I've watched this movie so many times and only just understood why he doesn't kill himself. It's not because Charlie made any compelling case, it's that Slade did everything he could to test Charlie's courage, to prove that everyone was a coward in the end, but Charlie was unbreakable. He threatened to shoot himself and Charlie actually stopped him, which obviously surprises Slade. Then he even pretends he's going to shoot Charlie, but Charlie does not leave. By the end, he realizes that courage is still a real thing that can exist in people to a depth he thought gone. If Charlie could do it, surely he could too.

I don't think we give enough credit to Chris O'Donnell in this film -- particularly in this scene. He went toe to toe with one of the greatest actors of all time, which would be a daunting task for any young actor, and more than held his own. It's a pity the rest of his career didn't reach those same heights.
@OreadNYC Жыл бұрын
Granted, "Batman And Robin" and "Batman Forever" probably did a number on his career to some extent...but based on an article I remember reading many years ago, it was my impression that O'Donnell walked away from Hollywood for a while rather than the other way around. He's been married to the same woman since 1997, which should tell you something about him.

It's a shame that we don't have enough films like this around anymore. This generation gets remakes, re-boots, sequels, and super hero movie after super hero movie. THIS is an absolute classic. Aaron Simpson The performance and film.....amazing! Direction, screenplay, etc. Pacino was nominated for an Oscar, too many times to count. "Academy Awards" mean nothing to me. However, he and this film are just one of too many others to mention that are equally as powerful. I could list at least another 50 "gushers" as you say. There is indeed a difference between fine film, and just another "movie." Yes. This is a classic.Look up Dustin Hoffman's speech at the Oscars when he accepted the AC Award for Kramer vs. Kramer....circa 1977 (?) It says it all.

The nice thing about what is to come is it shows that Charles was right when he essentially told Col. Slade that he had a future.

Pacino was pure thunder in this movie, but can we take a minute to acknowledge Chris O’Donnell? Such an underrated performance.

I love this scene. His darkness was totally interior, meaning by this that was not provoked by anyone or anything exterior at all, that was just himself with no help of anyone at all, that took him there. Yep, fair enough to go on with his life.

Exactly. His blindness actually allowed him to "see".

This is one of the finest pieces of acting, 'Im in the dark' sounds genuinely distressed. Obviously thats the point of acting however this makes you forget Al Pacino is just acting. Truly brilliant,

Courtroom speech be damned, THIS is best scene in the movie. I can't decide which character breaks my heart more here, Pacino's or O'Donnell's, and THAT is how good the often-disregarded Chris O'Donnell is.
