SHIPS OF THE VOC
In the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company had the largest fleet the world had ever seen. This period is called the Golden Age in the Netherlands. For his solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 1992, the maritime Frisian painter Peter Sterkenburg made a large painting depicting VOC ships on the IJ. The painting received a lot of appreciation and special commissions soon followed for similar paintings.

This is not correct. The Dutch merchant fleet was much bigger and only a small part was state controlled through the VOC and WIC. English estimates of that time go up over 20.000 Dutch merchant ships. It was bigger than the merchant fleet of Britain, Spain, Portugal and France combined and the Dutch shipped more than half of Europe's goods. Not from East-Indies of course, these ships had higher value cargo per ship and their journey was much more expensive, but by far most money was made with bulk shipping in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and later the Mediterranean. The VOC only had 140 merchant ships at it's peak, and most of the trade it did was within Asia. The VOC had little bearing on the Golden Age besides culturally, by the time the VOC started finally paying dividend, 1631, the Dutch Golden Age was already halfway through. It's the windpowered sawmill from the late 1500's, the invention of modern capitalism and the social mobility that made the Dutch Republic incredibly rich, not nutmeg and pepper. Wheat, beer, whine, wood, cloth was what Europeans consumed a lot more of and it was more often than not shipped by the Dutch.

I dont know the statistics but you are right on the source of wealth. It was mosly made from the trade in wood and wheat from the baltic sea
