I know this is an older video but I wanted to still say thank you for this video. It has given me new perspective on non edged impact trainers and how else to utilize them. It amazes me every time I watch one of Doug Marcaida’s training videos. He has such a unique way of thinking outside the box but such a way of simplifying the explanation.

Just love how smoothly Doug speaks and demonstrates in the same time. Edit: While im at it, just imagine Doug in MMA with his Kali skills (since Kali can be used for Hand to Hand combat, and we've seen how great he is), every punches that goes towards him, he will use against his opponent. He'd probably make fighters submit in such a way we haven't seen before in MMA yet.

I recently purchased both from FOX, the 599 karambit trainer and actual knife, and Funker Tactical forgot to mention a very tiny but very important detail about the knife. While it's closed, you have the Emerson Wave feature facing away from you, but palm-side, there is a point. Not a sharp one, that's part of the "assisted opening" detail (when pushed, the blade is pushed out). That little point, when doing that little flail, if you hit something, that point can leave a real nasty mark or gash.

Very nice indeed. It is a pitty that you cannot use a knife with both sides of the blade sharpened but I understand that it won´t be allowed to have it on you in public places. I live in Europe and this differs from state to state. In the Czech Republic there is no official limitation so good and bad depending who is holding the knife. Back to the video, it is incredible how Doug uses closed and open knife and can change it very quickly. Awesome as usual ;-)

LEO standpoint, if you are in a situation that you need to defend yourself and this extent of force is justified and available, you MORE than likely would NOT be able to deploy a firearm. If someone is on you pummeling you and you can get your finger in a ring and pull across their torso, it is a fight ender. It would actually do MORE damage than a firearm. Using deadly force justifiably is not as black and white or easy as people tend to think. MOST of the time, you are defending your life against an ambush not an old west man vs man standoff. Force multipliers guys, your life is worth it.

Allan Paolo Mejia no he’s asking if the companion of Doug can actually fight with Doug with trainers instead of creating openings on purpose to let Doug show the uses of karambits. But if that’s what happens, he wouldn’t be able to actually show the karambit functions as clearly and organised as in this video, in a tutorial DVD, which is intended to teach people by showing the actions step by step and in slow mo. Also, the skills and physical capabilities of each person in those kinda fights are major factors in deciding who wins. Not to forget mentioning that real life knife fights end quickly so we wouldn’t really catch what happens with our nooby senses. But I have to say, even with trainers, against Doug, the opponent would most likely die either of accidental heavy injuries (like “oops sorry didn’t mean to break ur skull”) or of shame. Idk why did I type all that, seems like I have nothing else to do in my nerdy life. Thank you for reading till the end I guess.

That's an interesting tool, but I'll stick to my H&K .40 for self defense. I'm sure it could be quite useful if you were to train extensively in it's use, but it's still limited.
@Chanko239710 жыл бұрын
If you're lucky enough to carry and deploy a firearm to stop a threat then great, but keep in mind that within striking distances, a firearm is basically a one-directional stabbing weapon, meaning you need it pointed towards meat to do any damage at all. A knife is multi-directional weapon, meaning it can stab, slash and cause extensive damage from many different directions, making it the more dangerous weapon within that combat range. It also doesn't have problems with ammunition, stovepiping and misfires. Is that an argument for one or the other? Absolutely not! Carry both if you can.

I also checked "Samuel Nevarez" soundcloud and while some of his stuff has a very similiar style, this particular instrumental isnt there. Question: how sensitive is that wave feature? Does it NEED clothes to snag, or can you just flick it against anything to open the karambit? For example, your opponent's chin after an uppercut like the one at 4:11 in this video or some other exposed part during a strike (noticed that both guys in the video were wearing long sleeves--what if you both had t shirts on? There are less surfaces to hook then), or a pass over your free hand (the wave looks pretty hooked though, so if it does catch on bare skin I think I'd rather bruise/hook the other guy instead of myself). I know Doug said it'd scratch if it connects, but would it actually deploy if you opened your hand? I'm considering getting one for martial arts practice/self defense, so I'd appreciate it if anyone that owns/has used one can answer this.
@gord57 жыл бұрын
KPlaysHere I would say it depends on the angle of the wave feature snagging spike and also the sharpness/ pointiness. If for whatever reason one decides to sharpen it to a pencil tip’s sharpness then yeah I would say it will catch on a chin. Also, if your opponent has a sharp chin, that helps too. But even if it can catch onto a chin with the factory specs, I wouldn’t recommend doing that in training. Who would want to be hooked on the chin and have a bloody piece of metal spring into his/ her face right? XD when deployed the blade springs outward, which is extremely hazardous in training when u deploy it on chin and have an upward motion. It may hit your opponent’s nose or even eye.

I've been looking to get a folding karambit. And I like the idea of the pressure point manipulation and impact with the blade closed. That's the main reason I want a folder. But my concearn is with the Emerson wave feature. That's great for quick deployment, but wouldn't the "wave" impale your finger upon impact if striking with it while closed?
@bepps88537 жыл бұрын
Lot's of people that stab someone (like murder) end up cutting themselves because their hand slides down to the blade. Granted a big factor to that is when they stab multiple times and get bloody hands. I guess I need to find an effective way to punch something and see what happens. I'd be concerned about tearing a heavy bag though.
