Just a tip for living alone that my dad taught me! Get the building manager, your dad, landlord, a handy friend or do it yourself, but replace the screws in your door plate! The standard ones are really short so it’s easy to kick the door in, if you replace it with a long screw that goes into the door frame it’ll be way harder to kick in if someone tries to break into your place! ❤️ also put a piece of wood in the window frame to prevent the window from being able to be opened all the way! And if you have a patio door put a piece of wood in the track between the door and the frame so it can’t be opened!

The piece of wood in the window or patio door is also really good when you have small kids so they cant open the door or window and get out or let someone in I taught my sons that me or my husband opens the door when someone rings the bell, they are not allowed

best advice i’ve ever received for living alone: if you’re walking/running a lot, or at odd hours; big dog. it’s more intimidating. if you’re not home often, or a heavy sleeper; small dog. they’re more likely bark a lot and cause a ruckus. most thief/attackers are very concerned with being inconspicuous and will avoid a scene! also, a generic “home protected” sticker is a better detergent, putting the logo ones the companies give you for advertisement just tells a burglar how to turn off your specific system and how long they have! and get to know your neighbors! be involved in the community, so if anyone tries to slip in or out, there is no possible way to write off, “could be a boyfriend/moving in/service,” and they’re more likely to take a better look and get some kind of description on them!

My brother and several of my close family friends are prison guards, and after I bought my place and was living alone for a month I adopted my shepherd husky cross, and when I told them they all nodded and said ‘great call’. When I asked why, they said ‘directly from the mouth of babes - all of the inmates say ‘why the f*ck would I go to the house with a dog when two houses over they don’t have one? Makes no sense.’’ They said it’s hands down the biggest deterrent, and criminals hate dogs especially because they sense that they’re up to no good and are rarely fans. Definitely get a dog if you can, the unconditional love is enough but the protection is the cherry on top.

Here’s what I’ve learned based on this and my experiences: If someone is aggressive enough for law enforcement and judges to take it seriously and grant a restraining order, they’re aggressive enough to violate the restraining order.
@mmwtcasmalltown
@mmwtcasmalltown Жыл бұрын
Yes but don't let that make you not get one. My bf have followed everything officers have told us regarding our situation. First send them one final message "don't contact me anymore" etc etc. Then if they contact you again or show up at your house it's now considered harassment and now law enforcement can do something which in our case once he showed up at my bfs my bf called the police and they showed up and he was still out front in his cat. After talking to us and him and us showing the cops our phones he was charged with 2 counts of harrassment (case still pending) when they told us he was getting ticketed they suggested we go file for protection orders. We did just that and in our cases he didn't show up to either hearing which in my state means the protection order is automatically made permanent. No here is the thing....we knew he'd violate it but we were sure to get all the proof when he did, as much as we could which has now resulted in 2 arrests (cases still pending) so now he's dug himself a nice grave to lay in. It's a slow process and we are fortunate enough the police have been mostly helpful. In the end he will likely be doing some jail time. They really should file restraining orders regardless of the likelihood they will violate cuz then they can actually be locked up which is the only way to get them to go away.

Restraining orders are basically “we will shake our finger at them WHEN they end up hurting you”. Then the system says “we didn’t see it coming”. Also, we had a no contact order and they gave our abuser our home address and work to inform him of the place he had to stay away from…

My ex got out of prison ( he was in for violent things he did to me then attempted escape.) They didn't notify me like they were supposed to. He was on house arrest. Took off the box. Came to where I was at 1 am with a gun. He's not allowed to have fired arms ever!!! I called police. They pulled him over outside my place. Called his probation officer who said have him report to them on Monday morning. To just go to the address he's assigned to. ????? Wtf? Seriously he's already tried to off me, and after doing years for it has come after me with a weapon and you pat him on the head and send him on his way. The restraining order is useless unless they end you.

My dog sounds like a massive, aggressive guard dog but is a 82 pound loveable lab. He didn't make a peep the whole first 6 months we had him so his first bark really took us by surprise bc he was still a skinny, lanky puppy with this really deep, loud bark. I have 2 dogs, one of the lean, athletic pits, and a little Dachshund mix. The pit LOVES EVERYBODY. She doesn't have that sense that most dogs have about people not being good. The Dachshund mix on the other hand. Lord. I trust her judgment. She will not hesitate to bark. She hated the maintenance guy at my last apartment. He seemed ok, but because of her I kinda kept my distance. And she doesn't sound like a small dog either, she's got a big bark. If she hears anything sketchy outside she definitely let's me know. Which can be irritating sometimes, but at the same time I'm glad people can hear my dogs bark, especially since I live alone.

