Yez "making Ike look fast" is such a big compliment. Ike is friggin' slow and the only way to make him look fast is to have truly great fundamentals and really understand the character's movement. Really hoping Yez keeps it up! Also, super surprised he didn't get Taunt Bodied... maybe the Caster Curse reversed it?

@@shreshth22221 I think you have no idea what you’re talking about. This is a very commonly known bad matchup for Ness. Ness struggles against swords in general, the massive disjoint along with poor mobility make it heavily ike favored.

Tough Math-up for Ike. All those projectiles against his super gimpable recovery. Can't stay on the ground or you get pk fired, and can't attack from the air because ness lives in his shield, and can't compete with ness's maneuverability in air. Good job, Yez!

Both Yez and Scend (in their matchup charts) agree that this matchup is in favor of Ike. Ike's recovery is not so bad that you get gimped everytime. Quick Draw can actually get him out of nasty situations and disadvantage states in other matchups, especially when you mix it with air drift and mix-up the timing of your Quick Draw. Aether specifically is the weak part of his recovery. In other tournament sets, I've seen Yez drift-in and jump/air-dodge to the ledge just to avoid using Aether. (If someone really wants an example, I can go find a set to point to.) However, I'm not here to gaslight you; Ness' advantage state is the strong part of this matchup for him in juggling, comboing, and edgeguarding Ike. Staying on the ground to deal with projectiles (through Dash Blocking or even just walking and shielding on reaction) is how you deal with a character like Samus (since Samus is trying to bait you into jumping at specific times). Jumping over Grounded PK Fire is fine with appropriate caution, especially once we talk about Ike's aerials in a moment. If Ness tries to use Air PK Fire, it's not that hard to avoid since it only controls a very specific angle. PK Fire matters far more for edgeguarding and ledgetrapping since its an easy move for bullying Aether, which is almost all of the times we see it hit Yez in the 2nd game above. PK Fire is probably the specific reason Ness' advantage is the GOOD part of this matchup for him. Attacking from the air is fine. Almost all of Ike's Aerials (Reversed Up-Air, N-Air, and Back-Air) are safe on shield, especially since you can space yourself to use the full range of your sword. If a Ness player is blocking all the time, then that's actually good for you. Adding to this, Ike's air speed is actually faster than Ness' (1.134 vs. 1.007). Plus, Ike's disjointed sword attacks let him fight just outside ot Ness' range entirely. All three of these things give Ike the edge in Neutral. Ness' recovery is also quite gimpable with not much he can do to protect himself and avoid the situations where he gets gimped (compared to Lucas, for example, who can tether to the ledge instead of using PK Rocket). F-Air, Aether, and even a cheeky Eruption can all gimp Ness at the right times. Thus, since Ike has the edge in both Neutral and Advantage (but gets bullied in Disadvantage), people see this match as +1 in Ike favor

@@augustcross2305 I appreciate your detailed response. Very informative. I agree with your argument insomuch as a very skilled Ike should beat a skilled Ness. However, it's been my experience, having played both, that it's easier to be good with Ness than Ike, like I barely have to try with Ness, and it's difficult to get said spacing with Ike correct on the regular unless you are pretty much an expert with him. So expert Ike beats Ness, but novice Ness beats novice and intermediate Ike.

Ness's PK thunder stops almost all Ike recoveries, PK fire as we saw traps at ledge constantly, Fair constantly hits better in a trade off and combo starter, backthrow is an instant kill. Ike can only win if a player has complete control of his movements like Yez, so this was truly something to witness.
