**rawr** *XD* Ok writing that actually hurt my soul. Anyway, my list would be: -The Anthem by Good Charlotte -I'm Not Okay (I Promise) by MCR -Ohio Is For Lovers by Hawthorne Heights -If You Can't Hang by Sleeping With Sirens (literally the only SWS song I've ever liked) -Dirty Little Secret by All American Rejects -Ignorance by Paramore -Face Down by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Ok screw it I'm doing 10 -The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage by Panic! At The Disco -Thnks Fr Th Mmrs by Fall Out Boy -Heavydirtysoul by Twenty One Pilots (bc my emo phase was less than 2 years ago, so, you know) Before any genre nazis come for me, I'm aware that none of these songs are emo in terms of genre. Anyway, while I still love a lot of these bands and other bands like them and shop at Hot Topic on occasion (and cam you really blame me? it's the best place to buy band tees for the music I listen to), the actual emo phase (as in watching CrankThatFrank obsessively, getting triggered over G notes, and ending almost every sentence with XD) is over, thank God. That said, I regret nothing.

In all honesty, I see My Chemical Romance as more pop punk or alternative rock because they don't really have that distinct emo sound if that makes sense, nor did they ever really scream besides their first album (not saying that screaming makes a song emo) but if anything their first and second album were way more emo than The Black Parade. The Black Parade is just radio rock at this point.

For me my emo phase is just enjoying music that has a personal story behind it. If I'm being honest, the story behind a song can make or break it for me. Like Limousine, if I didn't know the story behind it, i might've never listened to it, but it's a great song and I love it.

If I want to relive that part of my life, my best bet to go in without feeling horrible about myself is to listen to Cork Tree, Fever, Full Collapse, or even Tell All Your Friends (and of course 3 Cheers or Black Parade). I got into better emo bands like Brand New, Sunny Day, or even Joyce Manor before I got really comfortable with the stuff that I don’t look back on fondly.

Songs that send me back to my emo phase (though tbh, never left it): 1. The entire MCR discography (the kings of emo) 2. FIATP, and FIATC (because missing the emo days is a feeling I always have) 3. Nirvana (for some reason it makes me so emo) 4. Pre-hiatus FOB (SOOOO GOOD) 5. Mr. Brightside (ever heard it? it's classic and legendary) 6. American Idiot album (yo, it was one of the pillars of emo) 7. 21st Century Breakdown (post-emo) 8. A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (emo classic) 9. Riot! (WHEN PARAMORE BROKE OUT MAINSTREAM EMO) 10. Numb (I'VE BECOME SO NUMB)

I feel like I'm the definite outlier when it comes to kids that went through their emo phase. I never really cared for bands like MCR, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, and others. I was more of a Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights, Funeral for a Friend, and From First to Last, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday kinda girl. I fell in love with the early-mid 2000's post-hardcore/emo music scene and I find that era to be some of the best these bands have ever put out. Hawthorne Heights themselves were one of the most prominent bands of my formative years. It's pure nostalgia when I listen to The Silence in Black and White, and they're still going to this day. They seem to have always been that underrated band no one really recognised. One thing I love about them is they have always been able to transcend pop rock and post hardcore, and to even blend the genres seamlessly. Even back in their days as A Day in the Life, they were pushing the boundaries. But while I love the popular version of emo, I still love the genuine nature of the original form of the genre, emotive hardcore. Bands like Rites of Spring on up to more recent bands like Dashboard Confessional are just so honest and pure. The raw emotion and energy of even more underground bands like Saetia and Pg. 99 are also captivating. I guess what I'm saying is emo is so diverse in its music, that it really is very special. If you don't like the whiny, more annoying side of emo, you have bands like Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music and Fugazi that stick much closer to their punk rock roots and sensibilities. The genre in and of itself is always going to be something close to my heart. As a teen, I struggled a lot, wanting to be accepted, trying to find myself, and all that shit. As an adult, I'm almost out of college. I'm fairly more confident than I was. I'm not totally angsty. I still have moments where my depression gets to me, though, and in those moments, emo has still been a pretty big comfort. Don't get me wrong, I hate the kids in the scene. I hate where it has gone. I hate that it's not really about the music. I hate the stigmas and negative connotations that comes along with it. But at the same time, I love it all. I love seeing how emo has evolved and changed to fit and mean all sorts of different things over time. I love how bands like Thursday have shied away from the term. I love how Hawthorne Heights owns up to it and even makes a bit of a joke about it. At the end of the day, the music is at the heart of it, and with it being so varied, it's so hard to just not appreciate the full scope it all -- for me, at least.
