So fun to see Dan Snow and Chris Barker geek out over coins. We need more of this. We went to the royal mint on a recent trip to wales. The tour and exhibit are impressive will the ancient coins they have displayed. Also enjoyed the kings new definitive coins (circa 2023).

The professionalism of Snow is always welcomed with the spark of curiosity he produces and the way you’ve gotten information out is captivating. You’ve taken a mediocre topic and made it very entertaining. Seriously, your last few posts have been 10s. Well done History Hit

The most expensive coin in the world was a 1933 $20 USA double eagle achieving an auction record of $18.9 million. I don't think the Edward VIII proof sovereign would get anywhere near that but I do suspect it would now sell in excess of £1 million if auctioned. Totally unique and historically valuable. I squirmed when I saw how Dan was handling it, elevated with no gloves and about to drop it any second, thus damaging it's proof finish.

Looks like the "caretakers" of the Royal Mint have already damaged it over the years. Of course, the 1849 $20...if sold...would bring more, but it's impounded at the Smithsonian, so no dice.

I'm a wee bit of a royal jewels nerd, so I know that the two "crowns" Elizabeth II wore on British coins are the George IV State Diadem (made for George IV to be worn by monarchs, but subsequently only worn by Queens) identifiable by the Maltese crosses, and the Girls of Great Britain and Irland Tiara (made for a committee of aristocratic women who called themselves the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland as a wedding present for Mary of Teck, who was marrying the future George V, and given to then-Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present).

Yup, unless the coin came out of the ground or the sea, polishing coins usually downgrades the condition of the coin by 0% (coin is already in awful condition) to 99% (proof or mint state coin) by covering the coin with thousands of tiny scratches.

A million pounds is about currently as of 08/24, around 1.5 million dollars. It just goes to show how little value British history has on the open market. 1.5 million $US is no where near the most expensive coin...I'm not sure if it's even top 25. You can see the list on Wikipedia "List of most expensive coins" and these are all last auction prices. The vast majority, like 4/5 are US or US history-related (like the Brasher Doubloon), with the top seven being all US including all of the double digit millions $US coins. And then approximately a chunk of that non-US 1/5th is Chinese history-related. And on a side note, there are multiple coins on that list that are American but are so highly coveted that they don't come up for sale and thus the last sold copy is more than more than ten years ago. The most notable example is the 1913 Liberty Head nickel (5 known specimens) that last sold in 2007 for a measly 5 million dollars. Considering how many TV shows have been done about it, if one came up for sale, I could see it maybe going to #1 possibly from the #13 spot it's in now. But with only 5, likely someone will have to pass or come close to it, for one to come up on the market.

Bless, unless Gold. Not a Lot Sadly..! Maundy Set is always worth something, Mind. But Remember always Buy/Collect the Best Condition you Can. It's not just about how Old it is, but Condition & Amount Struck. Unless, it has A Flaw from the Mint. I Don't know where abouts you live but check out MULE'S, CUD's, or Oddities. As an Example, here in Australia there was a 'Mule' Struck of the 2000 $1 coin. There was a Wee Mix up when it was struck with a 10cent Die (Smaller) for the Obverse (Head) and the Normal $1 Mob of Roo's on the Reverse (Tail) of the Coin. Bingo a Mix or Bitsa ( Mule ) of 2 coins on the $1 Planchete. A Nice Example can be worth a Thousand AUD'$ or More..! Happy Hunting but Remember it's Numismatic's not Numismentle, which sadly, I may be..! 😂 Cheers Cobber from Some where Downunder, have a Bonza day, Serious or Not..!? 🦘🐪🦎
