@@gBoogie47 Thats the thing about modern audio gear. It all has to be of a high quality standard just so they can compete. When you buy more expensive gear its usually only for a very slight improvement over the cheaper stuff and casuals probably won't even be able to tell the difference.

Thx for the review, very useful. Couple of comments: 1- The Asgard 3 switches between headphones and RCA out when you unplug the headphones - ie it’s only headphones when they are plugged in, and when unplugged the RCAs come on (whether the headphone is disconnected or not doesn’t matter since they are not plugged in). I actually like this and use it often (the Asgard is my computer’s pre/headphone amp) 2- My experience is brighter makes for more soundstage separation. I think this might be because the phase information giving you the soundstage matters most at higher frequencies, so if those are louder, you’d get more of that.

Should it help anyone, I found IEM (CampFire Andromeda) to be much more noisier on Jot2 SE than Asg3 SE. IEM match is necessary and on Jot2, only ultra setting takes away the noise but then also detracts from the overall quality (the default setting below ultra is better and noise is not so audible with sound). I don't normally go IEM on my amp and use Focal Clears instead but thought I'd share what I found out of curiosity.

I ordered the Jotunheim 2 and Modius back in April and they've been on rolling backorder for over 2 months now, and this video makes me worry about my purchase... I chose the Jotunheim 2 because I heard the SE and balanced output have different sound signatures. With Jot2's SE sounding like Class A and being a bit better than the Asgard 3, and the balanced output sounding like a linear amp on par with the A90. So me thinking it'd be an amazing first amp to buy since I'd get two sound signatures from one amp thought this was a no brainer since I could then see whether I like a more linear or warm sound more. Of course, if I get my Jot2 and enjoy it, then I shouldn't care whether it was the right or wrong purchase, since it's always better to be happy with what you have, but thinking I might have been about the same spending half as much money makes me feel like shit nonetheless. Here's hoping I at least get the two separate sound signatures so I can at least feel good about that, and if I like warm better, I can have my next purchase be the Monoprice Liquid Platinum, and if I like linear more, then I can get the Rupert Neve RNHP or maybe something higher end.
@redleather4203 жыл бұрын
You mentioned that this is your first purchase and maybe your first entry into high end audio. Let me try and save you a lot of time. And I don't mean to come off snarky or rude. You are at the wrong place. Z actually got me into hind audio about 2 years ago. Just like he seems to have gotten you into hi end audio. I could be wrong of course about your situation. Save yourself the 8 months it took me. Of basically worshiping zeos reviews and products. Go to head fi or super best audio friends. Find the forums using Google type in" jotunheim 2 review / impressions forum" directly into Google just like that are at super best audio friends or headphones to the end of that sentence or search. And you will find very long threads of extremely experienced audio files they have all personally had most of the high end and mid-fi gear in the past decade. They will tell you what sounds best as a DAC they will tell you which amps to go for for whatever your preference is. There is so much information there please do not feel so badly based on this review. Zeos is fun to watch And I hope you keep watching him but if you want actual impressions go to the forums I mentioned. Even his own forum hifiguides have great members with everything you need. But try the first two I mentioned first. To get to your question about the jot2 you saying that it is your first amp? I would not recommend anything this high-end for your first time. You have no reference and will therefore ruin a lot of the excitement of upgrading gear in the future because you are starting so high. To set the record straight the jot 2 single ended does sound different than the balanced. But it is not majorly so. It is slightly more round and full sounding basically like the Asgard. And the balanced is superior in every way. It does not sound like a topping product in any way although the high end a90 does get closer to schiit and burson and other audiophile brands however I would stay away from China gear until you know exactly what they sound like especially the measurement ones. I know this is a long message but if you go to the forums you will have saved a lot of time.

@@redleather420 Zeos didn't even exist on KZbin when my interest in audiophilia began, but he's the one that reignited my interest about 10 years after I first wanted to get into it. I've checked all the forums, I've done all my research, and that's why I decided to invest in the Jot2/Modius stack. What I said in my comment was that I just feel like it might have been a bit smarter for me to save $200 and go with the Asgard 3 since, even with the research I did before buying them, I saw that the Jot2 was better than the A3, but not double the price better. I went with Jot2 because of the different sound from each output, and this video made me worry if THAT part was the mistake. Also, who's to say I want to upgrade in the future? If I am to buy anything else, it'd most likely just be a tube amp/hybrid tube amp and that's it. Starting off this "high end" is so I don't have to waste money with upgrading. If I want to hear a different sound, I'll start with the headphones since that's what will most directly change the sound.
@FiniteCS3 жыл бұрын
@@cobrabucket Oh, I know the Jot2 is worth the extra money over the Magnius, it was whether it was worth the extra money over the Asgard 3 that I'm iffy about. The reason I chose the Jot2 over the A3 was due to people saying that the difference between the SE and balanced outputs basically made the Jot2 like having two amps in one. Hearing people say otherwise is what is psyching me out since I don't want to get my Jot2, hear that the difference is so slight between the two outputs that it's not worth paying $200 extra for, and then be sad that I could have spent have as much for the Asgard 3 and been just as happy.

