy running through the tree tops Sailing was fantastic fun I love the complexity and depth shown between assassins and templars, Haytham is one of the best characters in the series and I love the relationship between him and Connor The homestead is fantastic though, it really adds a lot to Connor and made me want to recruit more people so it wasn’t just meaningless like monterigioni But it is a flawed game, the colonial cities are pretty flat and boring, the prologue with Haytham is waaaaay too long and predictively templar, the economics system is pretty badly explained and implemented, it’s really reliant on the historical context with characters, locations and events seeming to take the focus, the end of the modern day also left a sour taste

The positive: - Naval combat is my favourite innovation in the franchise. Shame it wasn’t featured much in the main storyline. - The upgrade to the assassin recruits feature is also nice, and it would have been better if they were present in the main storyline, if there was any substance to it. - Child Conor is great. After the time skip following his training though, I didn’t care about him as he pretty much became a vessel for the story and for the player to engage. It felt like the only thing Achilles taught him was how to fight. - Climbing trees is a great innovation as well, shame the paths are linear. - Hunting animals is a nice treat, but when it comes to predators, it would have been better if you could actually engage them in close combat instead of simply relying on a dodge/counter system. - I should have said posi-negative. The negative: - The game’s performance on PC is a huge downgrade - Character movement is janky, as if the lower and upper parts of the body are disconnected. - The viewpoints are poorly spread and cover too small areas, so the map is not very accessible. I get you have to clear uncovered areas by exploring, but it’s a pain when it only reveals a 2-3 meter radius around the player when you can actually see far beyond. - The notoriety system is not well balanced. Guards are everywhere in cities, while there are few hiding spots and the wanted posters are hard to find. - The economy system is completely useless. You can very easily beat the game with your basic weapons without worrying about upgrading them or the nonexistent armor thanks to the easy combat. - And therefore, hunting crafting and trading are completely useless. The homestead mission rewards are as well. Not to mention the unfriendliness of the crafting and trading interface. - The characters looked better in previous entries. Even Shaun and Rebecca have been downgraded in this one. - Something is wrong with these cutscenes. - The buildup to the modern day storyline raised my expectations, given that Desmond had to live his ancestors memories to get their skills, he deserved his own entry, featuring the modern day only, to conclude his arc. This fell flat. - The story. All four previous entries had engaging stories, and when it came to historical events, one could simply enjoy the landmark descriptions in the animus in the Ezio trilogy. This story didn’t make me engaged, nor did its protagonist, and you made a very good dissertation explaining why. AC Revelations was a slight downgrade in some aspects compared to AC2 and brotherhood, but playing AC3 I was thinking “how could it get this bad?”

Wasn’t it Charles Lee that tried to warn the villagers of Washington’s second attack so that they would be able to defend themselves this time? If that’s the case then I can understand why Connor’s best friend thought he turned on his own people because he was siding with Washington who was actually responsible for the village burning down and the death of Connor’s mother when he was a boy. If men like Haytham and Charles were trying to help then why would Connor still be angry and vengeful towards them? It doesn’t make sense to me.
@demodrakkaen0316
@demodrakkaen0316 3 жыл бұрын
By that point in the game, Connor has gone from being revenge-driven and familially honor bound, to actually being an Assassin who sees it as his job to fight for freedom and against the Templars. Lee and Haytham's involvement in his village's destruction are secondary motivators after awhile. IIRC this first really becomes evident after the Boston Massacre/Boston Tea Party leads Connor to question a few of his beliefs. They went for a subtle approach rather than the speech, so many fans mischaracterized Connor until it was solidly in place, when Haytham helps Connor and he is forced to confront the fact his father wasn't as evil as he thought, even though he was a Templar and therefore his enemy. Connor's character development was constantly going on, it just went for subtlety and natural changes that a more reserved character would have. The issue is, everyone got used to the charismatic, flirtatious, playboy Ezio and couldn't fathom why Connor was none of those things.

