Awesome talk. Thank you for sharing this, I really loved it. My only comment is that, The moderator could be way better.

Pleasantly interesting video! I was not impressed with Juju Chang's skills though. Her line of questioning and comments were frivolous.

I agree. These researchers seem uncomfortable as is and she obviously compounds the problem by taunting them and calling them "disgusting" several times in a row.
@k.60727 жыл бұрын
Well, I can sort of see why you would say that, but I think she actually did a great job by keeping it light. Rather than be serious. The questions and comments helped to tie in everyone's side. This subject could have easily became non intriguing, This panel remained mature about the subject; but it was easy to see that it could have gone left.

I wish they had chosen a moderator with an actual science or even perfume background; somebody like Chandler Burr. It would have made this presentation much more meaty.

Hmmm, I firmly believe that Mrs Chang gave the discussion emotional momentum and a particular zest - as a matter of fact , her style kept it playful and intriguing at the same time. At least from my perception.

It is the human brain itself generating the smell only using the protein combination; because of the audible range of frequency receptive for molecular vibration with our brains and it is dependent on the level of evolution that happened to register information to collect a sense about the surroundings as part of one of the senses for collective processing. It is just complex in molecular structure only but, the mechanics are plain and simple every time. It's like knowing the Earth's evolution time but, finding the same stuffs after a point of time. It is a biomechanical residual adaptation over Earth's human time or for other living beings having the same flora and fauna as humans over time to break and divide things through the sense of smell only.

Good discussion, but the adjudicator ruined it for me a bit. She kept interjecting nonsense into the conversation and kept making subtly judgey remarks like "My 3 year old would say that is digusting" Not impressed with her.

The simpler explanation to the 400 circles of smell is basically this, the end combination of possibilities in the range of smell seems to be much greater than that of sight of color, if 3 receptors of sight (red, blue, green) can produce 10 million shades of color, 400 receptors of smell could range in the trillions if not greater. Oh yeah and completely off topic I believe it’s Cal Tech has a camera that can shoot at 10 billion frames per second, oh wait check that it’s 10 trillion frames per second, my bad.

In regards to "plants sending out signals about being attacked and by whom"... how do we know this is not reverse causality? How do we know it isn't the case that the wasps have very good senses of smell and simply can smell the saliva or something else of the caterpillars to find them? Where did the notion of plants sending this signal come from?

Thank you for the video. I have a thing I wanna say about human pheromone. When they talked about human pheromone, they talked about body smell like sweat but I think the pheromone comes from one's nose, nose breath. I wish they talked about secret of smell that comes from nose breath. Anyone have thoughts or knows research on this?
@crocellll7 жыл бұрын
Like mucus or phlegm? Or just the smell of your nose at a molecular level? If it's at a molecular level then no, even if it did have a smell, the brain wouldn't perceive it's odor as it is not related to any particular emotion or memory.

Emrah Kurtic maybe your receptors in your nose are better than the average person? Who knows, since we can't really count your receptors individually, but are you usually picking up smells that others don't seem to perceive? If so then maybe this might be the case? Good luck.

You’re sensitive to strong odors, my mom has this issue as well, couldn’t spray cologne or use my designer markers in the house had to draw in the basement, some people are just more sensitive than others with certain things. She would get migraines from the smell, it a terrible thing to have to deal with, research the Internet, there’s a answer for everything.

What a great panel discussion. Thank you so much for posting this. I disagree with the comments regarding Chang’s moderation. I thought she was perfect. She’s not meant to be an expert in this field, that’s why she’s not a guest on the panel. She was engaging and curious. While I understand the negative response to her first comment about Avery, I think it’s more telling about our notions on Avery than about hers. I think she was trying to be cute and earnestly calling him attractive. We assume she was being sarcastic, but a quick glance at her husband, and it’s not at all far fetched to believe she was being sincere and playful. Anyway, great video. Thank you!

If women are better at identifying scents, why are almost all master perfumers men? Sexism anyone?
@boblotoldo3051 Жыл бұрын
Ffs. Simply because men are much more driven to succeed and are simply and plainly more inspired than women. Why ? Because women, whether you want to accept it or not, are cradled and birthed in love and affection and are loved and receivers of attention (wanted or unwanted) throughout their entire lives. Men, on the other hand, have to strive and work to get a small ounce of recognition and admiration. That's why men are the best poets, the best writers, painters, musicians, artists... it's because the lack of love, recognition and affection drives them to it all. And most importantly, and this is what women will never understand, it's that women inspire men whereas men rarely inspire women apart from when it comes to insulting us obviously, when it comes to that women are completely inspired.
