Assassins Creed has been on of the most impactful game series on me throughout my entire life. From the very beginning, the story of Altair, I've consistently cherished this franchise through ups and downs, high's and lows, masterpieces, and disasters.
But nothing quite epitomises my love for the series more than the three most widely revered games in the series, Assassins Creed 2, Assassins Creed Brotherhood, and Assassins Creed Revelations, or, as their better know, the ezio trilogy. The amount of sheer hours of playtime I've put into this now iconic trilogy of games is probably sickening to most, as I've witnessed the story of ezio auditore from his birth to his death, probably about a dozen times as we enter 2020.
After the success of ubisofts prince of Persia spin-off, assassins creed, released in 2007, the company made the decision to move forward with a sequel, entrusting patrice desilets to potentially manifest the original game into a fully fledged franchise. And after assassins creed 2 released on the 17th of November 2009, it was safe to say, desilets succeeded. Not only did assassins creeds successor act as a near perfect sequel to the first, but it came entrenched in the gaming community as one of the best insular games of all time.
What ubisoft were able to do in 2010, to put it very simply, was a miracle. Not only for what it did for the assassins creed franchise, not only for what it did for the stories of both ezio and Desmond, but also, for the time in which ubisoft created what i believe to be their greatest game ever. Seemingly straight after the critically astounding release of assassins creed 2, Patrice Desilets and his team got to work, and in less than a year, were able to create their magnum opus. In less than a year they were able to create a second consecutive masterpiece of gaming, another financial and critical success. They were able to create... assassins creed brotherhood
Revelations ending, in a vacuum, may be my favourite moment from the entire Assassins Creed Franchise, and to say what came after was a disappointment would be a heavy understatement. This trilogy allowed for so much to be done moving forward, with so much potential, but ubisoft, in their need for profits, continuously pumped out underdeveloped games until the lore became almost meaningless.
But for me, these games overarching stories will never be forgotten, and will never, ever be taken for granted.
revelations is at it's best when it embraces the past, embraces the fact that it is the end to this chapter of assassins creed, leaning on gameplay mechanics of old whilst continuing the growth and evolution of the characters

My favorite part of the trilogy is a mission intro in brotherhood, a boy is crying because a slaver took his mom and Ezio stops everything he is doing just to ask: "Bambino, why are you crying?" He isn't mean, he isn't arrogant, he doesn't say "man up". He just approaches the lonely boy and ask in kindness what's his issue.

It pains me so much to see what has happened to the series afterwards, I mean I still do like the newer games, but I don't think anything will ever live up to this 4 part masterpiece. Thank you for this retrospective, you edited the ending PERFECTLY ;)

I'd add blackflag on the list too, it's not that good as a sequel to the desmond saga but if you look at it as a spin-off to tie togheter the loose ends of the ibn'lahad family line, plus it's the second best game when taken out of the series after the AC2. it would also have been a great bridge towards the new generation of the saga if ubisoft didn't butcher it into oblivion. I can forgive the nameless self insert main character bs once but unity should've introduced a new protagonist to keep the ball rolling between releases and then maybe we wouldn't have titles that get hyped exclusively because of their setting and graphical improvement.

@Alek Althouse 29:45 this is not cannon apparently, i know it's cannon because it's in the game, but the statement along with the name of the future prophet is not cannon. i mean if we were to argue how such a thing to be possible Ubisoft would have written it in how it made sense, but it's just a shocking moment in the game and really only means they wanted to leave the player on a cliff hanger with a WTF moment to think about for a while. in the novel that's written for these games completely skips the name desmond, everything else until this point is cannon, but in the game it isn't. desmond the character is still cannon, but his name being used in this scene isn't. in the novel she talks to another prophet that this information is for, i mean maybe the animus with machine learning figured it out and just filled in the gaps and this is how it played out.

If you think about it, when Uberto told Giovanni that he didn't know anything about any documents, two things might've come to his head. 1. Uberto is lying, the obvious choice and what I think Giovanni believes or heartbreakingly, 2. that Ezio failed him and didn't deliver the documents on time, if at all. But I think Giovanni wouldn't believe that Ezio would fail, so in the end, he died betrayed but probably proud that his son did his best to save them.

My favourite thing about brotherhood has to be the secrets you unlock. Some basically are nods of history but a spin off of where the templars are siezing control of the world. One where a possibility came of them shooting kennedy (or JFK, can't remember), one where they were almost caught with spyware when a person saw their television. all of them were left by subject 17 I believe. I think one even had the soviet union being involved with the templars.