41:17 "It's weird that a college dorm would be half student housing, half hotel." If you've heard of the Cecil Hotel, this is the same thing that causes a lot of safety issues with that hotel. They don't advertise or mention that a few floors of the building have low-income apartments and it's on skid row which is a very high-crime area. This attracts a lot of addicts, criminals, and homeless people. They also have a separate entrance to the building and 2 or 3 floors that they market as part of a different hotel name, the people that rent those hotel rooms don't even know they are in the same building as the Cecil Hotel. However, the entire building shares elevators and stairs. So you have tourists who don't know any better and don't know the area, in a high crime area, sharing space and elevators with potentially dangerous people. A perfect recipe for disaster.

I have a very cute and adorable story about a rottweiler. One time I was going to visit my bff at her house for a noon gathering, and I was waiting for my Uber (that was like 3 minutes away) outside a subway station. Then one guy approached me and tried to do small talk, and I just prayed for my ride to arrive. Suddenly another guy with a huge rottweiler (unleashed) passed beihind me, but I made a little noice to get the dog's attention, and remove my attention for the talking stranger. The dog stopped, looked at me then at his owne, then walked towards me and stood right between the talking guy and I. Didn't move until my Uber arrived. He was protecting me 🥺🥺 and the owner was very annoyed lol.

I’m retired LEO & in Ella’s situation the police could have done much more. Firstly he never gave them a a name. If they called police they could have identified him to see if he was wanted, registered sex offender , criminal history etc. Secondly there are laws he broke, in my state at least, like trespassing, menacing, when he locked her in the room would be considered false imprisonment, stalking might apply and depending on the totality of the situation could have been arrested on the spot. At the very least they would have had to file an incident report that all this took place with his real name attached, officially trespassed him & filed it w campus police. I was amazed that they let him get away w o ever knowing his name especially in this particular situation where he nearly trapped/ abducted the woman. I could almost guarantee if I would have answered this call I would have arrested him to get him away from her for at least that night. This was not her fault at all. She is not to blame There are steps she could have taken to hopefully avoided all this. She should have asked before all this if he stayed there, name etc before helping him into a room. If he was a student it’d be on file if a hotel guest same thing. The fact she just trusted him is startling to me. Women need to always be on guard nowadays. It’s a shame but sadly a fact to keep y’all safe. I’ve instilled this into my 20yo daughter who’s in college. Always look strangers in the eyes, don’t pretend to be on the phone w a friend etc like you said. Just be very aware of your surroundings.

The striped man story reminded me about a story my dad told me from his childhood. He lived in a small house as a kid in the 70’s and slept on the couch bc he didn’t have a bedroom. The telephone was on an end table next to where he laid his head at night. One month, my grandma got a phone bill for several long distance calls made almost every night. When she found out the phone number that was being called nightly, she called it and a woman answered saying that her son calls her from that number every single night. My grandma was appalled but the mother did not seem surprised to hear that her son had been breaking in and using their phone. So long story short, a man was breaking in every night and using the phone next to my 10-year old dad while he was asleep.

@@envymordecai4429 I spent two years single after I separated from my ex husband, because the 14 yr relationship with him was toxic and I kept turning a blind eye to his cheating, I found myself dating someone who was literally drinking 24/7 and if he wasn’t wasted he wasn’t interested… and then shortly after I got into a relationship with someone and dated them for 6 months before getting physical and moved in together after dating for a year. The alcoholic was awful, but he wasn’t anything compared to the man I spent a year with before living under the same roof only to discover I didn’t know him AT ALL, I couldn’t even go pee without him literally sitting on my lap. I couldn’t shower without him in the bathroom, and the one time I did he thought someone else had snuck in there with me. One day, he swore he saw my ex husband in the kids room slapping my a$$ and he said “he can stay overnight for the kids in their room, but he can’t be touching on you like that I won’t stand for it” and just kissed me on the forehead like it was an everyday thing. Needless to say when I did leave him, I got sucked back in, and things turned awful and he ended up in prison with a no contact order stamped on him, and has to register as a sex offender when he is released after 7 yrs inside, and will be on probation for 23 more years.

