After having this new version for several months, I will say I like the old version better. The new ones are definitely quiet, however, just wearing my guitar eventually loosens the set screw and the ring no longer stays tight. It is also quite difficult to pull the pin out to remove your strap and they really don't snap on as easy as you'd think. The old version has never loosened up in years and I can take on and off with ease.

Love these locks except for one major issue. Not letting us use our guitars existing screws was just plain dumb. Now I have to drill into my guitar to make the slock screw fit. If I ever decide to sell my guitar the old screw won't fit anymore.

What kind of guitar do you have where they didn't fit?
@BTStudioGE
@BTStudioGE 2 жыл бұрын
The screws are self-tapping, that means that you just fit them on the smaller hole and screw them in. As for restoring the original buttons, you just need a toothpick and some glue. Put some glue on the toothpick and fit it in the hole until it reaches the bottom. Break it and jam in the other half. Wait a little bit and voila, you can now screw back your older strap buttons and this solution will be secure.

Yeah this is just plain dumb, just damaged the paint after screwing in the slocks. Please note that I did use the recommended size, however, the thread pitch is different than the factory screws so the slocks had to tap new threads into the body. Utterly useless "improvement to the old slocks, thanks schaller.

I've been using Schaller strap locks since the mid 80's. Never had a problem. Not once. I just bought two sets of these new S-Locks and found the allen head button to be a sloppy fit for a 3mm allen key. I'm using a quality Allen brand key and I've used this same key on my Floyd Rose equipped guitars with no issues. The problem is 3 out of 4 of the buttons stripped while slowly installing them. Each time the key was fully engaged and I was using very little force to turn the buttons in. In the video it says they are made of hardened steel. I find that hard to believe. The buttons stripped with very little turning force. At least the new locks work with the old buttons but I won't be purchasing these new S-Locks anymore...

Schaller`s S-Locks are compatible with the old Security Locks. Please keep in mind, that the silent feature is only available with the new buttons. The locking bolt is slanted/angled and secure against rotation! The buttons have a 4mm screw with self-tapping wood thread to cover also most of worn out holes.
@scottmarshall3185
@scottmarshall3185 6 жыл бұрын
"S" Locks are definitely NOT compatible with Originals.. The lock pin in the originals is a tiny bit larger than the hole in the "S" buttons. The pin DOES NOT completely engage. It does, however, engage slightly, making you think that it is secure, but it is not. The pull pin stays in the out position and does not pop into the smaller "S" button hole. I found that out the hard way trying to come up with a solution to the "no swivel" issue. You guys need to go back to the drawing board on these. The so called "silent feature" is a complete failure. The parts snap together so tight, they won't swivel. This causes your strap to spin between the parts, tearing up your strap hole. Since you can't use a wrench on these, you can't get the ring tight enough to prevent the strap from spinning against the friction of the frozen "S"locks. I even tried Nut Sauce with no improvement. These things DO NOT MOVE. I tried 2 different sets of "S" locks. I sent them both back. Originals get my vote. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
@lanthaniated1
@lanthaniated1 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Schaller your new S-locks look real classy which is why I purchased them, but the new silent feature means the angled locking pin digs in and grinds metal when I pull my strap round. I correctly fitted the new Ruthenium Chrome S-locks to my Stat but took them off looking for a solution.

I used to love and be obsessed with the Dunlop Straploks for years but after a brand-new set failed and drop my guitar straight to the ground I'm never buying them again. Yeah, I know it might have been a faulty unit in like 10,000 that left the factory, but I don't care. If I pay for a product that is intended to lock my strap in place and I trust my very expensive/favorite guitars with it, I expect it to do its job and do it well, so failing one time only is really all I need. Anyway, my cat-like reflexes were, fortunately, quick enough for me to catch the neck of my favorite guitar right on time and avoid the tragedy about 3 inches from the floor, but I feel for those who may not get so lucky. So, since that incident happened my advice for all my fellow guitarists has been to ditch those Dunlop abominations out of your beloved guitars, and instead switch to these babies right here, Schaller S-Locks, because the mechanism on these is designed in such a way that even in the remote possibility that they fail to lock the strap (something already pretty much impossible to happen because it is spring-locked tightly and strongly) it will still secure your guitar in place because of the way the lock connects to the guitar from below. You would only notice that it "failed" if/when you took off the strap yourself, basically. So, what this means is that with this straplock, your guitar is literally always secure and protected from a disaster, I mean even gravity itself is on your side and helping. A disaster just can't happen even if you wanted to and so it's absolutely perfect. Sorry for the rant, but friends don't let friends buy Dunlop Straploks. Stay safe and Rock On \m/

