The pavement level doesn't look right, unless you know about the 'event' and you are right about the "Victorian addition" but how does it fit in with the building that was there before: the lodging house?
@MrMonkeydrummer5 жыл бұрын
In an old painting on our landing that site is denoted as being the ruins of St Michaels chruch, which got my interest as I had been researching the St Micheal lines and prominence of St Mike churches. I don't think it was a church as such but the lodging houses were built on the 3 storey existing ruins and then demolished when there was more money around to build something that hid the truth better.

@@MrMonkeydrummer fantastic MrMonkeydrummer; there is much more to be known about this site. The original church was St Nicholas'. that must be a really old painting you have on your wall!

@@MrMonkeydrummer Am pretty sure that the church ruins were the old 16th century Saint Nicholas church . Could be wrong .
@MrMonkeydrummer5 жыл бұрын
@@eowynxwenham3548 You are correct, I checked the sketching again but the ruins of St Nicholas church on this 1715 depiction just have a small pile of stones where these "ruins" are supposed to be which suggest that they were buried under something. I think the different stages of buildings there are variously better attempts to make use of those ruins as foundations and lower stories. It appears from working in many buildings in that area that they seem to go down to the bedrock or sea level and have since been inundated. God knows and he is keeping quiet.

@@MrMonkeydrummer I wish i could find out more about this . I noticed up on South cliff Esplanade, There is a building that looks very Tartar . Difficult to see properly from where i work . But the towers on the corners are a slight give away . Will have a drive up and a look when i have spare time . I reckon the whole area from the Mount to the castle is steeped in 'mudfloodology' . Ooh , Mudfloodology ! Did i just make up a name there ? :) If i find anything else out . I will be sure to share .

Tech. departments in towns have to know about how it all was developed. Back in times they kept informations like it is done nowadays. They have archives. The ? is why most of us does´nt have a clue about whats (really) going on... Who controls that?
@daveeboney70894 жыл бұрын
Ivan Nio I think it is the people that run the town control all information on these buildings......there will be drawings covering every square inch of the Hotel but the public will Never be allowed to see such documents

Hi Dave, time to bore you with some more history lol, . Before this hotel was built, Woods Lodgings stood there, however, before that there was an hospital here. This area was the towns boundary, Valley Road was a valley called Ramshill Squat, dead animals and other rubbish would be thrown over there ( a bit like today ! ) so all along there and to what would become Cliff Bridge Terrace was very poor.This area was called The Cliff ( by the way, The Grand was originally called The Cliff Hotel until a new company took over the building, also, please don't believe it's built in the shape of a V for Queen Victoria, it's V shaped to hold up the cliff ) this was the site of a leper hospital called St Nicholas after the bishop of Lycia. The hospital was there until the 14th century maybe later. The hotel you are in now was in fact posh houses, all different in appearance. this has basement levels including a swimming pool, which is still there but never used.

its so strange i was just re reading about the history you have just talked about this afternoon..i have saved the clips when i was researching the grand last year. It was because i did not believe the official story of built in the shape of a V that started me off with this building.....While i was in the hotel this time i was able to see the floor plans "not blue prints" and i chap who works at the hotel was talking me through what was downstairs and what each room was used for in he past and strangely enough the swimming pool is on the ground flood just next door to the restaurant not on the lower ground level.

Do you know of any plans to re do this place up as i can not see it going on as a hotel much longer the state it is in also the subsidence surly its days are numbered just like the futurist theatre??
@kelvinallen26245 жыл бұрын
@@daveeboney7089 as I said earlier that hotel will be there for a long time yet, although in 1978 it very nearly became private flats until my ex boss Billy Butlin bought it. The subsidence will be seen to so we are told with the 7 million pound lottery grant. Watch this space.

@@kelvinallen2624 nice one..i had no idea about the grant just needs a make over now.
@kelvinallen26245 жыл бұрын
@@daveeboney7089 the grant is for the whole gardens along South Cliff, somehow I don't think 7 million will go far when the work behind the Spa is costing over 20 million.

Points (that gather energy) could have been replaced with balls (that discharge static electricity, don't let it build up) at some point. De-activation of the buildings, now that different energy sources are used.
