Sean AND Kathy....Love your videos and live shows. You've inspired me to set up a small shop area in my garage and start tinkering on my guitars. I just bought a Mitchell MB100 bass and I'm starting on the frets and neck. I love the honesty you deliver. No need for fancy tools and bullshit, just get into the instrument and no lip flappin' 'cause what matters is how it plays! Great Channel!

Great video! This thing looks a lot like a cheap Dean banger guitar I used to have a while ago, it had the same fat neck and it was super light just a different headstock but the rest is spot on... even the square neck heel and pocket. Was a pretty lousy guitar tho, felt like a toy, high action flimsy electronics and a weird string spacing at the nut ... made a good slide guitar but wasn't very useful for other stuff so I gave it away because I had like 14 guitars back then before "the great guitar exodus". I currently have only 3 electric guitars, a Gibson smart wood exotic 2001 which is my baby ... needs a levelling and crowning job but that's THE guitar for me. Then a 1964 Eko model 100/1 that I'm restoring at the moment, did a fret level, crown and polish job, made a new pick guard and gave it new pots but I messed it up putting everything back trough the F hole I think ... worked fine when I tested it on the bench but put back in the tone became a second volume so I figure I broke or messed up the cap with the reinstall.... not looking forwards to that job I'll tell yah. Hate working on f hole guitars. And a cheap Harley Benton TE-52. Talk about fat necks... Jesus H Christ you could prop up docked ships with these things! But it plays very well and is just a great little cheap banger to have around.

I just bought the green version of this guitar. When I was first tuning it, it was kind of all over the place, so I popped the dust cover off to check the truss rod, it was not even finger tight. I put a little bit of tension on and after giving the strings a couple of days to stretch out and it's holding a tune fairly well. The only complaint I have is that the fingerboard is a bit rough, so much so that I can easily catch a string on it during a heavy bend. I'll probably see about putting a better neck on it at some point. After adjusting the pickups it definitely has that spicy Les Paul sound. A good beginner guitar for sure and most likely will be a great project guitar.

Fretboard wood looks like the Laurel wood on my cheap chinese strat. Its real wood, nice and hard, BUT really really dry and grippy on the fingers. You have to oil the heck out of it a few times until your fingers stop grabbing/squeaking during bends. And yeah I suspect it is dyed.

I agree, that’s a pretty honking neck. They probably didn’t want to pay the 1 cent it would cost to carve it down somewhat. The tuners are also a hot mess. We’ve seen much better options at this price point. Always an honest review at !

So how much is too much- fret height differences that is? I have a new guitar the has about 5 frets that cause the "tool" to rock. I can measure the difference using feeler gauges, The question is how do I determine if a fret needs to be filed. If I measure a .005 air gap is this ok or does it need to be trimmed down.
@latheofheaven10176 ай бұрын
If you play one fret lower than a high fret, does it make the string buzz/rattle? If so, the high fret is too high.
@drpc980146 ай бұрын
when shawn checks fret height he uses a tool that spans 3 frets. if he can rock the tool he fixes the high fret. i'm trying to determine if my high frets are too high, even though i don't hear buzz the tool indicates the fret is too high. since i've never done fret work i'd rather not file them if it's not necessary @@latheofheaven1017
@scarmyguitar6 ай бұрын
If the action is how you like it with no buzz then no filing needed.
@drpc980146 ай бұрын
@@scarmyguitar ok thanks but after watching many of your videos and several others, it seems that everyone works on any frets that measure high regardless. fyi: I'm too new to playing to tell if the action is too high or not.
