When I started looking at the special designs for the twenty cent coin, I was really surprised to see that it took 29 years.
That's right - despite the 20 cent coins starting with decimal currency in 1966, the first special design on the tails side of the circulated 20 cent coin didn't happen until 1995!
The Queen's portrait changed on the heads side twice in this time.
Even the one dollar had its first special design in 1986, after only being released in 84!
But once they got started, there was an explosion of 20 cent coins with special designs. So I'll break them up into several videos to do them justice.
This first video will cover the first round of special designs on the twenty cent from 1966 until 2000, which covers a grand total of one coin...
The first special design was for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. While it had a relatively low mintage of 4.8 million, it's still out there in circulation and you could find a copy in your change.
Now the next year with any special twenty cent coins released was 2001, but there were 10 different twenty cent coins released that year, so it kind of deserves it's own video.
And that will be the next video.
So until then... Happy hunting
