So clean. Incredibly controlled dynamics and tight playing from everyone. Horns were on point, groove was tasty as heck, vocal performance was flawless! And the interaction of the group in this live performance is so fun to watch, but more than that, if you close your eyes you can still HEAR the energy of people in a room together playing off one another and trading energy. Really well done.

The melancholy of the vocals juxtaposed with the upbeat driving force from the horns and drums creates such a delicate sweet and sour balance that the song very nearly crumbles between the two, but the fact that it somehow works makes it even more powerful, beautiful and damn catchy. I just experimented and first listened to the song without watching the video. I listened while checking email. I still found myself jamming along! My musician brain somewhat checked out and I enjoyed the groove. I could still see Jack in my head since that's what I first heard, but after that it all just flowed over me and I loved it. Only at the very end of the song did I realize that there were horns there, even though they had been there all along. They so perfectly fit in. The bass was so smooth and matched everything well. Nothing stood out too much or too little, it was all just an awesome combo, with the most up front thing being Monica's laid back lyrics - so smooth. Now I went back and watched the video. I can see and now recognize all the guitar licks, all the bass runs, the little accents with the drums and the funky pop of the horns. I probably would have done that the first time somewhat if I hadn't also been checking email, but I got an appreciation from a different perspective (I think maybe that of a non-musician). SOOO GOOD!