when i was 12 years old i took a self defense class and it was incredibly eye opening. we watched videos from real people who had survived very scary situations and also learned how best to defend ourselves as well as where to strike your attacker for maximum pain. this was 14 years ago for me and i still use many of the tips i was taught. like always remembering to lock your car. because if you walk away for a second someone could sneak into your backseat and hold a weapon up to you when you get back into the car. we also learned that to get the maximum effect when striking an attacker, go for three areas. kick them in the groin, punch them in the throat/nose, and worst case scenario literally scratch out their eyeballs. they also told us a dog will be a great thing to ward off intruders, but even if you don’t have a dog put up a “beware of dog” sign because most intruders want to avoid disruption and will avoid houses with animals. another fact we learned is that men tend to grab a woman’s hair when attacking her so if at all possible when being attacked try to reposition yourself so that your back never faces your attacker as they can grab your hair and overpower you. we watched a video of a woman telling a story about how a man came into her house in the middle of the night and climbed on top of her to sa her. he put his hand over her mouth and her adrenaline allowed her to bite his finger clean off. scary stuff but i honestly think most young girls should take a class like i did. it really helped me build more awareness of my surroundings as well as help to develop my intuition.

My sister just went away to college this year, and I made sure I have her location and set up her medical ID and showed her the emergency SOS. I’m shocked more people don’t know about that. Apple needs to include a specific paper or inform the customer about that feature when they buy a device. It’s so helpful. I recently learned that it updates your location to the police if you’re being taken somewhere.

@@beckylewis70 YES! You would have to go into settings>Safety & Emergency. In that section you can make a medical ID, emergency contacts, set up/turn on the emergency SOS feature. Once you set your emergency contacts you can also share info with emergency contacts where you have to allow google maps, so if your SOS is activated it will share your location with emergency responders and your em. contacts. You can also turn off alarm sound when the SOS is activated. The newer the model the more options there are such as Crash detection and Earthquake alerts.

Here’s my spooky story that has literally shaken me to my core. When I was about 13 I was over at my childhood friends house. They lived in a beautiful two story home. My friends room was located on the second floor, it also had its own private bathroom which lead to her closet where the door to their attic was. She was their only daughter so her room was very lavish (i.e. chandelier above her bed, hanging mirrors on the wall, etc.), which is why when we were in her closet I was caught off guard by the box of pennies in front of the door. When I asked her why they were there she said it was because the door would just open randomly and that was the only way to keep it shut. Which I thought was odd but didn’t think anything of it. As we continued hanging out, we were talking about Halloween and decorating. She then told me about this creepy vampire statue that said the typical “Ah, Ah, Ah.” They kept it in the attic along with all the other decorations, well I guess one year while setting it up they wanted to know if it still worked so the set it off and sure enough it did the “Ah, Ah, Ah” well as it went off her mom said that it had no batteries. So the question back what the fuck? Why did it just go off with no batteries? Well this story gave me the chills but whatever we go on hanging out and talking about weird spooky shit. Then out of nowhere all the mirrors on her wall start to sway and then the door to her room starts to jiggle. We yell at her brothers to knock it off but we get no answer. Then what sounds like a million pennies falling comes from her bathroom, keep in mind the door to the bathroom is shut. We hear the vampire statue get set off and do the “Ah, Ah, Ah” so naturally we start screaming bloody murder afraid to get out of her bed. Her dad rushed up to the room and asked us what the hell we were screaming for. We told him what happened and he obviously thought we were just being dramatic. Then when her mom came home we told her about what happened. As we told her the story she got a shocked look on her face and began to turn considerably pale. When we asked what the look was for, she told us about how when she was about our age her and her cousins thought it’d be fun to mess with a ouija board. One of her cousin didn’t want to use it and went off to the upstairs floor of her aunts house. Well as they were messing with it they were saying and lame Erin was, and jokingly asked for the spirits to push her down. Well as soon as they asked for Erin came crashing down the stairs breaking her ankle, and I shit you not at the same time as she says her cousin fell down the stairs a fucking picture fell off the wall at the same time. My friend and I still hang out to this day but have a code of silence about what happened that day. It had literally shaken me to my core, and every time I tell this story I still get paranoid that whatever caused that to happen is still watching over us.

It was hard to tell if OP was just trying to keep calm to avoid the man from getting hostile, but then I heard 'I didn't want to be rude' EFF THAT. By that point honestly having the door closed and being in a enclosed hidden space with a creep would be enough to make me nope out. I've noped out of walking NEAR people that gave me bad vibes. And with COVID I make a point to not walk near anyone while I'm out if I can avoid it. If people think it's weird or rude, it doesn't matter do what makes you safe.

