The subtle hints they dropped that Atreus was Loki throughout the game like when Atreus first found out he was a God, the first thing he asked was "Can i turn into an animal?" and Loki the God, as you may know, is a shape shifter. And then, when they first speak to the World Serpent, it says Atreus' voice sounds familiar. Now it makes sense because Loki is literally the father of the Serpent which was hit so hard by Thor it traveled back in time.

Then you also have the parallel that in norse mythology Loki causes Baldur's death. (The gods are throwing stuff at the invulnerable Baldur just for shits and giggles, and Loki gives the blind god Hödr a javelin of mistletoe and guides him to throw it at Baldur, killing him.)

Just to help you make sense of some of the reveals you saw: Kratos is part god, part mortal, so that would mean Atreus is that as well, mixed with the Giant from his ma's side. I think Atreus mentions it earlier in the game, but Giants can be, well, GIANT, or they can be human-sized, like Faye. Giants also have powers of foresight/prophecy, which it seems have passed to Atreus, along with his godhood. And while the trickster god Loki is very much an antagonist in Norse mythology, Sony Santa Monica is turning that all on its head, in a sense. In the official mythology, Odin, Thor, Baldur, etc, are all paragons of virtue and honor, but it's clear in the game that they're just selfish and cruel. With that rule applied, I like to think the Loki that Atreus becomes will reflect the teachings of his parents, and the example of Tyr, and oppose the Aesir--thereby becoming the "villain" of the Norse Pantheon, while in reality just opposing their rampant cruelty. That said, and I hate to say it, but that last panel in Jotunheim does reveal Kratos dying in Atreus' arms. :( Awesome play through, it was a pleasure to watch!

@@Valerik01 And yet they’re still there. Meaning that it’s simply a gameplay mechanic. Why would Atreus only mention that at the very end of the game? Because he’s not actually talking about the marking on the ledge he’s talking about the handprint and the mural shown earlier (like she was with us every step of the way) because she already knew everything that would happen before it happened. Let’s pretend the ledge markings were hers, that means she also would’ve been in the outskirts of Hel where no living person was ever able to be able to go besides the gate keeper that Kratos killed halfway through the story, so either she somehow found a way to travel to that side of Hel and make it back despite Mimir literally saying it’s impossible, or the game just retconned it’s own story in a matter of mere hours. Personally I don’t believe that the writing could be that bad so i’ll just keep believing the marks on ledges are a gameplay feature only and Atreus was talking about the handprint

@edgardtheknowledgekeeper31195 жыл бұрын
From the words of Cory Barlog, Atreus's path is the path of choicing to be "Atreus" or to be "Loki." To choose were his path will take him. I personally think if the time comes when he's "The God of Mischief" he'll be a god of mischief for your side, because he'll probably be rather antagonistic to the Aesir. Also just like to point out some really good foreshadowing for Atreus being Loki. Loki can shapeshift into animals in Norse Mythology. What did Atreus ask the first time he was told he was a god? "Can I turn into an animal?" Is that not fantastic foreshadowing. I'd also just like to talk about Baldur. I really love how you talking about him at the beginning, I completely agree with you. Baldur in mythology is suppose to be the Aesir god of light and joy yet in this game he represents someone left with despair. I've often thought if Freya had left his life to him he very well might have been what he was meant to be. I mean the Aesir are typically pricks in this world of Gow myth but Tyr was an Aesir so Baldur might have ended up like him. And I think it's important to look at the psychological reasons Baldur was such a cruel and resentful person. As someone who was never given choice for how his life turned out he would be resentful because he essentially was never given control over himself. As well being unable to feel anything or partake in any form of pleasure would detach you from other people. Just think about it. We bond with other people through simple and subtle interaction. Sharing a pleasant meal. Touching, holding hands, hugging, kissing, etc. He didn't have any of that for a hundred years. Now a lot of people argue "Oh for a god that's a drop in the bucket that's not long at all." Think about it though. A hundred years with no feeling, no pleasure. How much of our lives do we fill with pleasure and even just simple feeling and using our senses. We get bored, we pleasure seek. He had nothing. Think about how time passes so slowly when you're bored, when you're impatient. He was essentially trapped with nothing but his own minds resentment for a *hundred years.* No wonder he was so eager to kill her. But one thing I will say on the matter of killing Freya, don't for one second think he had lost the concept of love, because he did love his mother. Just look at his raw reaction when Freya offered herself to his hands. He was heartbroken and I truly believe that he didn't wish to kill her, but that his resentment and hatred prevented him from seeing it end any other way. And again think about it, if you spent that long in that state you would probably forget what feeling is even like. You would be desperate for anything. So it's no wonder he instantly became a masochist when he got his feeling, he would just want to experience as much feeling as he could even pain. Because pain is probably better than nothing at all after a hundred years. Not only that but the reason he would be so detached to hurting others like when he stabbed Atreus with his own knife, he doesn't feel he has no concept of pain at that point, so any form of empathy for another person's pain is gone, he's been turned into a Sociopath at this point, borderline Psychopathic. And even if you don't take empathizing pain into account the point of not being able to to connect with people with normal interactions like touching or eating together or anything else you can think of would also make him very detached from other people. Because even if your there to sympathize for him, you can't even comfort him because the warm hug your giving him is nothing, he can't feel it. Just something to think about. In a way Baldur's situation teaches us when we feel down we should appreciate what it is to be alive. Because he was basically just a living ghost for a hundred years. No feeling. Just being. So we can look at him and truly know how wonderful it is to feel.

