First heard Simple Symphony's "Boisterous Bourrree" (0:00) & "Sentimental Sarabande" (6:32) in a 1986 French film named Mauvais Sang starring Juliette Binoche & Dennis Lavant.

My father, Gilbert Amelio, chose to use much of this symphony for the background music for his “Face of Christ” shown every Good Friday around the world by the 700 Club. He performed the Face of Christ around the world for over 40 years. I remember at the age of 8 helping my father carry the huge bust of clay up the stairs in our house in Warren, Michigan, and into our green Chevy wagon then driving to convents and churches where my father would perform for an hour. Then we would drive the long trip home at night. Looking back today and being blessed to hear this symphony again is so peaceful. Thank you Benjamin Britten for the memories.

This simple symphony is made of youth themes, re-worked by an experimented miusician to build up a neoclassic work. Prokofiev did the same with his second sonata and its famous "classical" first symphony. This is quite successful since the art of the confirmed comoser puts these elements in interesting order.

yes, i completely agree with the strongly british theme. Some of Britten's work reminds me of Vaughan William's, the same sort of complex, layered harmonies, but in my opinion Britten is much more melodic and pioneering.

Fun to compare this to the Italians of I Musici. Both versions are amazing, but you really get a sense of "national sensibilities." Britten's own version is much more "British" in its understatement and wit, which isn't to diminish I Musici's in the slightest. That version also available on YT; worth a comparison listen.
@fevertreeful7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info - will listen to the I Musici recording. I don't yet know what it's like. But whatever it's like, I would think that the Britten recording has to be the definitive version.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the kids who don't practice. I'm probably gonna hit a speed bump with my talent and have to start practicing soon too. I love these challenging pieces that force you to practice cause they make you better, but the only problem is I hate practicing. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

IS IT ME, OR ARE THE COMMERCIALS BECOMING EVER MORE INTRUSIVE ON KZbin? IT IS ESPECIALLY ANNOYING WHEN ADS INTERRUPT VIDEOS SUCH AS THIS ONE. I THINK KZbin IS SIMPLY TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO BUY INTO THEIR AD-FREE SCHEME. THIS ISN'T YOUR FATHER'S KZbin ANYMORE, IS IT?!
@nonenoneonenonenone9 жыл бұрын
Shame on you for monetizing this so it is interrupted by commercials!
@ScherzoMusic9 жыл бұрын
This was uploaded without monetisation, and the rightful owner of the recording claimed it as theirs and decided to put adverts on it for their profit. Without the disclaimer, the video would've been removed by the owner of the recording. Surely you'd rather have an excellent recording of a fantastic piece readily available for you to listen, albeit with a couple of relatively non intrusive adverts, than not have it at all? Have a good day
@nonenoneonenonenone9 жыл бұрын
No, I can buy a cd, the proper way. You were stealing.
@ScherzoMusic9 жыл бұрын
I would just like to reiterate what I said, the video was not monetised by me, but by the owner of the recording, which is the studio who recorded it and who sold the disc. KZbin permits for copyrighted content to stay on it if the owner of the content allows it, which is the case here. The owner of the content may choose to display advertisements on the given content for THEIR profit, not mine. Therefore I am not stealing, I am providing a relatively large amount of people who want to listen to this recording of this piece with a cost free manner to do so, while the owner of the recording consents to this, all the while making a small profit for themselves. Notice that the adverts are conveniently placed in between movements of the piece and so really aren't too disruptive to its flow. Also, I would like to point out that if you consider uploading music to KZbin stealing, you are only fuelling this seemingly heinous act by watching the videos concerned. I doubt that your sole use of KZbin is of going to videos like mine and commenting on how the uploaded is stealing, but that you use KZbin as it is meant to be used, as a free viewing platform for a very diverse range of different forms of media, which countless people make use of and appreciate in a positive manner on a daily basis. I invite you to reflect the next time you decide to comment in a negative manner on a resource so clearly appreciated by many other individuals. Thank you.
@christophermacintyre58909 жыл бұрын
+zzindorf Then why the hell are you watching this video then, you hypocrite? If you can buy the CD, then why didn't you? Furthermore, the owner of this recording is probably making a lot more revenue from the advertising money then the would by someone buying the MP3 or CD, especially for an older recording like this. I (and probably most other people if they are collectors) buy used CD's off of Amazon anyway, and don't usually buy new recordings on CD.
@christophermacintyre58909 жыл бұрын
+Scherzo Music True words, but I wouldn't (and didn't) say it as politely as you did. And the funny thing is you and I have probably spent more money on Classical CDs than this person ever will.