I really loved the breakdown. I didn't see a retrospective for Revelations yet, but I'll take the comments shared here. If I may add to them (and potentially discuss them), this was the first AC game that really had me looking at the game going "do you even history?" while still reveling in the game's gameplay and environment. I timidly disagree about the color of Constantinople. There I feel like Ubisoft was able to truly capture the vibrant and colorful setting for the ascendant Ottoman Empire's new capital and I got lost less in Constantinople than I did in Rome. Also, Brotherhood while the map has a significant portion that is very open (compared to the city streets), it felt more like either ideas for what that part of the city would consist of in the late 15th century, or was left that way intentionally to break up the consistency of a highly developed metropolis. That said, I pretty much agree about the plot and gameplay, so I don't want to hit on those (aside from a few small caveats). So on the history side. Founded Scarab kind of hit on the parallel points of the Assassins vs Templars, but my issues here go further, all the way into some of the foundations of the game. AC Revelations has the Templars being an underground, cult-like, group of Byzantines. This is pretty bad for two key things. First is the fact that the Byzantines...excuse me, ROMANS (Byzantine was a term that was coined by a German historical revisionist with an agenda about a century after the empire was wiped out)...seeing as how the game takes place about 60 years after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, even the basic notion that there would be some underground movement to restore the Roman Empire is cringeworthy at best. To put this in perspective, that would be like some young men saying they wanted to dress up in their grandfathers' uniforms, gather arms and armor, and plan to restore an nation that neither they, nor their fathers, ever knew. Even at the most extremely generous stretches of the imagination, there's 0 chance that the Ottomans would suffer such a group in their capital, let alone have an entire city of theirs in Cappodocia. Second problem with this is the fact that the Romans throughout the medieval period were Eastern Orthodox. Under the structures and beliefs of that religion, there was no exception to the commandment "thou shall not kill," even killing an infidel was considered a sin (even if the circumstances, such as armed combat during a war, made the sin a sad part of an understandable situation). Unlike with Roman Catholicism, this made the basic concept of a templar (ie someone who fights in the name of their religion) quite incompatible with Orthodox teachings. Third issue gets a bit into the minor details and some missed opportunities that resulted. While the Byzantines have the typical types of guards (a basic soldier, an agile, and a heavy in the form of the Almughavar), they also included Varangian Guardsmen. For reference, the Varangian Guard consisted of Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon/English who were hired as mercenary bodyguards of the emperor and incorporated into the Roman Army and trained by a Roman officer (the Akulothos). If you go to the AC wikipedia, there is even some trivia acknowledging that the Almughavars (who were light infantry javelineers from Iberia) were more like the Varangians in weapons and appearance and vice versa. When one takes a look at the Roman military from the 11th century onwards, there's a large variation of soldiers from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. Steppe/Turkish horse archers alongside Russians, Bulgarians, Serbs, Franks, Normans, Germans, English/Anglo-Saxons, and native Greeks...even in the final battle of the empire, the Romans hired several thousand condottieri (mercenaries) from Genoa and Venice. Aside from one character who was pretty forgetful in the grand scheme of the game, I think covering this diversity was a missed opportunity if they absolutely wanted to have the Romans as the antagonist forces they tried to be. At the bare minimum, it would have paid to make the Varangians an opponent on par with (if not greater than) the Ottoman Janissaries, and give some tribute to their role as bodyguards, by having Manuel Palaiologos utilize a retinue of Varangians as his bodyguards. Final footnote, I read somewhere that Leandros (the mercenary captain at the start of the game) was supposed to be something of a stepping stone, presenting the same kind of threatening adversary as Cesare, but I feel this failed completely. If we truly had to face off with Byzantines, then a mercenary force that was continuing the traditional organization and doctrine of medieval Roman warfare could have been something to behold, but again, this wasn't really pursued. Thanks again Founded Scarab for a great video. If Revelations ever gets its own stand alone retrospective, I hope these elements make their way into it.

