perfume is definitely my favorite book of all time. as well as the shining. i know pet semetary is said to be one of king’s scariest works, but i strongly believe in my opinion that the shining is probably his scariest story, as well as misery.

The Haunting of Hill House had a very specific scene that seriously freaked me out. Those who've read it will get it, "Whose hand was I holding?" God, I still remember the shivers it sent down my spine! Also, Lovecraft. Just Lovecraft.

Thumbs up. Great recommendations. I love it that you mention the editions too. Those penguin deluxe classics are wonderful, I have both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights in that edition. I still have not read Perfume, but enjoyed the movie a lot. Some spooky books with terrifying atmosphere I recommend: The Shinning, The Woman in Black, The Haunting of Hill House.

House of Leaves is great. One of the better books I read this year. I've also read Bird Box and The Silence. Both have been turned into Netflix movies. But...I'll just say the books are better. One that I really like a lot is The Ruins by Scott Smith. This was also turned into a movie, and while a not as good as the book, I actually like the movie as well. Anyways, it is my favorite horror novel.

I read “Classics” and it’s definitely not for everyone. If they aren’t your thing, it’s just a chore to read them. One thing I’ve noticed though is that classics reference other classics so you have to read more to understand the others. It’s a rough cycle.

OMGGitsCAROL - It was like watching a reeeeelly bad, formulated “horror” movie. Yano - ones where the helpless chick always runs and then trips and falls when the guy with the axe is chasing her. It just didn’t hit me right at any time. As for my favorite... I’m still searching. I just don’t scare easily. I guess the one that’s stuck with me all this time is the first horror/thriller I read when I was 11 (my friend brought it to my house one night during a sleepover). Helter Skelter kept me awake for days with the lights on in my room. I think what made it so unbearable is that it was all real. Horrific details in reality is worse to me than any fiction. And at that age, you remember what steals a little piece of your naïveté. Up until that point, I had no idea of depraved inhumanity.

Absolutely no shade, but you can always find the time to read if you want to. Not saying you have to, it’s just that I disagree with the statement of not having enough time. There are audiobooks that you can listen to while washing the dishes or cleaning the house, and there is a possibility to read on the train on your way to work etc etc etc
@OMGGitsCAROL4 жыл бұрын
For sure, my point wasn’t really about that - more about not feeling pressured to read certain books if you don’t want to. But honestly, when I am under stress its hard to focus on a book. Everyone is different though :)
