Love climbing and doing the Munro's in Scotland and would love to do some hiking when i'm in Thailand. After watching your channel i'm definitely going to have a few trips hiking around Thailand. Is there any decent books you could recommend for hiking and trails in Thailand ?
@karlsthailand
@karlsthailand 4 ай бұрын
Tbh I don’t know of any such books, definitely not in the English language. Most of the stuff I see is from random posts on the internet in Thai. Some of the best hikes are arranged by the National Parks. They’re very good but hard for foreigners to book because of the language barrier as it often involves accessing Facebook pages in Thai script. If you’re here for half of the year you have plenty of time though. Glad you enjoy my channel. Thank you

Hi Karl, love your videos, I will be travelling to explore North Thailand, I have few queries on these treks. Do these treks need a guide or is it DIY? In case it's mandatory to Trek with a guide, will the officers in the national park help us?
@karlsthailand
@karlsthailand Жыл бұрын
This particular trek has to be through Thong Pha Phum National Park. Actually they might only operate it in the Cool Season. They’re not expensive but you’ll probably need a Thai person to book it for you in advance. Takes a bit of planning but well worth it. You can hire porters who will carry up to 30kg up and down and put up/take down your tent for you for 1500 Baht per hike.

You can hire National Park Rangers at some of the National Parks to take yourself or a small group hiking but it’s best to start early and ask at the HQ. Lol. It was only scary for a pretty short section but the rest of the hike is just stunning all the way

Cheers Jason. I’d seen several videos before I went there and it’s very hard to portray the scale of the place and the steepness accurately

Is winter the best time for these treks?
@karlsthailand
@karlsthailand 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would say November to March is the best time for most of these hikes. In the case of this hike I believe that you can only do it November to February or thereabouts

Hey Karl, next time you do a high angle deep decent treat it like you are climbing down a ladder with your head facing upward, your body towards the ground and your feet downward. Much easier and safer than your head/body facing upward and your feet downward.

You need to spend one night at or near Thong Pha Phum National Park HQ because you have to register your attendance for the hike a 6am and also spend a night at the campsite up on the ridge. Please be aware that this hike is only available at certain times of year. The best bet is to find their number on Google and get a Thai person to call on your behalf well before you wish to take the hike

@karlsthailand 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnygerard6605 From November through February I would say, in fact there might not be yours at other times. It’s also worth checking the Khao San Nok Wua trek organized by nearby Khao Leam National Park. (I did a recent video featuring it) as I believe it is available for a longer period each year.

I want these adventures but I wouldn't have made that one. I get vertigo too and am sure I would have glanced right or left at some point, got dizzy and fell to my death. 😲 as for holding a gimbal at the same time...I fell down some stairs today in my house holding a gimbal so I am sure I couldn't hold it on this trip. #truestory. 😀
@karlsthailand

The gimbal is a bit awkward sometimes. I find the stairs in this part of the World a bit less consistent than in the West so don’t be too hard on yourself over your gimbal accident

That’s always a risk although I don’t think you’d get many snakes high up on the mountain but then falling is a risk too and in Thailand snakes are a risk even in rural villages. Personally I am happy with the risk

I see more snakes around towns than I do in the jungle for sure. A herpetologist once told my it’s because they are attracted to the mice and rats that thrive around human habitation. Definitely plenty of snakes in Bangkok lol
