Schellackpolitur (English text see below)
Schellackpolitur ist die Königin der Polituren. Sie bringt wie keine andere Politur die Transparenz und die Leuchtkraft von Holz zur Geltung.
Mit Hilfe eines Ballens aus einem Leinentuch und einer inneren Füllung aus Wolle oder Baumwolle wird der in Alkohol gelöste Schellack schichtweise aufgetragen. Der Alkohol verdunstet und hinterlässt den Schellack auf dem Holz. Dies erzeugt möglicherweise das schönste Finish für Möbel.
Schellackmischung:
1 Kilogramm Schellack Flocken & 4 Liter Ethanol mischen. Dies ergibt ein Mischungsverhältnis von 1 : 3, da 4 Liter Ethanol nur 3 Kilogramm schwer ist.
Ethanol ist besser als Isopropanol. Es löst sich besser auf. Die Mischung muss immer wieder gedreht werden, damit sich die Flocken auflösen. Es braucht etwa 1 bis 2 Wochen. Es hängt von der Dicke der Schellackflakes ab.
Die 1: 3 Mischung ist eine Stammlösung. Es ist nicht die Mischung, die man für eine Politur braucht.
Diese Stammlösung wird nochmals verdünnt mit Isopropanol. Isopropanol ist ein Erdölprodukt. Ethanol hingegen ist das Resultat eines Gährungsprozesses. Isopropanol ist weniger aggressiv, wodurch die Gefahr geringer ist, untere Schellackschichten abzureiben.
1 : 6 für Porenfüllung:
Beim ersten Arbeitsgang werden die Holzporen gefüllt. Offenporige Hölzer wie Mahagoni oder Walnuss besitzen grosse Poren und werden mit Bimsmehl gefüllt.
Für das ebonisierte Holz des Napoleon III-Kabinetts habe ich eine Mischung aus Kohle und gemahlenem Vulkangestein verwendet.
1:3 für die Deckpolitur
Die Stammlösung (1:3) kann man mit Schleifstaub vermischen, wodurch ein wunderbarer Kitt entsteht, den man sehr gut für Holzoberflächen benutzen kann. Damit der Farbton stimmt, kann man in diesen Kitt auch Farbpigmente einsträuen.
Oder man schmilzt Blätterschellack zu Nuggets, die man mit Naturpigmenten unterschiedlich einfärbt. Die Schellacknuggets werden mit einem Schmelzgerät angelöst und in die schadhaften Stellen eingedrückt (vgl. • Wie stellt man farbige... .
Zum Streichen von Möbeln nimmt man die Mischung 1:6 (Porenfüllmischung). Früher wurde der Innenbereich von Küchenmöbeln mit Schellack ausgepinselt, da Schellack Gerüche bindet.

French Polishing is the name given to the process of coating wood with a solution of shellac dissolved in alcohol, using a “rubber” made of rag and cotton wool instead of a brush. The alcohol evaporates, leaving the shellac deposited upon the wood. It produces what is possibly the finest looking finish for furniture.
Shellac Mixture:
Mix 1 kilogram of shellac flakes with 4 liters of ethanol. This results in a mixing ratio of 1:3 since 4 liters of ethanol weigh only 3 kilograms.
Ethanol is better than isopropanol. It dissolves better. The mixture needs to be continuously stirred to dissolve the flakes. It takes about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the thickness of the shellac flakes.
The 1:3 mixture is a stock solution. It is not the mixture needed for polishing.
This stock solution is further diluted with isopropanol. Isopropanol is a petroleum product, whereas ethanol is the result of a fermentation process. Isopropanol is less aggressive, reducing the risk of abrading lower layers of shellac.
1:6 for pore filling:
During the first step, the wood pores are filled. Open-pored woods like mahogany or walnut have large pores and are filled with pumice powder. For the ebonized wood of the Napoleon III cabinet, I used a mixture of charcoal and ground volcanic rock.
1:3 for bodying.
The stock solution (1:3) can be mixed with sanding dust, creating a wonderful filler that works well for wood surfaces.

For furniture brushing, use the 1:6 mixture (pore filling mixture). In the past, the interior of kitchen furniture was brushed with shellac, as it absorbs odors.