58:45 i don't think the apple is using time travel here, we already understand they both have had their hands on the apple, and we understand that the apple is a powerful object that allows all kinds of amazing unexplainable things to be shown to the user, i believe the device isn't just a weapon, but it's also a computer of a kind that learns from it's users and apart of it's software is it's user interface uses emotion and intent on emotion, meaning it could essentially read the mind of the user and even know their plans and their future plans and even knowing all of what they control. the apple is used as a collection of data that can be used to further predict circumstances within it's users, in the lore of the game they explain the user who has the bloodline of the Isu can use these objects with full control, other users can also use the apple, but they can only get a limited fraction of access to it's true power and control, which is probably why both Rodrigo and Cesera didn't know the plans of the assassins or their odds for that matter. we already know that the apple has a GPS location of every temple within the world and that Altiar used it to learn how to make the hidden blade upgrades and the armor he created along with the stored memories of his that waere passed down to Ezio, the illusions that we saw al mulim use on Altiar and keep him held in place and the electric exploding thing that Ezio preformed while he used it, then in revelations when we witnessed old Altiar use it to create illusions of assassins doing air assassinations. so the apple has more than enough unexplained things that it can do, so reading the DNA of each user and what they envision isn't that far off from how algorithms and prediction software already works in some of our most advanced computer networks do in real life. so not time travel so much as prediction algorithms running simulations on the intent of the user's emotions which it predicts and passes the information to the user of the bloodline within, now i would assume a projection of how that possible future would play out is communicated to the user via information download, especially within the amount of time it took to give him the information. i also believe that the temples have the ability to absorb information from the ppl who enter it and touch and use the tech within the temples, which is why the apple at the end of ACB kills Lucy using Desmond's body, it's amazing how it controls the user even when the user is trying to prevent it from taking on this task to kill her.

Google automatically places ads, I've never manually placed an ad on this video. If I was trying to 'play the system' though, I wouldn't be making hour and a half long retrospectives on 10 year old games. I'd be making shit daily content about current games

I hope ubisoft someday realise that all their sales and success for the franchise sequences like valhalla being most sold is because of these masterpieces wherein their priority was to create a legendary game and not mtxn stores.. Wish they realise people buy their games nowadays not because the games in itself are good but rather the name attached with it.. Assassin's creed..for whatever it is was developed by these games n not the shit they are making nowadays.

I can’t begin to explain my love for these games and I agree 100 percent that this is the best in the series. I honestly couldn’t pick the best or rank them. I’d say this though: Best story: revelations Best side content: brotherhood Best soundtrack: revelations Best gameplay: revelations Best modern day: brotherhood Game with most special feel: 2 Best missions: revelations Best characters: 2 Best setting: 2 Best ezio outfit: 2 Most intriguing game: 2 I can’t pick tbh I love em all but for me it’s ac 2s bad combat that pushes the other two over the line but it still has an excellent story and setting. I’d say revelations is the best idk why but the new features brings so much and Ik everyone hates den defence but seriously you have to do it once get over it.

Bro ac2's combat is really good. You have to understand how to pick enemy off-guard. But my favourite will be brotherhood.

@@ethanmahon6948 origins open world is actually good and story also, but rpg screwed it for me,and Parkour is downgraded like hell, even stealth also felt like useless and unrewarding. No social stealth. What came after this is actually worst in the series. Rpg actually started from syndicate itself.

29:45 this is not cannon apparently, i know it's cannon because it's in the game, but the statement along with the name of the future prophet is not cannon. i mean if we were to argue how such a thing to be possible Ubisoft would have written it in how it made sense, but it's just a fuck you shocking moment in the game and really only means they wanted to leave the player on a cliff hanger with a WTF moment to think about for a while. in the novel that's written for these games completely skips the name desmond, everything else until this point is cannon, but in the game it isn't. desmond the character is still cannon, but his name being used in this scene isn't. in the novel she talks to another prophet that this information is for, i mean maybe the animus with machine learning figured it out and just filled in the gaps and this is how it played out.

I feel like I might be one of the only people who absolutely hated all the side content in Brotherhood. It honestly felt incredibly bloated and completely unnecessary. I didn't give a single shit about the thieves, courtesans, etc. Give me story and things relevant to the story only. This is a big reason I love Revelations so much, it cuts out all of the unnecessary bullshit from Brotherhood, trims the fat nicely.

Horrific armor....so much disagreed :p I like how the Brutus armor looks so apart, and it looks great while driving a stolen armored Borgia horse because of the red colors. Sure, you do not look like an subtle assasin driving trough Rome like that, but you do look like some legendary warrior that humiliated both the feared underground cult and the ruling establishment of the city. And once you actually went trough the whole base game and are freeroaming to Rome, you are just what you look like.
