I know it’s sort of a joke song, but Scatman John actually had a pretty inspirational life. He was born with a stutter that made him too nervous to sing, so he played piano for most of his career. It was only in his 50s that he decided to become a scat performer and made this song as a way to inspire kids with stutters. It made him a worldwide hit, (especially in Japan for some reason) and he did two more notable songs before he died of lung cancer a few years later at 57. He was completely at peace when he passed, declaring: ‘Whatever God wants is fine by me ... I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty.’ Scatman John. Legend.

@kassandra odessa very true, just as kids want attention adults seek it the same and what's worse is that they decide to seek it in the internet, i feel they do it because they have a crappy life and want people to have the same as them, they can't be happy so they want noone to be happy and therefore they troll in the internet, try to start arguments in the internet, they want things to burst into flames in the internet and so on

@kassandra odessa what i have found very effective is to return the rock to the person that throws it, not directly but noticeable and not really pay attention to what that kind of people have to say for or against you, aslong as you figure out what has to be done to "fix" the wrongs nothing else comes between

For those who may not know, Mr. John is telling the listener to get out there and do whatever you want to do, because if he, a man with a pronounced stutter, can do something as amazing as sing and make a music video, then so can you. It's rather nice and touching.

Scatman John's last public words were "Whatever God wants is fine by me ... I've had the very best life. ." He learned scat singing as a kid because of his severe stutter and became a modestly successful piano player prior to recording his album 'Scatman' and adopted the stage name 'Scatman John' He became a world famous pop star at the age of 53, recorded a song encouraging people with stutters, and died in 1999. He had an interesting story.

If anything, 80's was all about showing you could overcome adversity through determination and willpower, no matter who fought against you. 80's was all about Underdog stories, as well as action heroes and sci-fi.

What a guy. All of his songs are filled with deep, positive messages, combined with the goofy lyrics it just gives you the feeling that everything will be okay and you can make it if you believe. "Everybody stutters one way or the other so check out my message to you, as a matter of fact, I don't let nothin' hold you back if the Scatman can do it, so can you". Even if people didn't always get his message, his songs are still so much fun and brought joy to many. He suffered from severe stutter and he was ridiculed his entire life, but at one point he turned his stutter, his weakness, into his strength with these songs. Even though he only did this very late in his life and only enjoyed it for a few years before getting lung cancer, meaning he only got a few positive years and tons of years of being ridiculed, when he was close to death, he was still thankful for the life he lived. "Whatever God wants is fine by me ... I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty." Rest In Peace, "Scatman" John Paul Larkin. 1942 - 1999. And sorry for being a Wikipedia page, I just think people should know this since so many are just here for the memes and don't know who he is.

John Paul Larkin was born suffering from a severe stutter, which led him to an emotionally traumatic childhood. At 12 he began to learn the piano and later was introduced to the art of scat singing through records by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong etc. The piano provided him with a means of artistic expression to compensate for his speech difficulties, and he "hid behind the piano because he was scared to speak." He became a professional jazz pianist in the 70s and 80s, playing in jazz clubs. In 1990, he moved to Germany and discovered an appreciative jazz culture. This was when he first decided to take a monumental step away from his insecurities and add singing to his act for the first time. His agent thought of combining scat singing with modern dance music and hip hop effects. Larkin was hesitant at first, terrified of being laughed at, worried that listeners would realize he stuttered.... so his wife, Judy, suggested that he talk about it directly in his music. Working with dance producers he recorded the first single, "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)". After his first big hit, he adopted the new name and persona of "Scatman" John. At age 53, Larkin became a worldwide star. In 1998 he was diagnosed with lung cancer, but he continued his musical work despite being told to take it easy from his workload. He released his fourth and final album and shortly afterwards was sent into intensive treatment. He died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 57. (for all the above, source: Wikipedia.) He was a kind soul that despite his health condition and horrible childhood was glad to have given others the courage to express themselves and felt grateful for having achieved fame even though late :) "If the Scatman can do it, so can you." He was the best. Edit: Thanks for the likes. No need to comment that I took it from wikipedia, thankyouverymuch, I SAY SO MYSELF in the comment, duh.🤭 (Read more carefully next time). I know lots of people wouldn't bother checking his bio, and I wanted them to know how great he was. That's all.