That first story hit home. When I broke up with my ex, I was scared because this was a guy who added people from my college to keep an eye on me. Like he knew everything I was doing and who I was with and where I was. He was in the military and when we were dating, he would always show me and be very adamant about where his weapon was and that he could have them on college campus because he was an MP and he was above campus policy. So when we broke up, I was looking over my shoulder for several months.

I remember one night when I was in my early 20’s I slept over at a friend’s house after a late night out. This was in South Boston. Her room was on the ground floor and it was a very hot summer night so I guess she opened the window at some point and there was no screen in. I was sleeping facing the window and she was on the other side of the bed. I opened my eyes at some point in the middle of the night and staring at me through the open window was a guy, just standing there and staring. I screamed bloody murder and literally leaped over my friend in the bed onto the floor. I guess my scream woke her up and I told her what happened, she never slept with the window open again. This was incredibly dumb to begin with, something much worse could have happened to us, but I’ll never forget this guy’s creepy face just staring at two girls sleeping.

I tried to keep my distance (pre pandemic). The woman started to make a big deal about it, like I was an asshole, and my boyfriend at the time, who was walking with me, was appalled that someone would treat her like that, "she's a human!". Yes! Having cameras is absolutely a MUST!! my husbands cousin broke into our house ( my husbands parents house ) and stole jewelry from his parents room. We know it was him bc he had texted my husband to ask him where he was at and he NEVER does that. And when my husband told him he was at work , he opened the message but never replied. And before that I had literally caught him trying to break in through the small bathroom window. He said he was “ just looking “ for my husband. I’m like yeah that makes sense, trying to come in through the bathroom window instead of knocking on the door, totally normal. But because no one actually saw him take anything and we didn’t have cameras, cops couldn’t do anything. and one of the chains had sentimental value to my father in law. Apparently it was his very first chain that he saved up money to buy himself when he first came to the US from Mexico. :/

Wow this episode unlocked a memory for me. I was almost hit by a car because of a crazy ex. I had just graduated high school, it was the start of summer and I started dating a guy I knew from when I was a sophomore. He was 3 years older than me and had already been out of school but we waited to date until I turned 18, just incase. He was with a girl for a few months then he broke up with her because she cheated on him. We finally got together a few months after they broke up. One night We went to a party then afterward we went back to his house and I stayed over. The next morning there was a knock on his bedroom window. It was his EX!! She saw me laying in bed then flipped out on him and me. She tried breaking into the house while screaming at us. She got into her car and started to drive away. I told him since she’s gone imma head home and I’ll see him later. I was walking home and I hear a car coming up behind me.. it was her!! I called my best friend who lived right down the street and have her come out for backup. His ex almost hit me with her fkin car! I ran into the field next to the street so she couldn’t hit me. I see my friend running over to me. I felt relieved at this point but His ex gets out of the car, gets in my face, and tells me to stay the fuck away from him. My friend and I both said “you aren’t together anymore you psycho bitch!” She looks like she’s about to hit me then my friend gets in front of me and like buffs herself up to let his ex know to stay back lol. I’m small and my friend was bigger than I was so I’m so thankful for her standing up to protect me. Anyways, the ex drives off, for good this time and my friend and I walk to my house. This was all at like 7am. 🤦🏽‍♀️ People are fkin crazy. I was with him for 4 years before I broke it off because I had to move to another state. This was all about 13 years ago. I’m married now but damn I’m so glad I never experienced a crazy ex again! That was such a scary experience. Anyways, that hotel story made me so angry. Damn foreigners. Sick in the head these people are.. 😔

As a fellow Duluthian (I actually went to Morgan's rival school lol), I usually love all your stories about home because I know exactly what you're talking about, but this episode freaked me out 😂 (even though I'm down in the cities now). Love seeing a good group of Minnesotans get success on here!

The one about the partner saying he wanted to kill his ex is eerily similar to a situation with my (now ex). My cousin was his middle school bully (I didn't know) and one day boyfriend and cousin met at a family gathering and boyfriend said he wanted to torture and kill cousin and cousin's partner for being together. It scared the shit out of me. He's doing better now and went to therapy but that was an absolute no for me.

