North Bay would still be popular if they'd kept Kinderland, Watersplash / Atlantis, Mr Marvels and the chair lifts and the Corner entertainment complex.

I agree. But I think they closed due to lack of punters. The chairlift would probably have been popular today.

I agree it's shameful that Kinderland and Watersplash closed. From how I see it the council agreed to the apartment developments on the Corner Cafe site with conditions that a new domed water park would be built. We still have the eyesore where Watersplash was!

they have only closed it because it ment extra money to turn our beutiiful town into "luxury apartments" that will be too expensive to live in anyway in a few years this town is slowly dying

Childhood Memories, I am almost 69 and still in my mind can recall Holidaying in Scarborough before I was 5. I would have pestered my parents to take me on the Cliff Tramways and I think I would have ridden on 4 of them at that time. As well as the Railway in the North Bay. Thank You for The Memories.

[5:10] Edited out the half hour it took you to find somewhere to park. I haven't been to Scarborough since 2005. It does not look any different. When I was a kid we would go there on day trips a few times a year, and we even stayed there for a week on a couple of occasions. I can confirm that the north bay had something of a revival because we stayed there for a week around 1980. We kids hated it because my parents did not want to spend much time on the north side, and my dad refused to use the car, so we would have to walk to the south side and back almost every day. What was particularly annoying was that the north side had a massive water park type thing, something that we had never seen before, and we just wanted to go there rather than walk 2 miles to sit on a crowded beach. We went there one day and it was great, although my dad disagreed. One year we did stay on the south side and there was a cliff lift that we used a few times to get to the hotel, but I cannot remember which one it was - probably the one by the spa. My dad refused to go on it, so we only used it when he wasn't with us. When we did not use the lift I believe there was what seemed like an unnecessarily long path that snaked down the cliff in some gardens. There may have been more direct stairs, but my mother dislikes stairs. Now that I think about it, between my dad and my mum with their long list of often conflicting preferences, it's amazing that I remember going to Scarborough as being fun.

Im 81 and live abroad quite a lot now, but my Mother took me to Scarborough every summer and Blackpool for the lights. We lived in Norfolk. I spent as much time as I could on the lifts and made every excuse possible to use them. I loved the two swimming pools, one, the sea water was my favourite. Peasholme park at least once a week to watch the fighting of the battle ships. I was such a regular was allowed to sail on one once. From age 4 to 13, then planes and abroad came into my left, although I then took my children to both venues when they grew up. Many years later I assisted in doing a total inventory of the Grand Hotel, with three other people. It took us over two weeks, there was no heat anywhere in the building and I thought I was going to freeze to death. I loved the place, especially when my Mother referred to the 6p bay and the 2 shilling bay!!!!

Just come back from a few days in Scarborough. Went on the Victorian Venicular which was great. South Bay is very “Blackpool” like and North Bay a lot quieter but both have great beaches and you can get a open top bus between one and the other I also went to see the remains of the old Ski Lift by the open air theatre (which was in one of your previous videos) as well as Peasholme Park, the miniature railway and the water slide. All my trip was made so much better because of your videos, so many thanks and I would definitely recommend Scarborough for a Staycation

I remember riding the North Bay lift opposite the corner café as a kid, didn't realise they had removed it all,but I haven't been to Scarborough for a walk around for many years. We used to holiday there most years and have ridden the Spa cliff lift many, many times as we used to go to the Spa buffet bar most nights after parking my dad's car in the streets opposite the upper entrance to the lift, walking through the gardens or accross the footbridge that brings you to the Grand Hotel. Happy days they were for me and my parents and grandparents that used to come with us. Thanks for the video of,what was for me my favourite holiday destination.

Darren on his jollies again!!! Thanks Darren for the history lesson on old Scarborough cliff lifts. As kids it was usually Bridlington, occasionally Filey or Whitby for holidays. Day trips to Scarborough but usually to South Bay. I never knew about the pier and only the Clift lift by the spa. On day trips it was too long a walk to Peasholm park and the model ships battles on the lake. As a Batley born kid it was equidistant to the Yorks or Lancs coasts but before my folks could buy a car (post war austerity there were not many s/h, or new cara available!) it was usually the Yorks coast via coaches (the coaches of the 50/60 were something to behold 😀) After we got a car then Lytham St Anne's was my folks preferred Lancs destination. Oh happy times. Cheers Darren, BTW Mrs Warboy sends her regards even though hit shoes are playing up on her bunions, DougT aka Victor Meldrew the Mancs pensioner 😎

@@AdventureMe Spot on Darren, the harbour and fish quays were like a magnet to a curios kid. Don't forget in the 50/60's the modern walk way short cut across the top of the harbour wasn't even built so it was the full walk around on the roadside. If we had been good then a treat was the rowboat ferry across the harbour mouth. Treat of the week was the steamer cruise round the bay. Think both the Yorkshire Man and Bridlington Belle were in operation. Of course dad and other guys were in the bar saloon as once over 3? Miles out there were no licencing laws 🍺 and we got a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps (only plain with a blue twist of salt in those days 😎) Oh happy days. Cheers DougT