I am using my old strap-lock on them because the new one has too narrow of a channel. With repetitive movements of the strap, the Schaller part that is attached to the strap actually began to "unscrew" the part that is screwed into the guitar. Same problem with multiple sets. Switch back to my old, non-s-lock style and the screws stay firmly in the guitar.
@sazstuff6547
@sazstuff6547 2 жыл бұрын
I had exactly the same problem!! I sanded down the edges, so the movements works more freely and I put a drop of hobby glue on the felt part. No more unscrewing. The channel itself was not too narrow on my set, just that the edges got stuck to each other on the pin and U. But I admit that this is quite a lot of extra work for a pricy product :| (I still love them)

Looks quite fine. I'll have them in my shop by friday. Only disadvantage imho: With the "old" button I could use a 45mm screw to fix it, if the hole was worn out (especially if you got a guitar made of e.g. basswood), with the new one-piece-buttons I shall always have got to glue in a piece of hardwood...

Have had mine for 4 years now. They MUST be greased more than once. Lubricated mine a little too late. The metal was eaten up by the movements and now I have to buy new ones. They also unscrew the screw that goes into the guitar because the lock is part of the screw and without lubrication / grease it starts to unscrew from the movements. Mine are now completely eaten up and it's just luck that I didn't drop the guitar and see how eaten up the holder was. I could flip the mount off with a little movement just..FYI only

Won't replace my current Schallers with these ones, not really worth the upgrade, but might try them out for my next guitars. I'm not too sure about the one-piece strap buttons though, I am under the impression that it would make them get unscrewed more easily as you move and the strap rotate on the strap button... But larger threads screws are a welcome improvement for sure, probably the most annoying thing about the classic model, often needed to fill the hole with a wood stick and wood glue to make sure the screw won't come off because it was often too thin...

My biggest gripe with this "compatible with old locks" spiel is that they only sell the buttons, but not the new top sections with the wheels. So, if I want to upgrade all of my existing Schaller strap locks, i have to spend more money on the full package, which includes the strap buttons that I already have and don't need. Sigh.

I know strap buttons vary from guitar to guitar, but the variance can't be that huge, otherwise they wouldn't fit the holes on a guitar strap. Likewise, the holes in a guitar strap can only vary a certain amount otherwise they wouldn't fit the strap buttons for most guitars. I don't understand why pretty much every locking system requires the installation of special strap buttons rather than designing the lock to work with a guitar's existing strap buttons. Surely a "one size fits most" lock wouldn't be too difficult to design. I doubt it's beyond human ingenuity to design one that's adjustable. An alternative would be different locks for common strap buttons sizes (Fender, Gibson, PRS etc). That way people don't have to worry about altering their guitar because the screws for the buttons included with a particular locking system aren't the same size as the original screws. I realise that a more general approach may not have the benefit of being silent like the S-Locks. For people that prioritise having silent strap locks, the S-Locks are a good solution. But for people that don't wish to alter their guitar, the majority of locking systems have the potential to be problematic if the screw size doesn't match their existing strap button screws.

I think the Schaller locks are wonderful but there is a problem putting them on an acoustic guitar, (the bottom pin). If your guitar doesn't have an electric barrel end jack, there is no way the bottom pin of the Schaller can work. The end pin on my Martin is a plastic pull out pin and the hole is to big to put the Schaller pin in, not to mention that the screw on the pin wont reach the end bracing block on the guitar, other than plugging the hole or install a barrel electric end pin jack that accepts the 1/4 in plug. The heel pin works fine but your in a pickle when it comes to the bottom pin. I've already bought the Schaller lock strap kit but will have to wait till I have a pickup installed that will give me the 1/4 end pin to use with the strap locks. But then there is another problem. And acoustic electric end pin wont work with the Schaller's unless you use a MusicNomad Strap Loc-Adapter because the bottom Schaller strap will cover up the the 1/4 hole need to plug the guitar in. Not to cut down Schaller's, but there should have been more research done to accommodate acoustic guitar owners who don't want a plug in 1/4 end pin which requires a 1/2 inch drilled hole all the way through the bottom bracing block to accept the barrel end plug. On a high end guitar, say a $5,000 Martin its a choice not to many are willing to make and therefore cant use the Schaller's strap lock system.

