Learn all of the materials involved in sketching and drawing and also some basic shading techniques and sketching concepts.
In this video, I start off going through all of the materials you're going to need for learning to sketch and draw. Once you have a better understanding of those, you can start drawing simple shapes and lines and practicing sketching with an HB, B, or 2B pencil. These are good pencils for sketching lightly but also allow you to go a little darker when needed for shading. I plan to cover perspective, values, edges, shading techniques, proportions, landscapes and many other topics of sketching and drawing for beginners and intermediate artists.

Been eyeing some "drawing books for beginners". They start right by telling you to start with just basic shapes, some light and bam! Third lesson is "add details", where you're supposed to go from some squares and circles to a wet Tiger with detailed fur, like wtf

The whole perfectionist mentality is what was holding me back for sure. Once I got it into my head that nothing is perfect, and that my sketches and drawings evolve over the course of creating them, I found I became a lot more able to create things from my mind onto the paper. Thanks for the guide, I owe you a beer!

Absolutely brilliant. That one piece of advice ‘don’t commit’ has transformed my thinking. I’m 55 and have always thought I couldn’t draw because my art teacher at school said so. I just drew a circle with shading and shadow and it’s made me so happy! Will definitely be drawing everything in my house and looking forward to the next in the series.

After several years of leaving my passion for drawing, here I am, an 18-year-old who's trying to restore his passion. It's so hard for me to go back to drawing after I have been rejected when I was in 6th grade. I was so easily discouraged. Yes, I still know how to draw but there's a feeling inside me that I was left behind. I want to start over again and learn the basics, yet it really is hard to start something. Planning to finish this whole series, watching your other vids about color and stuffs and hoping I could bring back my passion for drawing :) Btw, this tutorial vids are cool. Very beginner friendly

I want to be able to sketch concepts to illustrate ideas and metaphors. I watched your first video and was amazed that I could sketch a pretty nice sphere! Whenever I asked other artists how do I get better at drawing, one of the worst pieces of advice I've been given was "Just draw/just practice" Well, I've been "just drawing" for about ten years and I'm still at an amateur level. What I meant was HOW do you practice? What techniques do you incorporate? What are the steps? To me, it's just a condescending way of saying "Figure it out on your own."
@SchaeferArt
@SchaeferArt 5 жыл бұрын
Read drawing books, go to the library if possible. No need to even buy books. Read them, draw everything in them. Draw your surroundings. Learn to render form and light through shading - put the techniques in said books to use. Start from simple objects and build to complex. If you did anything else for 10 years, do you think you'd improve? It seems you should start evaluating what you're doing and try different things to solve the problem. Find ways to solve the problem. The internet is an amazing resource for books, videos, articles and all kinds of things on drawing. I'm sure you can use this to your advantage. I hope it goes well and you find what you're looking for. To be honest, this is my method, I did all of these things I mentioned above including drawing from life and my surroundings.

There is not a clear way at all. That's why they say "just practice". You need to find what you suck at first. It may be perspective, values or rendering. Read about the topic that's the most hard for you and just practice that, NOTHING ELSE. Then when you're decent at that fundamental, switch it up for another. The fundamentals of drawing are like a wheel, you keep rotating them and going back to them.

I never understood what the point of sketching was, I thought It just looked messy so I always fully committed. I really wanted to draw but because of my hard commits it always looked trashy so I never could make an habit. Now at 21 years old you just explained _why_ people sketch. Not to make random lines but *'to find the right line within the lines'* and the with vs without sketch, for the first time I tried the damn thing and I've just drawn a perfect circle for the first time in my life and it feels amazing.. I feel so ashamed. You have my thanks dude!

"Don't be commited" is the best piece of advice I've ever heard. Wnen I wanted to learn to draw a year ago or so, I watched some russian tutorial (I'm from Ukraine), and the first thing they said that needs to be learned is to draw a decent circle. The way they presented it was so that you must commit it. I drew few dozens of circles, could not feel the improvement and gave up on that. Now you say to do the very opposite thing, and I drav a decent circle on my first attempt. The first thing I needed to learn was to scetch stuff, not to make commited lines. This is incredible. Thank you for making this masterpiece.

My notes: 1. Don't be committed... draw multiple lines and darken the most appropriate shape. 2. Its not gonna be perfect when you draw it the first time... so do not commit. 3.Find the light source and how many light sources , where is light coming from... that will help you make the sketch 3D.... making shadows. 4.make the arrow from light source. 5.Get rid of the perfectionist mentality and get into training mode.

I've always used different forms of art as an expression of myself my whole life. A couple years ago, after several medical problems, I had a stroke. I was only 48. I've been terrified to begin again for fear of what I might not remember. This online tutorial was amazingly effective at getting me back to holding my tools. Also, assuming I know nothing, I don't have to feel stupid if I can't remember something I learned in freshman art. Thank you for a place to begin again.

This is great! I’m in an drawing class for school right now and it baffles me that they didn’t even teach the “don’t commit” technique before getting into shadows and shading. Just that one piece of advice could have saved me a lot of time 😅 Thanks!

ItachiShakur_ Made some progress here and there. I've been working on the basics for the longest time, mostly drawing from the shoulder, and getting down basic shapes. Not gonna lie, I've been hoping off and on over the 11 months since I posted this. If I'd done to working every day I'd be MUCH farther along.

I suggest learning to draw lines and curves and at lest one or two sketches daily. When I practice, I try to do at least 2 hours of practice and I'm proud to say that I've been able to do that pretty well. And if there's anything I can say that I've been able to actually pick up, its having fun drawing for the first time with what I try to sketch. Before I'd just get upset but now I can smile and laugh as I learn. So yeah. Sketches,line practice and maybe pick up some pins as well, And I recommend going to drawabox.com. That's where I've been going for a while now.