Iirc, it wasnt the mohawk situation, it was his actions at monmouth where he gave tactics that "backfired" then fled. With the mohawks, he did go to the village, but it felt like he was using that to make things worse, having the warriors attack the army and then really sell the story that they were "working with the British." He also told them Connor had been corrupted, causing Connor to have to fight his best friend.

Every AC game has their strength in being the best AC game weather its plot, game play, or even simple fantasy. Man ain’t it just funny that in a game with a native protagonist in one of the periods of time that could have made for not only a great dramatic setting but also illuminate a largely unheard of perspective of a largely known time and history with a Native American perspective, he’s only ever largely used to be a POV of the history that in part led to the colonization and genocide of his people. The fact Connor is Mohawk and comes into direct contact with all these historical figures like Ben Franklin and George Washington is funny too since these people would surely treat him less than based off the history of people like Washington who establish an expansionist policy that justified hundreds of years of genocides and displacement of natives that was at the time it was written for the explicitly stated purposes of securing as much land and property from the natives while also establishing the savage like rhetoric following policies would embrace and use to further justify colonization. Ben Franklin is another funny one and the direct mention of the Iroquois Confederacy and talk of American independence was real rich given Franklin gave a back handed compliment about that confederacy’s effective governing structure and remarking how shameful it was the colonists were being put to shame by these savages’s shocking ability to govern not only themselves but multiple tribe alliances the confederacy allowed and promoted trade within. Hell the Iroquois would serve as one of the more pivotal structures of government to influence the articles of confederacy. But man does making the native protag of the series only really amount to a lifeless vessel to experience the history that directly led to the dehumanization of his people is, well tone deaf would be putting it lightly.

This hits then nail on the head really. Regarding Connors character, it was clearly meant to go from a motivation of revenge to one of principle, leading to Connor still pursuing the Templars even if they weren’t actually responsible for his personal tragedy, alike Haytham staying with the Templars even after learning of Birches manipulation. However, they fail to build this up before this moment, leading to players to just get frustrated.

For me, the biggest problem in Assassin's Creed III is that you can NEVER have an enjoyable and fun killing spree after completing the game. As we all know, there isn't much to do after completing the game. However, killing enemy soldiers is fun and badass, which you can do. There is just one problem. Bounty hunters/Jägers will always, no matter what, come and ruin everything for you. Coming after you everywhere you go until you bribe or take down wanted posters, which obviously isn't fun and should not be a part of the game. Basically, the notoriety system stops you from having fun in free roam.

For the most of the stuff, I agree with you, mate. However, there are couple of things, which you seem to not appreciate. *The music* was absolutely brilliant, one of the best from the whole series, despite the theme being significantly different from Ezio's Family. *The Mission Structure* was also well-written, "Chasing Charles Lee" is one of the best missions in all AC series in terms of action (let it be known, that it doesn't include almost any fight at all) and intensity. Haytham' story is very good, as well as the writing on his character. The modern story is amazing (soundtrack again - purely awesome cyberpunk style, not seen in other ac game) and the fact that we had 3 missions with Desmond in modern days and they were very well-written too, is another point. (Just to explain, I don't have a problem with him dying, if Ubisoft were able to create an even stronger story to culminate to, so far, I know, it's not really happening) But mostly, I was impressed with the soundtrack. Trust me, I really appreciated these moments when I was taking down the British flag and putting the US one. (Because of the music, I live in the UK 😁)

The thing I didn't like the most was low skill parkour and you can't go from building to building in the cities. The emotional payoff for Achilles was also hidden behind side content and Connors speech was cut out. Connor is also not an assassin at all. The story is garbage and I didn't even realize that this was the start of Ubisoft forcing historical events and characters into the story. Connor also doesn't care when he kills his friend or when he finds out Washington is responsible for his mom and villages death. The modern day is also extremely anti climactic. People also defend Connor by saying he's traumatized but he doesn't react to literally anything ever. He really is just a vessel to watch the American Revolution. Another thing, why can't we assassinate Charles Lee like a black box mission. Why is it just cutscenes, same with Haytham.