Well, to be honest, regarding the Gods in this game, the 'Good' Gods are well, kinda evil, so Loki is probably going to be a Good God in this, since in normal Northern Mythology, things aren't exactly as they are in this game, some things are right, others are bit, turned around.
@prinstyrio05 жыл бұрын
Even in real Norse mythology, similar to Greek, who and what is "good" is rather subjective and in the end the God's are portrayed as only conveniently good to mortals when it suits them, bit of a fickle relationship, but since they're Gods mortals don't really get much of a say and can only hope they're in their favor. So going with this twist isn't too crazy as mortals (us) would've never truly understood who the Gods are to eachother. That said Loki isn't portrayed much as a saint himself, but you can always spin Ragnarok as a necessary evil which mortals can't truly comprehend.
@sgtanders5 жыл бұрын
@@prinstyrio0 Thats what I mean, in the traditional Northern Mythology, Loki is often depicted as the bad guy, cause of some of all the stuff he does. Another cool thing that you notice upon replaying the game, is how Atreus predicts certain hardships ahead. Since he is a Giant when he says “I have a bad feeling about this” he is quite literally predicting the future. Another thing for those who don’t know in Norse mythology, the world serpent is one of the children of Loki, earlier in the game “Jormi” said he recognized Atreus. Another side bit, when Atreus called “Jormi” in the last fight against Baldur, his eyes glowed like that of a Giant. Hints are riddled throughout the entire game, and I think it’s genius.

Remember how Mimir mentioned that Atreus seemed familiar to him? -was blood brothers with Odin -went on many adventures with Thor -his father was Farbauti, and was known for his great strength and terrible temper. Sound familiar? -comissioned the dwarves to create Mjolnir -fought Heimdall to the death at Ragnarok -his weapons of choice were twin daggers. Possibly setting him up to inherit the Blades of Chaos?

She literally walked everywhere you went before you. And if you remember the beginning of the game, Kratos and Boi talk about how there was a barrier around their house that mother made which is why no one ever found them. The barrier was held up by trees in the forest. Faye said that when she died, she wanted to be cremated using specific trees that she marked for Kratos to cut down. And since the barrier now is broken, Baldur can now see you, setting everything in motion.

But nah, she told him in no uncertain terms that she couldn't undo the magic. She even had the arrows in her hands, destroyed them, and still screamed "No!" when she saw the spell break. Clearly, she never actually repented. In the end, she was just trying to protect herself, never even apologized ONCE for her 'mistakes', and let her child suffer.

I absolutely adore this game and your playthrough was inspired. Well done. If you want to continue your God of War journey, I highly recommend reacting to some of the behind the scenes stuff on KZbin (“God of War Review reaction from director Cory Balrog” and “Raising Kratos”). The emotions are never over when it comes to God of War and these are two segments I really think you’ll enjoy. Congratulations again.

What happens to Loki? Well... He get's tied to a rock and has venom dripped into his eyes for around three years before launching an assault against Asgard with the Jötnar at Ragnarok and dying whilst killing Heimdall.

You know what's funny? since atreus is actually loki, that means Jormungander is actually ONE OF atreus' children. spoilers, one of the others is supposed to kill odin during ragnarok. have fun with that information to any and all who read this and didn't already know!

