"Just keep the lights on" I can remember, back when I was 9yrs old and afraid of the dark. My uncle said "if Jason was actually coming to kill you, do you think the light being on will stop him?" and followed it up with "at least with the light out you won't know he's there and it'll be quick." My mum didn't ask him to babysit ever again, lol.

Portrait of God is so delightfully scary. i saw it a while back, and it's still one of my favourite short horror films i've seen. i love the fact that the image is still there after the screen is lifted, and formatting it as a school presentation is a fantastic way to give the exposition without being unrealistic about it. i absolutely adore the ending, the fact that she had this "religious experience" that seemingly lasted for a few minutes, but in reality she's been standing there, staring at a blank screen, completely frozen and unblinking is incredible. not to mention her undying faith in the thing she's supposedly running from. it's one of the few short horror films that is equally as horrific every time you watch it.

@@freshplayz0072 yeah i know. i think the fact that the image isn’t warped or anything when it comes down is eerie, since that would happen even if there was a wall directly behind it. plus the creature moves after it comes down. but yeah, i did consider that, i think regardless it’s still a terrifying image.

Fun thing to think about: when you have the infinite mirrors setup, you are technically looking into the past. Each reflection takes just the tiniest bit of time to reach the other mirror and then your eyes, so if they are big enough to see enough iterations, you can actually see the delay

The first video reminds me of my friend with schizophrenia. It was so hard for her tell what was and wasn't real. Eventually a stray cat adopted her. The old boy was terrified of everyone except her so she knew if the cat was chilling, the things she was seeing probably weren't real. (I have narcolepsy and most of the hallucinations I get are sounds or shadows in just in my peripheral vision. No where near as scary as schizophrenia because it's more obvious my brain is just dreaming while awake - but enough to creep me out sometimes)

My ex had that. Spent 14 years together. It got to the point where nothing worked especially if he went off his meds. He became progressively more and more violent. Jan 23' he tried to strangle me. He was arrested. I took that chance to gtfo. I left, got a 5-year CPO, and haven't seen him since. It's been tough navigating through trauma. Some nights the nightmares keep me awake all night. I will say that that type of behavior is NOT normal for a schizophrenic. I think because he was also overusing Adderal he became aggressive because in 14yrs he's never done anything.

My dad told me a story once of being on my great grandfathers property which is slightly out of town off of a highway and telling me that he wasn't sure if it was because he had malaria or anti malaria medication but that he had hallucinations at times but wasn't really aware of how bad things were until one day he calmly walked into his room leaned down and said that the front door to the house was left open and he closed it but to look into the room and tell him if he saw anything. My dad said no shaking his head all confused and his grandfather suddenly looked super relieved and we still aren't sure if he just let it slip or if he felt my dad was old enough now to know whats going on but as he walked away he very lightly said "I saw a bear sleeping"

If it makes you feel any better we have plenty of mirrors and I've never encountered any paranormal events regarding them. In any case, as @@jennymattback3780 said you should probably remove the mirror or cover it up with a curtain if you use it. You could also replace it with a painting or one of those mirrors that can be flipped so the mirror is against the wall.

I remember watching that Lure one a while back and not knowing why it was so friggin unsettling to me. Someone in the comments said that, among other things, it sets up a rule by making it seem like the kid needs to open the window for the thing to get in, so you feel safe as long as the windows closed. Then, it breaks the rule. And the window. I thought that was pretty neat.

That first one gave me flashbacks to my childhood. I saw very realistic hallucinations of people and bugs in the dark. The people would just stand or sit there like statues, and if I stared hard at them sometimes they'd sway back and forth. It always scared tf out of me, but I actually got used to it. In fact, one christmas night I was like 5 yrs old and I remember vividly waking up in the middle of the night, and wandering around my aunt's house in the darkness. I 'saw' my aunt and cousins and others all standing and sitting around in the living room, except they weren't real. They were like frozen in time statues or something, and I remember my tiny brain not being sure if this was something scary or neat, because I just had no concept of hallucinations. I remember crawling back into my bed eventually and staring out the window at a street light until morning. Thankfully I'm in my 30s now and I only start hallucinating whenever I get very stressed out. It's kinda become my little warning system to say "okay time to take a break and relax"

As a kid, I used to think the shadows in the corner of my room were people standing there in the night. I hated pulling the blanket over my head, made me nervous that I couldn’t see anything, but the fear got so bad that I had to convince myself that if I had the blanket up to my nose that whatever monster that was after me either wouldn’t see or recognize me lol. Also as a kid, there was a changing room that had a three way mirror set up that you could adjust, and if you stood in front of the middle one you could pull the other two on the sides closer making a triangle of mirrors, it was trippy but my brother and I loved messing with it.

[The Changing room] 29:02 My family owns a hair salon and has since before I was born. Their mirrors are exactly like that. You can see infinitely from the side profiles and from the front/back. It's super cool when the salon is full of people, but when you're there alone (especially after hours at night) it's a singularly offputing experience. I had to try to ignore them on many late night deep cleaning sessions during 2020 (we stayed open because we couldn't afford not to but sanitized the whole store every night)

The sweet dreams one (the 1st short film) was so close to what I experience as someone with schizophrenia. When it’s dark, I can see shadows in the shape of a person, and I sense some sort of presence in the dark corners in my apartment or even right behind me. I know it’s not real but it is so difficult to not believe it even a little. During the day, I’m paranoid of the real people I meet instead lol. I’m glad that I don’t actually see dead people or monsters. Thank god, because I’d die of fright

Portrait of God was absolutely my favorite. It shows how things can bring a response of intrigue and fear without needing to be big and loud. The moment his eyes moved to look at her was insanely good. I also imagine that yeah, with how biblically accurate angels look I imagine god looks just as terrifying but probably more in an uncanny sense. it portrays that great. good shit

the portrait of God is one of my favourit things ive seen in a while. what you said about the idea of God being terrifiyng to look at reminded me of the ‘biblically accurate’ angels that get thrown around these days. how truly biblically accurate they are is debatable but the repeating of “be not afraid” and the bewildering descriptions we get of them is fascinating to me. if angels are scary to humans with just a fraction of the power that God holds, it makes total sense for God would be terrifying to us

The portrait of God one is really neat, I love it when authors do interesting things with the concept of God and/or angels. My favorite examples of it are the short stories "Upon the Dull Earth", by Phillip K Dick (also responsible for Minority Report and the story that was adapted to Blade Runner) and, especially, "Hell is the Absence of God", by Ted Chiang which can be found in the book "Stories of Your Life and Others" (all of his stories here are great, one of them is the one that was adapted to the movie Arrival).
