As a newbie, I agree. I actually got Mythic first but haven't gone back to it since getting Scarlet Heroes. (I have Ironsworn but haven't read it). Even if you don't like the setting, monsters, rules, or lore, it's worth it for the charts in the second half of the book. Like I hear many veterans do, I plan on making my own system that suits the mechanisms I want from a tabletop RPG. But I'll definitely still be using the Scarlet Heroes charts.

From one veteran to another, thank you. Both for your service, and your kind comment.

I just picked up Scarlet Heroes this week - I had heard people talking a lot about it, for a long time... but I wasn't much of a fantasy gamer, and I had an idea that it was something different than it actually is. Now that I've looked it over, I don't think I'll be playing any other fantasy RPGs for a good long time. The mechanics are unbelievable!

Similar to you, I originally bounced hard off of Scarlet Heroes due to the OSR trappings, but recently after a new soloist was recommended the system and came back happy with how it worked I decided to give it another try. And so far I've been pretty happy with it as well. I have pulled out some of my other books for assistance in certain things that Scarlet Heroes doesn't quite cover for me, but that's more of a factor of me being an experienced soloist. For someone just getting into things this is a perfect place to start, especially if, as you say, something like Ironsworn doesn't work for them. (as a side note personally I found Ironsworn okay, but Starforged was a huge improvement that I enjoyed much more) One thing I appreciate too about the game that you didn't really cover is that Scarlet Heroes being an OSR-adjacent system makes it extremely easy to adapt content from those sorts of games for use with SH and there's a nice part in the book that covers exactly how to do this. I'm excited to dig out some of the old 2e modules we didn't managed to get to when we played in High School. Also, big agree that GM experience can help with being a soloist. Being able to critique what goes well or not so well and have that critical eye towards those things and apply it to your solo experiences is so very valuable.

Glad you liked it. If you haven't checked it out yet, look at World's Without Number, by that same author. Even if you don't like the system,it is a valuable world building tool. You can get the pdf for free on Drive thru.

@@solorpgguy Thanks! I will check it out for sure!
@@solorpgguy thank you, I had managed to find it. After reading it a bit I feel like SH still fits my purposes fine because I like how traits work and in this case the added complexity of the Foci don't really enhance the experience. I can definitely see myself recommending it to others for who that would be a bigger draw though!

I started my first solo game with the WWN heroic character rules which are similar to Scarlet Heroes but didn't get far yet. Both books are awesome! I've also used WWN in two games I've DM'd. Only scratched the surface. Thanks for the video! Would love to hear more from the solo with decades of D&D background angle!

Scarlet Heroes is not necessarily the most in-depth solo system, but in my experience, it's the most playable. If you don't want to spend a ton of setup time, or haven't trained your ability to interpret and self-GM, SH is a great starting point.

The charts are fantastic! I've had this game for many, many years and never took advantage of what it had to offer. Also, Worlds Without Number has a very intriguing setting. Very Dying Earth vibe to me. But for some reason, the Magic system didn't click with me. I'll have to take another look at it.

I have always had a desire to play RPGs but for one reason or another i haven't had the opportunity. My friend who plays DnD all the time suggested Scarlet Heroes as an introduction. I printed the PDF today. I've been reading over it and I'm excited to get started. I did a ton of research on solo RPGs after she made the recommendation and landed on SH. I also have Mythic GM emulator but that's probably going to be for later as i really want to focus on SH to get my feet wet 🙂

Scarlet Heroes is an excellent place to start for solo rpg gaming.