I would LOVE to watch you go through the first 3 games! They are much shorter than this latest GOW, clocking in at around 8 to 10 hours a piece, not 20+ like this one, so you shouldn't have much trouble knocking them out. But seeing you experience his entire story would be amazing to watch and I think you would seriously enjoy it!

Okay, so Fimbulwinter is a three year long harsh winter that starts when Loki kills Baldur and is a sign that Ragnarok is coming. I have a working theory about Kratos and how he effects everything. Kratos is a character that doesn't normally exist in Greek Mythology. In fact, his mere presence disrupts everything in the mythology that he comes across. My theory is that one of Kratos's god powers is to defy destiny or change it as we know it to be. Basically, things were supposed to happen like in the myths, but his existence and interactions with people change the myths. In Norse mythology, Laufey, or Faye in God of War, is Loki's mother but his father is a vague figure only briefly mentioned in rare accounts of the myths. His name is Fárbauti and literally means "cruel striker." A title you can easily apply to Kratos. So as for how he effects all of this... Assuming one of his powers is to defy destiny: Faye wanted to name her son Loki and Kratos opted for the name Atreus instead. That's butterfly effect number one. In mythology, Loki is the father of many of the animal giants, including Jormungandr. The Jormungandr we see was hit so hard by Thor's hammer that he was hurled into the past (likely during Ragnarok). That means that Baldur was killed way sooner than he was meant to. That is to say that unless Atreus gets busy and has some kids in the next 3 years, Ragnarok is coming way sooner than it was supposed to. Additionally, Atreus is showing no signs of becoming the trickster god we know in the lore, aside from his affinity with animals. Rather, he's a little Spartan soldier in the making. Things aren't how they're supposed to be and Kratos is the common factor. One additional change that I'm aware of: Originally, it's Odin that cuts off Mimir's head and carries it around for knowledge.
@briarrosegael20154 жыл бұрын
Syntherus Some nitpicks here, Kratos does exist in Greek Mythology, he’s just not like he is in the God of War series. Kratos represents power, and is a similar ilk of deity that Nike falls under. I’m also pretty sure Mimir’s head is cut off during the Aesir-Vanir War. Basically, as a sign of good faith they gave each other two prisoners, the vanir honoured the deal by giving two equally useful prisoners, but the ever so tricky Aesir, gave Mimir and a rather idiotic god(can’t remember his name). Eventually they found out the idiot god was being fed knowledge by Mimir and so they killed him in vengeance.

Little tidbit you may like to know, Faye is a shortening for Laufey (who was Loki’s mother in the actual mythology), and Loki’s father’s name was Farbauti which means “cruel striker” (not a bad nickname for Kratos). Although the game isn’t strictly loyal to the true mythology, there’s a lot of dots you can connect if you look into the mythology. That was half the fun for me after the game

Just putting it out there. Freya did not deserve forgiveness. She knew how to break her spell. There is no other explanation for her freaking out about the mistletoe-arrows. She knew that Baldur, more than anything, wanted to feel. And even in the end she denied him that choice. She never regretted what she did, she did only regret the effect it had on the relationship with her son. She never changed, she never accepted her sons wishes. She did not deserve forgiveness from him. PS. edit. always so disappointed when people do not notice that Kratos calls Atreus his "son" when they stand on top of the mountain, before they scatter the ashes. Everybody is always so distracted that they dont recognise it. And it is such a great indicator for Kratos' development. PPS. If the Aesir are bad, then Loki is ....?

I also felt bad for Baldur. An amazing character, and visually cool af. Another of my favorite sympathetic "villains" was Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda. He had a goal he sacrificed so much for, broke bones, bled and cried for, lost most of his young years to, all to be denied what his master/father pushed him so hard to be. Rejected and he felt betrayed. Then to see what he spent his lifetime to become be earned by a clumsy fool in a matter of weeks. Lol, oh well. Great play through! It was great seeing how it emotionally impacted you, thank you for sharing.

just shows how good this game is that it gave you valuable teachers in life as you say both a warning (Baldur) and an inspiration (Kratos). Also Loki was an adopted son of Odin and in norse mythology he's neutral as a god. Loki is also one of the causes of death of baldur with misletoe.