Some of my views, i wonder if they are impacted by the Remastered version. That said, I disagree with some of these points..and apologies that this is long… Parkour: while streamlined, i have found I still have a fair amount of control over how I move. While they removed the spring button, they allowed using the jump button for “unsafe” jumps, as well as the loot/drop button to simple cancel parkour, much like letting go of sprint in the prior games would do. Cancels/ejects are still there, though they have a much smaller timing window if cancelling a climb (one could argue that it then requires more precision of button inputs?). On just including history..how does this compare to the assassination attempt of the medici, or dealing with the borgias? Idk, Connor being involved in history didn’t bother me, neither did dealing with the borgias, or being amid the crusades, or being one of the most infamous pirates. I actually enjoyed watching how the Templars sought to use the war for their own goals, personally. At that point, Connor had been roped in, and told that by helping the army, he’d help his people, which then becomes tragic when he discovers what will happen in the end. The midnight ride was..probably the one I could do without. Combat..i feel like the slowmo is the biggest thing that could he seen as handholding? Idk, i don’t remember the prior games being much harder in combat. It also helped that AC3 threw in guards that couldn’t be chained or countered without a tool, and enemies could actually attack you mid animation or two at a time. To me, it felt like one of those things that wasn’t much of a “downgrade” as it was “we got better and they didn’t change it up as much to make it harder.” But i also found myself trying to stealth more, with blending, the rope dart, poison darts, and assassin recruit skills. And getting out of combat as quickly as possible if possible. Visuals..on the original, yeah, I’d agree. I can’t say i didn’t enjoy looking at the colonial towns though. With the modern day, while i know some feel like the missions weren’t the point or it lacked mystery, idk. I enjoyed it, as a culmination of what Desmond had been experiencing. The whole point of them taking advantage of the Bleeding Effect was for him to be able to perform in the Modern Day as well. Navigating the Brazil stadium with no hud, and abstergo were such fun for me. I disagree with you saying that finding Charles Lee for revenge as his main motivation, and really Connor in general. This is a common view, and i don’t see how it’s his main goal. He leaves, wanting to protect his village. With the Boston Tea Party, it’s point is to show Connor..maybe not really wanting to kill. He doesn’t want to kill William and shows remorse for it, and he had hope that losing the tea would mess up William’s plans, refusing to listen to Achilles. He underestimates the Templars’ resources. His arc isn’t about seeking revenge. If revenge was his goal, he would’ve wanted to kill Washington, but he was at the point where he recognized that was what the Templars wanted and put that aside, though he did cut ties. And his hunt for Charles Lee at that point is tied more to the fact Lee is, honestly, willing to obliterate everything Connor cares about and constantly puts him down, the difference in his personality being a difference in how he acts with a fellow Englishman vs a Native. With Pitcairn, and really all the Templars, I think too many take their words to heart, and maybe that was a goal due to the whole introduction, but we’re talking about a group that wants to exert control over others. Connor is naive, and not the most eloquent, but given the context of Pitcairn literally just saying “better we hold the strings than someone else,” to which Connor said the strings should be cut, which is in line with some Assassin views. Oddly..i found naval in ac3 more fun than 4. Maybe it was due to not being forced or grindy, but the missions felt more fun, and the chain shot works far better and the grapeshot and heatshot are nice additions. Trading system…yeah, that was not very good. I mainly used it to get my upgrades.

With Washington, i pointed on it above, but I feel this would either show Connor's growth, or show that he is *not* hunting for revenge. His anger at Haytham is tied to the fact that Haytham *did* just reveal that he knew the truth and never told Connor until it was convenient. I'm sorry, but I feel like when one focuses on Connor as being revenge filled, they overlook some of his actual character.

