Enjoy my transcription, music chart and performance of “Dexter's Tune”, from Randy Newman's original soundtrack - AWAKENINGS (1990). It is a very beautiful tune masterfully composed for the 'Last Dance' scene. Jazz icon and saxophonist, Dexter Gordon is featured in the film and he plays this tune sitting at a grand piano in the the hospital.

Leonard (Robert De Niro) visits Paula (Penelope Ann Miller) one last time. Octavio Bugni plays Dexter's tune, Originally composed and recorded by Randy Newman.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true story as related by neurologist Oliver Sacks, Awakenings stars Robin Williams as the Sacks counterpart, here named Dr. Malcolm Sayer. Something of a klutz and naif, Dr. Sayer takes a job at a Bronx psychiatric hospital in 1969. Here he's put in charge of several seemingly catatonic patients who, under Sayer's painstaking guidance, begin responding to certain stimulati. Apprised of the efficacy of a new drug called L-DOPA in treating degenerative-disease victims, Sayer is given permission to test the drug on one of his patients: Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who has not communicated with anyone since lapsing into catatonia as a child. Gradually, Lowe comes out of his shell, encouraging Sayers to administer L-DOPA to the other patients under his care. Julie Kavner and John Heard also star.

@@octaviobugni9291Today, so many associate the composer with Toy Story, not realizing he is capable of more serious tunes. I am in my late 30s and didn't realize until a few yrs ago, that Dexter's Tune was aimed at the pianist(in the movie) who died before the movie was released. He apparently was an accomplished artist in his own right.

@@vuls81 absolutelly. I’m quite sure the actor (pianist) is Dexter Gordon, one of the well known iconic american saxophone players. So the title of the song would be also an homage to this amazing, historic jazz cat : Dexter Gordon (Our Man in Paris is one of the few Albums I would recomend to hear from him). Artists speaking among themselves in a temporal dimension different from that of ordinary mortals ;-)