Apologies if already mentioned but there was a near identical Warwick tower on Douglas Head in the Isle of Man around the same time, I think it succumbed to fire. Stayed in Scarborough in 2018, was great to see a British seaside town seemingly doing well, really liked the area and once the current situation eases will return. A very interesting and informative video of the five Victorian/Edwardian Funicular Railways of Scarborough. I was born in Scarborough in 1952, raised in town, on the North Side; I have been in business all my life, and am now retired in the lovely village of Burniston. My childhood was spent in the North Bay, down the Glen, to the magical boating ponds; you had to be there early with your "Star" solid wooden yacht under your arm. Then it was on to Peasholm Park and the North Bay; along to Scalby Mills where, before the present seawall was built in 1960, Scalby Beck ran across the sands with, "Monkey Island" in the middle. As kids we could run up and down is steep faces! Then, back to the sands; someone would find an old fishbox washed up; providing an ideal wicket and cricket bat, we always had an old bald tennis ball with us; plenty of the blokes on the sands would eagerly join in. WE never had a penny between us...happy days!!

Nice one, Darren, and interesting subject, too. I remember being impressed by the number of cliff lifts that were operational in Scarborough during my first visits there, in 1977 and 79; and saddened at their demise when I was next there in 2001. True to character my friend Pat responded to a comment in a somewhat crowded Spa Lift about vibration, by producing her personal vibration from her handbag, amidst much laughter. And that was in the morning - she gets worse after a few drinks!! I also remember other, underground places in Scarborough that had all gone by 2003, that were an integral part of my sex education back in the days of widespread homophobia; as well as reading about the onetime existence of the pier.

I've lived on the North Bay area all my life and had no idea about that second cliff lift. Been on the other North Bay one many times as a kid and knew about the pier and tower. Just a bit further up from there, there were two cable cars going up to the zoo and amusement park. There's so much that has been lost in the North Bay area in recent decades.

Another superb vlog. As a child I was taken to Scarborough for holiday over 60 years ago and have vague memories of the exciting cliff lift journeys but have no idea which cliff lift(s) we used. Also vague memories of Peasholme (?) Park. Have recent experience of a cliff lift in Hastings. In this age of trying to be carbon neutral water/gravity power should have more appeal.

I never knew that there had been five of those Funicular Railways at Scarborough, Darren. Another surprise was for you to reveal that there had been a pier too. The old photos that you show are very interesting indeed. Many thanks for this showing.

Interesting vlog. It's a pity the council dismantled the North Bay Tram. I can't believe it didn't make money. You said that you had made more vlogs while you were in Scarborough. I hope one is about how Scalby Mills used to look like. It would be interesting, I don't think I have seen anyone make a vlog about Scalby yet. I know there used to be a fun fair there, a pub and a cafe. The pub that is there now, The Old Scalby Mills, used to be a gift shop.

Used top be a island called monkey island in the late 50's, the north bay around Scalby mills was developed in 62 I think. Used to be a kids paddling pool as well as slide, amusements, shops, toilets, pub and a cafe. I lives in town since 60s and came from here also have a lot of old photos I collect and restore

@@Chris-pv2ht. I think monkey island is a bit before my time. Can you remember the name of the pub please? I have been in it but I can't remember the brewery either. Scalby was a great place for the kids, with the miniature railway and chair lifts.

@@stephenmartin1253 Yes but it was a Pub way before that, with beer barrel tables across the road with a shelter, centuries before which it was the lowest of 4 water powered mills on the Beck. It was the Scalby Mills Hotel pub.

Great video, been going to Scarborough for years and never knew about the pier . Not surprised it didn't last long the tides are monsters in the North bay.

Have you done a video about the castle ruins on the cliff top, I visited north bay recently and it caught my eye I’ve read a bit about it’s history, and also the park with the oriental gardens peasham park i might be wrong sorry if that’s wrong there’s a boat ride around a lake but I used the toilet before I went on and at the left of the toilets are giant steps can anyone remember what used to be at the top like a big Manor House or something , I only stayed on the north bay for about 4 hours it was cold and Windy and my little girls was getting windswept, there was too much to see in the short Space of time but I loved the history of place, great video by the way

As a lad in the 50s/early 60s I'd often be in Scarborough. My Aunt & Uncle, and maternal grandparents, would take me and my brother for trips at the weekends. A&U had a car, so it would be trips in the Dales, and the grandparents took us to the seaside by train. We only ever went to the South Bay as grandad had a lung shot out in WW1 so couldn't walk far. But I once got to the North Bay. I went on a school trip that included Peasholm park, where friends pulled out Sobranie Black Russians and Gitanes Disque Blurghhhhhh! I wonder what my parents did while we were at the seaside. I forgot to say: there is a another brother - 13 years younger than I am. I wonder . . . It'd be interesting to see a video about Skipsea Sands - a merge of then/now, with major cliff erosion having taken place, would be evocative.
