Edward G. was AMAZING! Even as a little kid, I could appreciate his acting chops and liked his movies. He could do ANY genre.... He always delivered a "perfect" character.... performance. Compare his "Our Grapes Have Tender Vines" and "Little Caesar".... Entirely difference types of movies.... and he nailed them both. He was a perfect actor. I'm so glad that he is still appreciated. (an aside: isn't Joan Bennett simply gorgeous??? She too was an accomplished actor). I'm now 81 years old and I still love movies from my childhood.

I felt so.......bad for Johnny at the end when they take him to the chair an he crys out " I didn't do it , I didn't do it , give me a brake , won't somebody believe me ? One of the great film noir classics. Great writing, acting, very atmospheric direction. Irony prevalent in virtually every scene. EGR demonstrating his acting range, and Dan Duryea, often an underrated actor, turns in yet another terrific sleazeball performance. In real life, he was an Ivy League graduate who had a successful career in advertising before he went into acting, and, was a dedicated family man, active in his local PTA and the Boy Scout troop of his sons. I met Ms. Bennett on two occasions as she was the grandmother of my best friend in college. At my friend's wedding, she and I discussed this movie. She said this was her favorite of her films, along with The Woman in the Window, which was also directed by Fritz Lang. She said her working chemistry with Duryea was the most genuine of any actor she ever worked with. Glad to see that so many folks like this film...

An extraordinary job of of film directing by the often underrated Fritz Lang, shot on the Universal lot in 1945 in a high glossy style. Unusual care was taken in every shot of the B&W photography and lighting by Milton Krasner with its wonderful atmospheric shadows and dark streets. The particularly realistic art direction and set decoration by the Universal Art Department make this one of the finest examples of big studio work at its best. Lang, as only the best directors who worked under studio control, was somehow able to have an inordinate control every aspect of the filmmaking, getting perfect performances from everyone in the cast from Joan Bennett as the dumb girl in love with a sadist down to the smallest bit player, some of whose names do not appear in the credits. The screenplay is by Dudley Nichols, long time collaborator with John Ford, who ingeniously gets around the censorship of the time by making the most heinous human beings and their acts understandable and sympathetic. No small achievement, of course. and one that would have been impossible without the brilliant presence and humanity of Edward G. Robinson as the little man.

This was a first class production. At the time, Universal was considered lower class, as compared to MGM, Warners, Paramount or Fox, but the studio was fighting to get back on its feet after bankruptcy nine years before. This film helped Universal.

He was so very good a playing a begger or a king, it wasn't a difficult task for Mr. Robinson.! In life he was considered one of our most knowlegable Art collectors. Many paintings valued well into MIIIIONS of dollars. Later in life he & wife entered a bitter divorce resulting in the courts ordering Mr. R to divide the huge now even higher valued Art collection with ex-Mrs.G. Not even that blow would deter his acting career. In his very senior years he proved more then ever he was an actors actor right up to his death almost in front of the cameras. Thanks for keeping his great talent alive by running so many Edward G. Roninson films .

Just like Mr. James Cagney, Mr. Robinson was a very versatile actor. Funny how gentle men can be so dark. Mr. Cagney was unbelievable as Mr. George M. Cohen in Yankee Doodle, saw the movies as a young adult and fell in love with him then. I feel Dan Duryea was very under rated as an actor (played a great sleeze). A lot of filming errors on that show. Sets moving and falling, crew seen in the shots, in mirrors. Only thing that made that show work was Barnabas.

I love this era of Hollywood but I must say that Fritz Lang was, for the most part, held back by the Hollywood machine. As much as I love Scarlet Street and The Big Heat, they were midgets compared to the giants of his early period such as M, the first two installments of his Mabuse trilogy, and Destiny.

I have only seen a few of Lang's films including this but they have all been excellent. And to think this was the director's personal least favourite of his own work, I will be looking out for the rest. Scarlet Street moves at a quick pace without ever feeling rushed. For example it seemed like an eternity before Kitty finally turned openly mean. She is played perfectly shallow by Joan Bennett in this crossfire of awkward chance type relationships. Truly great work. I actually got to about 40 minutes watching it on Plex before the ads every 5 minutes almost drove me mad, particularly as they were all totally out of place betwixt scenes that were cut over 70 years ago. So very greatful I could watch it here without any interruptions.

Dang it... Cross deserved better in life than he got. I guess Hollywood wasn't going to promote someone getting away with murder. Those 2 destroyed his life and stole the only source of joy he had. It was justice they went to hell together. Too bad he couldn't see that.

Exactly! Cross was a kind, gentle soul. Between that harpie wife and those 2 grifters, he endured so much. His gullibility was his biggest fault.I really liked this picture, but a couple of things really bugged me. One was how easily he was manipulated. Two was the return of the "dead" husband. That was too kooky. Third was Kitty getting away with pretending to be the artist. Then hiding under a comforter when approached by Cross, driven mad by her cruelty, wielding an ice pick! As often as Johnny beat her, you'd think she'd know to - I don't know - MOVE! Lastly, the sad ending. Jeepers!

Good call. This was one of Hollywood's many propaganda pieces. The idea was and is to beat up Americans with Christian morality. Ironic that Edward G. Robinson was born Emanual Goldenberg and therefore Jewish. Those two crooks had it coming to them and I wish Goldenberg's character could have begun painting again and made big bucks and had a happy life. And I wish Christians today were tougher and would deal with the evildoers without this false guilt.

in real life EGR was a buyer of fine art, his real life collection was very valuable, his last movie was Soylent Green, he was dying and his art collection was mostly lost to his ex wife, like always women take a mans life, his money. but he let us with never ending art his work he was a true artist. a class act. RIP MR Robinson you were a master and class act thank you