Totally agree, this game was so bad it has put me off from EVER buying another Assassin's Creed game again! Going from the Ezio Trilogy with awesome locations and heights that made me nervous (because of my irl fear of heights) to tiny 2 story houses and the viewpoints being just trees that didn't uncover as much of the map as I expected was a major let down. I was annoyed that all the cool weapon upgrades that Leonardo unlocked for us were just gone. I hated the guns. The horse was practically useless. Having a constant notoriety in the frontier was infuriating. Conner always calling his mentor "old man" in a condescending way was just plain rude. The many times I had to Google something to find out if I was doing it wrong but it ended up turning out to be a bug really irritated me. Despite having no notoriety in the towns and having a group of soldiers try to dog pile you for no reason was total bullshit. I am definitely not a fan of the drastically changed HUD/interface. Playing the historical content that I had to sit through from middle through high school was the epitome of boring. Florence, Tuscany, Venice, Constantinople, Ezio's return to Masyaf looked so nice and had good parkour, then we got garbage houses, trees, and a really bad fast travel tunnel system. smh

Firstly, the best upgrade in this game was the Homestead. You're playing obstensibly the main story but as it turns out the main story is really a side mission, the homestead is what the man is about, and you get to know the people who live on his land, and what they do on his land, you partake in the economy of the land. Your ability to craft is based on your having involved yourself in the lives of the craftsmen. Better than the villa in II. Secondly, the world is fantastic, perhaps other than Rogue it's the best world they ever created. The main gameplay was downgraded I agree, and I also agree that he shouldn't have played pivotal roles in every historical event of the era, nor been made a ship captain so quickly. And anyone who says that you take forever to get into the adult Connor part of the game is not wrong. And yet, none of that matters to me ultimately, the game is really about this dour character who's taken on a burdensome responsiblity and a dark life, doesn't that remind you of a particular Assassin? His interractions with Haythem were brilliant cinema moments, the best character relationship in the entire franchise. I ended up loving AC III and there were plenty of times in my two playthroughs where I definitely didn't think that was possible.

You know man... With the Assassin's creed games that are more poorly written you need to want to see the motivation of the characters and you need to want to see the parts of the plot to connect and make sense. If you do that, everything becomes very logical and consistent (mostly). Don't forget that you play simulations of fictional characters that 1.) are shown in an episodic, disjointed manner 2.) represent real people with different motivations and different quirks which make them better or worse as fictional characters BUT don't make them less valid as hypothetical real world human beings.

To say that having modern day missions was never the point isn't really accurate. When we break out of Abstergo in AC 2 Lucy straight up tells us that we aren't just there to find pieces of Eden. We are there because the Assassins lost their skills over the years, and they wanted Desmond to learn it all from Ezio so that they could revive the Assassins properly in the modern day. This always suggested that we would eventually be doing modern day missions as Desmond.

I definetly agree with the sentiment that III was unfinished and undercooked in the way it forecasted all you did in the game being just good enough to what you saw in the trailer. But I have always said since IV, "Blackflag is everything that III wished it could be." From the Naval Combat being more intuitive and exciting,, (the biggest offender), to the freerunnning through carribean ports being so much more invigorating than the jumbled landscape of trees the American forests had to boast. These were things that III missed the mark by miles, but at the time had nothing to compare to so we just swallowed it and played the damned thing.

This game used to be my favorite game of all time, it was my introduction to the series & sparked my love for history at a young age. If a single game defined my entire gamer childhood it was this game; that said I recently spent $20 on the remaster (after playing through AC2 & AC Brotherhood for the first time) and when I booted up the game and played the first 6 hours or so I quickly realized how awful this game is. It’s so unbelievably awkward and unfinished, moments of complete silence dead faced characters, absent audio effects, poor story telling etc etc etc. I mean for example how the hell did Achilles know that Haythem was Connors father? You can say “He probably told him off screen” but that is such a cope for an abysmal game with an abysmal story. What if Edward Kenway went from a clueless pirate, to fully aware and educated on the assassin order, but it all happened off screen when someone told him. Moments like that make a game, you people coping for the game have no sense of good story telling, facial animation, tone, or really anything. Stop sharing your opinions.
