After you change the filter on any Mazda or Subaru you can keep the accelerator pedal all the way down before you engage the starter and it will cut the fuel so that you can build up oil pressure. The red pressure light will go away and then you can start like normal without a dry filter temporarily starving the engine of oil .

I'm a long time mechanic and I'll tell you both your Miata/WRX are very easy work on for new car standards. You're a smart dude too so should learn the basics in no time if you did try it out. Can start with fluids, brakes, and suspension to get comfortable
@QueTheChaoticАй бұрын
I appreciate that! All these things can be made simple. Plumbing used to intimidate me but once I got my hands dirty, it was simple. I replaced a garbage disposal and redid my plumbing under the sink. We pay for what we don't know

I'm still floored by how many people don't do their own preventative car maintenance, or even know what needs to be done. They end up getting overcharged or scammed into doing things that don't need done. Learning saves you thousands, and there's a ton of info online on how to do everything. Engine oil, trans oil, diff oil, brake pads and fluid, rotating tires, air filters, spark plugs, serp belt aren't that hard at all and can all be done with a funnel, jack, jack stands, socket set, and a torque wrench. Gives you a good sense of satisfaction knowing you did it yourself and that it's done right too. Helps build a relationship with the car in a weird way too. Even if you don't have the time to do it yourself, at least learn what needs to be done and when so you don't lose a ton of money. But the people that need to hear this won't be watching this, but I digress. Thanks for the great content as always Que ~

Your right on the fact DYI maintenance is not being done by the vast majority of car owners. Que doing this video might raise the curiosity level in MX-5 owners to do more DYI. If they are young it would be a decades long investment in tools to save $$$$ & learn.

Aww man I sense a WRX in the snow video dropping soon! It looks super easy to do, most oil changes are easy to do if you have a lift, without a lift though it can be really time consuming that's the main reason I just take our cars into the dealership, that mechanic was hella cool though loved how careful he was and how explained everything in detail.

Hey Que. I’m a new Miata owner myself, and your videos helped make my decision. I’ve just been looking at some maintenance video’s and found ValvoMax. If you start doing your own oil change, I think you’ll appreciate utilizing one of these. Check out the videos on it, and maybe ask around all your mechanics connections on this special oil plug. Be interesting to see you do a podcast on it. And btw, this manufacturer has a few other pieces to make even more oil drip/mess by offering a container to drain the oil into with a tube and connection end to end. Sweet mess free oil changing.
@QueTheChaoticАй бұрын
Glad I could help. Congrats! Thanks for sharing Valvomax. It looks super simple with no mess. I might have to see about that

It’s nice to find someone that cares about your car as much as you do. I had a horrible experience with one dealership. I ended up taking her back to the dealership store where I bought her. They let me right in the shop, under the car and worked with them to clean up the big mess from the other guy. I definitely can do the oil changes. It was a warranty issue for me. I wanted the documentation. They did good by you. That’s good! 🤙🤙😎🐍🐍🐍

I heard one Should start the car up to run prior to checking oil level with dip stick. Also heard it’s a good idea to lube the new oil filter gasket with some fresh oil.
@QueTheChaoticАй бұрын
Thanks for the info
@terryp007100Ай бұрын
He's exactly right about lubing the gasket of the filter. Another tip I've learned is to put oil INTO the filter first bc at startup, the engine parts are turning nearly dry until the oil makes its way thru the filter and into the engine, and that's unnecessary wear. Start it, let it run for a minute, check the floor for leaks, button it all back up. Then check the dipstick again. You will likely need to add a little. (I've done my own oil changes since my first car at 18) 😊
@ManuNarangАй бұрын
Did they change the drain plug washer? Those are single use and should be changed every time you drain the oil. Also, check your dipstick level again, with the engine warm. They missed these things at the shop.
@QueTheChaoticАй бұрын
I doubt that was changed
@ManuNarangАй бұрын
@QueTheChaotic I would watch out for leaks - those crush washers are single use only. Also, big fan, and a fellow ND3 owner, in the RF flavor. Once the weather is nicer, would be awesome to have a cars and coffee with you and your ND3 - I'm not too far from Michigan.

I learned how to change engine oil first on my NSX, after being afraid to do it for years. Turns out that it takes about 15 minutes in my garage with a single jack stand. I was shocked how much money I was wasting, paying people to do simple stuff. I taught my 18-year-old to do oil changes on his car so he can take care of it himself. Also, here in Ohio, you can take your used oil to most chain oil change places and they’ll dispose of it for you at no charge.
@QueTheChaoticАй бұрын
That's awesome! My dad taught me how to changes brakes but that was on my sister's car so I didn't care lol. I would have to take the used oil to thew recycling center here. Autozone never really takes oil around here. Is it a problem if the car isn't on 4 jack stands?
@DigiphexАй бұрын
What to do with the old oil would be a problem for you. These guys have a recycle truck come by and get the old oil. Put on some Continental Extreme Contact All Season. I love those tires and they still have some performance to them with the traction too.
@slipperynoodle20Ай бұрын
I found local gas stations with working service bays will take the old oil off your hands at no charge. I'm in Wisconsin, and I know for sure that one station used waste oil as heating fuel. Waste oil receptacles are inexpensive.

Great video. I Just did the oil changes on my / my gf’s vehicles. The next step for you could be: -Get an oil extractor, like a MityVac (what I use), makes oil changes stupid easy and clean. -Watch Hollywood Mechanic’s video “You’re using the wrong oil, w/ receipts”. That video right there is the absolute *TRUTH* on oil SAEs and quality results… I simply don’t believe in using 0W-anything in cars that you care anything about. The REAL question is WHY modern manufacturers have been moving to ridiculous oils like 0W oils. -Learn as much as you can about real quality oil brands such as Schaeffer’s, Driven, Redline, & MOTUL. These are all Group 4/5 blends, or exclusively Group 4, Group 5’s… with the exception of Schaeffer’s, which is a quality Group 3/4 blend. Amsoil is in there too. -I can’t recommend enough about testing your oil intervals using Speed Diagnostics. They offer a great service and test for oxidation, besides all the usual things.
