One of my favorite things about Waits is how he paints little vignettes in every song sometimes 20 in one song. It makes it easy to relate. When I was 20, I was seeing this girl, that I probably shouldn't have been. We went shopping in a thrift store one day. She hugged me at some point while we were browsing and I didn't think anything of it at the time, actually it felt really nice at the time. Then, after we left the store, she reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a trinket that she had stolen, just because. And she used me to carry it out. I was needless to say, less than thrilled. "She wants you to steal & get caught, cause she loves you for all that your not" has stuck with me ever since.

Good song. I really like the 4AD production sound the album got. This is slowed down slightly, which I assume was done to keep it from being deleted for some copyright violation. If you're wondering why her vocals are this deep/low and kinda draggy, it's from slowing down the recording/video.

exactly correct robert herman's. her voice is tiring like a bad hifi speakers. she has dubious intonation (poor pitch) and not a great feel for melody. often she just goes out of tune.

I think the problem is that these are all songs in a range made for TOM WAITS, not for her. If you listen to her singing with Pete Yorn on the album they just did together, she sounds fantastic (to me, anyway). I think it's just because all of these songs are too low for her and make her sound manly and a little awkward.