If you've brought this up in past videos then I apologize for not catching it, but will you consider going back to the older games? It is a great trilogy that really fortifies Kratos and his story. I know that you have read up on the story slightly in order to get a general concept of the plot, and for that I must thank you for going the extra mile. However, I do believe that playing the older games and venturing through the trials and tribulations that made Kratos the way he is would be fantastic for you the gamer, and "we" the audience. Thank you and have a fantastic day.
@redmilo925 жыл бұрын
I personally always took it that Freya was not only trying to protect Baldur but also was aware that his death leads to Ragnarok and therefore trying in her own way to avert it. But Norse mythology being cyclical, it's impossible to avert and your attempts to do so often hasten it.

Its so interesting to think about the ending and how Faye knew this was going to happen all along. She protected their family in the forest with magic, but set it up so that Kratos would chop down all the trees she marked after her death and break the spell, starting their adventure immediately. It looks like she’s basically initiating Ragnarök by starting the events of the prophecy, but how is ragnarök going to happen if all the giants except Jormy and Atreus are dead already? I’m excited to see where the story goes. Also, since hope was such a central idea in the previous games (mostly GoW3) its cute that Kratos named his son after someone that inspired hope in him before he literally absorbed hope into his body
@Thiago_Alves_Souza4 жыл бұрын
The thing is Kratos was wretched in his youth lol. So it makes sense for Atreus to be somewhat similar as to being a trickster who tries to win by any means necessary like his father in his youth.

Loki son of the giants, Farbauti and Laufaye, he then took his mother's name making him Loki Laufayson, and who becomes oath-brothers with Odin
@Thiago_Alves_Souza4 жыл бұрын
And Kratos fits the description. Basically aligning the original Norse myth with the character. He can turn into a giant since God of War 1 In Norse mythology, Loki's father is Fárbauti. That can be translated into "anger striker", "dangerous striker", or "cruel striker". He is also described as lightning in early nature myth. Kratos's father is the god of lightning. Kratos was a brutal SOB so it would make sense for the Giants to call him an aggressive or cruel striker in his beginnings in Midgard.

And I don’t know but baldur almost killed Atreus on a number of occasions doesn’t that count for something to freya, at the same time kratos was protecting his son what would’ve happened if he did kill freya and baldur lived. Who knows god of war 2 will have adult Loki as the protagonist with him going after freya cause she killed his dad makes sense.

If I remember correctly, some prophecy in Norse mythology was actually self-fulfilling. For example, when Fenrir was born (giant wolf, child of Loki), it was prophesied that he would kill Odin (I think), so they tricked him, chained him up, and locked him away. Because of his imprisonment, he grew resentful (duh) and feral, but once the time came (Ragnarok), he escaped his bonds and killed Odin. Anyway, not too sure on the details so maybe someone with more expertise can fill in the blanks and or provide a different perspective.
@gregnavarro70305 жыл бұрын
Sorry, didn't address the point of the comment. Seems to me like the whole Baldr thing was self-fulfilling as well so it was bound to happen by the behavior and impulses that Freya would have had. Again, please someone fill in the blanks if there's more to it.

Freya being the cause of her son's death is very ironic and well done. I can't wait for the sequel to this masterpiece (the director actually liked a tweet of mine, nearly shat my pants).

This is why I think he will earn the name as a trickster god. I believe Kratos will die in the sequel and his son joins the norse gods and gets adopted by them. And in the third game it'll be a now older loki systematically turning all the norse gods on each other and killing them one by one. Until thor is all that is left and he fights him. But not before he abandons the name loki and reclaims the name Atreus as he fights him as a Spartan and not a Norse god.

I had the exact same reaction as you when I finished the game. I just wanted more! I would highly recomend Neil Gaimen's book on the Norse mythos for more information on the setting and possible stories for the next game. The audiobook is even better since Gaimen narrates it himself.

I wonder what role Freya will play in the future games. She’s still cursed to remain in Midgard and cannot hurt any living thing, although I wonder if she’ll try to ally with Odin again to avenge their son’s death. I also wonder if her wrath is solely targeted towards Kratos, or if Atreus shares the blame, because I still can’t see her hurting Atreus even if she was physically able to. At the end of the day, while she had some exposition, she was still a pretty static character throughout the game, so I’m excited to see how she’ll develop in the future

Congratulations on finishing God of War I loved watching your playthrough. Now you must play the waiting game for God of War 5 for the PS5 like the rest of the God of War fans. Also Atreus is 50% giant from his mother Faye and 25% Greek god and 25% mortal from his father Kratos. Kratos' father was Zeus but his mother was a mortal. The giants do have the ability to see the future which is why Atreus had that vision with Thor arriving. Also you should really watch the documentary on the making of this game. It's called Raising Kratos and It's really good.