I have a pitbull and a basset hound. I figured i needed a guard dog since bassets are known to be friendly and lazy. When I asked my neighbor to go check on my house to see if a package was there, the basset was guarding and barking so aggressively that it scared the shit out of my neighbor. My Pitbull ran out the yard to a friend's house until we got home. lol

I used to work the front desk of a dorm in college. My second year, they turned one side into a hotel. It was cheaper than local hotels and a lot of parents took advantage of it. We never had overnight shifts, the latest we worked was 9:00, and then if anything can up after, people would have to call the RA on duty for help. I never had anything too creepy, but I did have a very angry parent show up angry that he and his wife didn't have a reservation made. I tried my best to help but he was so agitated and mocking me and yelling and telling me I was stupid. I was so scared I started shaking and crying while his wife just watched. I called my boss to come help. Turns out he had a reservation for a completely different place.

There’s a lot to be said for a big dog with a big bark. We have a goldendoodle who looks like a big teddy bear, but he has a big bark that scares everyone. He’s about 80lbs and when he jumps against the door and starts barking when someone walks up, whoever is there always jumps. He’s made delivery guys drop packages and take off. Also, ring cameras are great. We have several on our property and always know what’s going.

I'm a receptionist and when guests need a new key we have to confirm their room and identity (first and last name). It's more to avoid giving someone else's room key by error, but in this case it could have prevent this whole ordeal. Plus, shouldn't there be someone with her at all times? I don't know how it works in those residences, that's why I'm asking. I know there's the campus security but I imagine it's quite big so, idk.

Ten years ago, I traveled the UK and Ireland with my friend, and we stayed in hostels. Some of the hostels were universities that rented out rooms as hostels in the summer. It was a good experience for me, and felt secure. There were even up residents staying there for weekend trips or stag dos 🤷🏻‍♀️

i used to live in a student housing apartment that was connected to a pretty popular hotel in 2019. there were elevators for the hotel in the parking garage and a side door for the apartments that we had to use a key fob for. i never held the door open for anyone coming in behind me if i didn’t recognize them. hated that building ugh.

i love this episode!! when listening about the dorm/ hotel story i had so many thoughts that might be relevant so wanted to share (not sure this is exactly what she experienced but what myself and others did at my school) !! I used to be a resident advisor (similar to ellas position) in nyc. 1. In resident advisor positions or housing roles there’s usually free or discounted housing which is why a lot of people stay in the job even if it puts them in dangerous situations. having a job that directly affects your housing and living can force you into difficult situations. 2. during the summer it’s really common(in nyc at least) for dorms to have students and other guests staying who aren’t students for extra money. at the dorm i worked in we would have adults come stay for conferences, competitions etc and students. my dorm had to do this to break even each year (which is nuts!!) 3. it’s super weird she didn’t have campus security in the building but i know this varies from place to place on what the security is like. I hope this helps to offer some perspective , the story she’s shared is crazy and i hope she’s recovered!! again love this episode so much!!

#1: He was basically entertaining it by not shutting it down. #2: Nah this is why you always verify if people are supposed to be there 😫 My school St. Francis Xavier University turn certain dorms in hotels during the summer so it does happen. #3: Stories like these is the reason why I have security plans for my future house. Rings can get hacked.

I lived alone in a not great part of the Midwest (small town IL) ….. got myself a Great Dane and a German shepherd. I was NEVER messed with, even walking my dogs alone at night. Even my dad who is SUPER overprotective was like “yeah, not too worried about your place getting broken into!” If only they knew the Dane was barking because she is terrified of everyone, but also desperately wants to make friends, and the shepherd is an anxiety ridden social butterfly 😂. Big dog privilege is suchhhhh a thing

I kept an American bandogge mastiff. One is all it takes. I had two. In the day time, I got looks, walking them. Mind you, my neighbourhood is middle class. Night time? Hmm. No muzzles on them. Just in case. Middle class means nothing to creeps.

I love this podcast, definitely one of my favorites! The only thing I would suggest / ask for personally is for trigger warnings/content warnings before each episode that may bring up potentially triggering or distressing topics such as kidnapping, m*rder, or assault.

Hahaha I have a shepherd and a pitbull and my shepherd definitely has to hype my pittie up to get her going (otherwise she is a lounger), but as a team they are terrifying if they see a potential threat. They’re incredible, sweet babies otherwise. ♥️ dogs ftw 🙌🏽 Definitely recommend dogs and Ring and SimpliSafe!!