He is like Rowan Atkinson with the stuttering, he couldn't act because of the stuttering and was stuttering a lot normally. But when he started playing somebody else (acting) his stuttering would disappear.Even though he overcame that he still was denied because he wasn't that good looking. So he made his own show (Mr. Bean) and now he is one of the most well known actors. The lesson from this story is to not give up.Just like Scatman John with his stuttering it was the same with Rowan. They both overcame their problems. And again the lesson is: Don't give up on your hopes and dreams. If you try hard enough it can happen.

My uncle is mentally disabled and this has always been his absolute FAVORITE song! Every time we have a family event, I always make sure to request this song to get him up on the dance floor so he can dance his heart out. He gets so into it and we always love seeing him so happy. It's the best feeling. :)

John died in 1999 aged just 57. Not old, but older, and performing in a sharp suit. Iconic. His wife (who died last year) suggested that, since her husband had developed the courage to sing as well as play, he ought to make direct reference to stammering and stuttering in his lyrics, which he did. But the song has some tremendously powerful lyrical messages. The first is that stuttering as harnessed might actually form a new genre of music, which was the idea of the scat. But beyond even that we hear certain prophetic-sounding lyrics: Why should we be pleasin' any politician heathens who would try to change the seasons if they could? This references the idea from the book of Ecclesiastes that "to everything there is a season". The questioning of politicians' rights, when they are non-believers is striking. The message about the seasons continues later with a very telling: I'm the professor, and all I can tell you is while you're still sleepin', the saints are still weepin' 'cause things you call dead haven't yet had the chance to be born. The politicians of the Earth are thus contrasted with the saints... This is very much a la 1 John 5:19...

Adam Clowes +Jon M I still think the 90's was the best decade for music. Grunge, Hip Ho and metal coming out of the US, Britpop and Indy from the UK, and the Eurodance/House from the likes of Germany, Holland and Spain. Everything just seems so manufactured these days. Targeted towards kids spending money. Promoting promiscuity and vast wealth. "Artists" (and I use that term loosely) no longer have any soul. They no longer make music which speaks to the kids about what really matters in life, like bands such as Oasis The Verve, Pulp, Run DMC, NWA, Nirvana, and artists such as Bjork, Alanis Morrisette and Tupac Shakur did.

I was watching this and my mom thought it was weird/funny because she was/is a metal head. So she was used to Slayer, this was out of her world. I danced to this in front of a Zenith (or maybe Sony Trinitron, cant remember exactly. we had 2 tvs) CRT tv that had a huge ass on it and was heavy as shit. I thought he was silly because i was used to metal and rock. So his studder ( he had a studder and you can hear it in other songs) made me laugh when i was young. I was around 5 then.

@@BraeburnTV Vocoding, speech synthesis and the like has existed since the 60s, and been in use in popular music since the 70s at the earliest. As the vocal on this track here was almost certainly heavily comped, quantized chopped up and resampled in a dance music production environment (rather than being a continuous live performance) there is the possibility that it was also pitch corrected to the track, and the technology certainly existed to do so. It is true that the style in pop/dance music that is called to mind by the term "autotune" was only formalized as a sort of trope around the late 90s, and eventually would have been packaged as various hardware/software suites to make it available as a kind of 'off the shelf' effect, but those same elements of technology would have been available and used by the producers of this track. Not to take away anything from John's skill as a vocalist

RIP to a legend. If you have a look at his Wikipedia, he had one heck of a stutter as a kid, and was mercilessly bullied for it. He decided to take this and turn it into song, which in my opinion is the true mark of a good, kind soul. Even his Wiki picture has him smiling, and we need people like John here now more than ever.

Everybody stutters one way or the other So check out my message to you. As a matter of fact don't let nothin' hold you back. Everybody's sayin' that the Scatman stutters But doesn't ever stutter when he sings.