@engolivecomau3 жыл бұрын
Not for me. I had both Jot2 and Asg3 and tried SE for a while before going balanced. Both sound good, they are slightly different. I personally liked the Asg3 better because it softens the harsh tracks (high female vocals sounding metallic/sharper). I have a mix of flacs and MP3s and listen mostly to pop, vocal jazz and edm. Harshness often comes down to bad recordings than file quality. If I still have both today and SE is the only choice, I would listen to Asg3 SE. But with choice of SE and Bal, I do enjoy the Bal output on Jot2 better (more impact and 3d) to my ears. Headphone- Focal clears.

Now Schiit needs to introduce a really good DAC in this price range with multibit, like the Modius Multibit everyone has been expecting since forever. A good mid priced, mid $1K DAC that stacks with everything else, but without measurements bullshit that nobody needs. Like $300-450. Still don't understand why there isn't a cheaper Bifrost DS. But yeah, a good multibit around $500 or below with small form but with the current USB-B input. Sort of Modi Multibit plus Modius form with the good USB. And charge 350-400 for it. Power output differences between products is usually more obvious when you get up around 300 ohms rather than at the lower values isn't it? Many nice headsets can be in that range so only using the 50ohm value for power output wouldn't that be sort of misleading. I use an Asgard as my PC gaming amp where for that use I do not really care about having a balanced output with a set of HD6XX headphones and it is awesome for that use and not at a bad price point. Comparing balanced to unbalanced you should be seeing a difference between the performance favoring the balanced output if it is done correctly. For music I use a Mjolnir 2 balanced output amp hooked to a Gungnir multibit dac which granted is in a different price tier but still excellent for what it cost.

Hey zeos and guys here in the comment. Would you recommend schiit over topping for hifiman planar headphones? I got sundara and anandas and looking for a dac/amp now. Thanks
@devinmatteson3 жыл бұрын
Topping amps seem too linear and lifeless. Schiit amps will give the music more emotion and better slam. Unless you just care about analyzing your music, must people I believe would enjoy the Schitt amps. Check out Bad Guy Good Audio Reviews. He has a Schiit stack and loves his Hifimans on it.

@@colinwilby8803 Topping ‘amps’. I as well have a Topping D70s. I like their dacs a lot, as I prefer clean linear dacs. But when it comes to amps, I think for the majority of users that they’d prefer Schiit amps and other class A like amps over topping’s offerings. This all is subjective. What is enough for one person is lacking for another. It also depends on the cans that you are feeding. Topping amps might provide enough slam for your cans but might lack on others.

I have Jot I and found the single ended harsh too, even using an external DAC. If Jot II single ended is harsh too, I don't see how it's really an improvement over Jot I. The balanced HP out sounds OK. I really don't use Jot I as a headphone amp anymore. I just use it as a preamp for my speaker amp via XLR out. It works quite nicely as a preamp.
@Michael_mki2333 жыл бұрын
I have the Jot2, and can safely say that that is not the case for the SE out. It isn't harsh at all. It is very similar to the sound of the Asgard 3 according to the people on HiFi Guides that have listened to both. The balanced out still has a touch of that warmth, but is cleaner, more "neutral" sound. It's better to think of the Jot2 as getting two $200-$300 amps instead of a single $400 amp, because the SE and balanced out do sound different enough to warrant that line of thought.

The Jotunheim 1 has glaring highs. This Schiit glare pairs well with the Hifiman LCD-X to produce an open lively present soundstage, rounded guitar tones come alive. The Schiit glare also pairs well with the Hifiman Ananda.

Version 2 of the Zen dac isn’t going to be much different than the OG. Watch his review of the original zen dac, and add a ~1-2% increase in performance. I really enjoy my Zen dac OG and would highly recommend it for it’s price.

What headphone and amp should I buy? on 500$ budget for music and movies. I want quality sound with a low bass level (it's a must for movies and series) but not like shaking my head bass. for music I listen to symphonies, old rock, 60-90', hits, deep house, and more (yes I like a lot of types depends on my mood). and it will connect to a PC. and I don't like gaming headphones they sound like garbage. any suggestions? (also only from amazon) thank you :)

@@joshualee6932 Thanks for the answer, I see that they have RCA in the back so I need an adapter? my pc have 3.5, S/PDIF, and HDMI so I probably can only use a 3.5 to RCA cable. but I'm worried it will lower the quality (now I'm using Pioneer amp connected with S/PDIF and 2 shelf speakers )