I've been using old shaller locks for over 10 years, had installed the buttons on two of my guitars. I just got a new guitar, and while looking for the buttons, I thought I'll give this new version a try. Putting the button and the screw into one piece is really a bad design choice. It might save some cost on productions, but for the customers, it limits the usage. The screws were larger than what I had for my guitar. (Larger and longer threads). This will crack your finish bad if you don't drill before putting them on! They really should have allowed users to choose already existing screws if needed. This is really a dumb choice IMO. Also, the one of the locks pull is very sticky and it's really hard to unlock. I think this is poor quality control. Maybe it will loosen up overtime, but it is really rigid and hard to unlock right now. I do give some credit for its rattle free design as they advertised. But overall I am very disappointed. I trusted the Shaller name, and went for it despite there are many other cheaper third party parts out there. Now I think maybe I should have gone for that with out paying premium for their name. I'd adivse anyone who's looking to get this one just to go older style locks, or at lease older style buttons.

I have done alot of research on your product & everything is A+ apart from(talking about myself here) the fact that it seems that i would still have to do either some drilling or 'filling' in of the button holes on my guitar in order to use these. I have a MIM standard strat (2017) and im wondering if i would be able to simply remove my buttons & then screw in the schaller ones WITHOUT any sort of extra fidgeting around with the og strat holes?

"The strap buttons fit all existing strap button holes, including those of Gibson's". I'm looking to install my nice new gold Schallers on my ESP LTD EC-1000, but the Schaller screws have a different threading than the original ones on the guitar. If I install the Schaller screws, I assume it would alter/damage the holes in the guitar? Will it strip the wood since the Schallers are different/thicker?
@JameseyFrey
@JameseyFrey 3 жыл бұрын
It won't strip the hole, but if you want to reinstall the original and find that it is too loose, you can use a toothpick to make the hole more snug again

Please always check the thickness of the body wood first. This will determine the required length of the S-Locks. You can find more information with mounting instructions and a technical drawing of Schaller S-Locks in the product description of our webshop: schaller.info/en/s-locks/276/s-locks-m?c=18

Dumb question... Do i need a particular strap for that? Seems these pins are quite thick for the holes of any of my straps, so i cant tighten these round screws down all the way since there is like a bulk of leather round the Pins. If that makes sense. Seems pretty tight but still dont know if that is how its supposed to be. Thanks for the advice.

You did it. You stopped me from abandoning Schaller locks. I toured the world with the old ones. If I ever forgot to tighten my hex nut and put some clear nail-polish on it, it came lose... the parts fell on the stage... and I was on my hands and knees collecting them up. So I got really good at keeping them tight. But when the tour was over, if it was too long before the next one, I lost the habit and lost the parts again. I have a drawer with a bunch of buttons with no mates. When I am home, I go back to rubber washers because I am not traversing a stage and acting crazy. Mostly sitting in a studio. I am thinking of saying "yes" to a tour offer this fall.. What kind of locks? Not the old ones. Now you show me this. I think you got me back. But. 1. The longer pull button looks like NIPPLES on an ATOMIC BOOB MODEL... not necessarily a bad thing but you could put an eye out with that. 2. When a German guy says "S-Lock" it sounds like "arschloch" - which is hilarious and great. But I don't want strangers to realize that I am in fact a TOTAL ARSCHLOCH! (but not the kind that flips his custom shop guitar over his shoulder as if the audience gives a shit... that kind of arschloch is unforgivable) S-lock... I might just tell my fans that the new nipples on my guitar(s) are "Schaller Prophylactics"

"S" locks are definitely NOT compatible with Originals. Since you can't use a wrench on these, you can't get the ring tight enough to prevent the strap from spinning against the friction of the frozen "S" locks. I even tried Nut Sauce with no improvement. These things DO NOT MOVE. I tried 2 different sets of "S" locks. I sent them both back. The Originals get my vote. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

I just checked the new S-Lock bolts with the old Security buttons on several of my guitars. I found the new bolt fully engages the old button. The old button has a larger opening 6.8mm vs 6mm on the new button. The new button does not allow rotation. The old button allows rotation so the regular noise associated with the old locks is there... The problem I have is the new buttons are made of soft metal and strip easily even with a quality 3mm Allen key.

@@RalphMercuroMusic the older lock will not engage in the new strap button. The older lock doesn’t have a 45 degree notch in the pin like the new one. I tested this because I already had the old locks on my strap with locktight and didn’t like how the new ones were longer. Now the new lock that is longer fits in the old button no problem but is noisy still. The problem with new ones is that they are so tight the horse shoe doesn’t want to freely turn around the button as much and it can get hung up at times, I’m sure lube would help but the screw being attached to the button could possibly loosen if it gets hung up. The upgrade to the new design was not worth it for me. They stick out farther, have a screw attached with a socket head instead of Phillips, and still have as much noise as dunlops.

Quality Control not the best. One of the hex nut openings on my S-Locks was too tight -- extremely difficult to install. The 3mm hex wrench would hardly go into one of the hex nuts. Don't reinvent the wheel; Phillips screws have worked fine for decades.
