Great review, Ron, thanks! I've been waiting for this one, too. DAC's are a tough one especially if they aren't something you do deep dive's into and have a lot to compare to. I've owned one for about four months. You really did hit on two great points in that this DAC has amazing resolution and it does sound smoother especially for the price (it's a bargain!). The "warm" tag has been applied to this DAC by some and you are right that it isn't rolled off at all but it's the inherent smoothness and a somewhat thicker bass region that gives people that impression. It is a chip based R2R ladder DAC which are known for being more natural and realistic sounding in regard to tone and this DAC has it. Like you, I'm a soundstage guy and this thing throws up a huge stage with excellent imaging. Thanks again, Ron!

Every DAC has a "flavor". The trick is to find a DAC (that you can afford) with a flavor you like. Smooth, but detailed is a pretty good description of the Bifrost 2. I'm delighted with mine. I don't really see a reason (short of winning the lottery) to ever upgrade it. No filters to mess with, no menus, just pick your input and go.

Hi Ron - Since you are new to digital you have a great opportunity to share your learning with your audience. How about doing 2 or 3-way comparison’s between DACs (of all price ranges). Can you really tell them difference between a portable DAC, a bifrost 2 and a Lampizator? How would you describe the difference in terms your audience could learn from? Based on your best-sounding records video, you’re very familiar with soundstaging, yet that isn’t really mentioned here. How about finding a record with the same mix released on vinyl and digital and doing a listening test between them? How about comparing CD quality files to 24/192 files? Lots of stuff that your audience would like to learn along with you. Being a beginner can be an advantage!

In the market for a new DAC (have a Bifrost 1) and am looking at the BF2, Ares II, and rme adi-2. Not sure which way to go but I'm intrigued with the EQ ability of the RME to set presets for all my headphones. I don't use PC/USB connection but use a DAP/Coax so all of Schiit's work will benefit me zilch.
@18yearsoldnot

Upstream you could insert a digital to digital converter (ddc). Ideally you’d use usb and audiophile software such as roon or Audirvana (old non subscription version easily torrented fyi) but if you’re dead set on coax and you want to eq the bifrost, easiest way is to get a schiit Loki and do it in the analogue stage. If you want to do it in the digital stage, you can insert a mini dsp in the middle of the toslink cables - I use Hifiberry dac+dsp (optical instead of coax), and that has proven to be an excellent jitter remover as well as a Spotify, AirPlay, DLNA endpoint as well! I’d recommend the hifiberry dac + dsp if you’ve got the time to learn how to use it. You can even go into the dsp settings using sigma studio where you can set up sbx bass boost (which is like what you get on those cheap creative sound blaster dacs), but I found it to be very good for filling in mid bass harmonics that make e.g. my hd 660s sound incredible and actually fun to listen to.

Think the hot DAC's near it's price would be RME ADI-2 at $1150 or more price appropriate Denafrips Ares.RME has many adjustment options. Denafrips seems to be very smooth.I would like to know what it sounds like vs these or Gungir.But one I am aiming for is the pricier Benchmark DAC Pre though fully loaded thats three of these.Still modern DACs have coma a long way and this with some XLR's into the Freya I am sure would be dandy full Schiit stack or with another amp.

I don't know much about stereo equipment, but why would you need balanced outputs on your DAC? Aren't you running the DAC to an amp ideally? Wouldn't you headphone amp have outputs for headphones further down the chain?
@careylymanjones
@careylymanjones 2 жыл бұрын
Balanced interconnects pretty much kill any sort of ground-loop issues. Not an issue on short runs, but the reason quality microphones all use XLR cables is that on longer runs, they're less susceptible to inductive noise. Balanced devices send two copies of the signal, one 180 deg out of phase with the other. The receiving devices flips the out of phase copy back into phase, which flips the phase of any noise the out of phase copy picked up, cancelling the noise then the two copies are recombined. Again, not a problem for short runs, but if you wanted to have a component, such as a headphone amp at your listening position, balanced cables are a bit better than single-ended.

I just wish their DACs had streamers built in. I find it really frustrating in this day and age, that so many DAC makers are making them as stand alone devices without having at least ONE model with streamer functionality - or put another way, why aren't they producing streamers with built in DACs when the vast majority of people now will be accessing their digital music source via streaming. It really bugs me, that I'd love to use a DAC such as the one's Schiit is making (they look great) but then Im forced to then buy another "thing" (streaming device) to then plug into that. Grrrrr

I have the Bifrost Multibit with the Gen 5 USB and a lot of the statements yuo mention about the sound are true even with the previous gen. Going from the Modi 2 DAC to the Bifrist made an audible different when listening through an Asgard 2 amp and Hifiman HE400i planar magnetics. Everything sounded more open and smoothed out. Much like turning up the anti-aliasing in a video game, doesn't change what you're seeing, it just is a little easier on your eyes as the jagged edges are less pronounced. The Modi 2 seemed more lively but could at times be a little crunchy.

I feel the Schiit DAC to have today is the Modius. I just ordered one this week (haven’t herd it yet). It would be interesting if you could get one as well and compare their sound. I personally have tired a bit of the multibit sound. After 3+ years of R2R I’m now looking for more resolution that I think only the top DS DAC chips can offer.
@pure5152
@pure5152 4 жыл бұрын
Very delayed and may not be exactly helpful, but I have a modius and gungnir multibit dac (analog 2 version). My overall impressions are that the modius is impressively resolving and very close to the gungnir multibit in resolve (uncannily close, especially using balanced output). Where the gungnir multibit definitely pulls ahead is dynamics (macro and micro), meaning it slams a lot harder, and to me that makes things just sound a lot more alive, engaging and realistic. The modius is slightly warmer in the midbass than the gungnir multibit, which adds some body to colder/more neutral amps/headphones. For $199 the modius is an absolute steal, but the gungnir multibit is (to me) still the better overall DAC. I'm very curious about the bifrost 2 though, just for the smaller footprint.

Its the same dinky little remote they use on all their preamps, the Saga, Freya. And I NEED a good preamp and I'd love to have one with a tube buffer and a resistor ladder attenuator but I need a remote because my arm is not 15 feet long. Seriously, I put my Bifrost 2 (has internal transformer) on the bottom, added my Magnius headphone amp (external pwr supply) on top of the Bifrost. Added the Lokius on top of the Magnius (the Magnius seems to shield the Lokius adequately) and the Mani 2 goes on top. To anyone considering the Bifrost 2 or any other multibit DAC: the sampling rate affects the sound, even the sound of KZbin videos. Every sigma-delta DAC has an asynchronous (not tied to the incoming sample rate) conversion. Multibit is synchronous, either in multiples of 44.1 or 48 KHz. Your CD's, MP3's, and Red Book-res FLAC's stream at 44.1 KHz/s. Your videos and high-res FLAC's stream at 48, 96, or 192 KHz/s. If you're set to the other multiple you'll probably hear a grainy treble which immediately smooths out once you've reset to the correct one. It's a PITA (pain in the ass) until you get used to resetting the audio output device to the correct sampling rate.

Curious about the actual message behind the simple attitude towards the DAC, as ... it definitely shows it's nothing to be excited about.

@@Michael-mh4nt I've done ABX, also, I do measurements to add room treatment to address specific parts of the response, so I have the Microphones also. Part of the test after checking for standing waves and all that is how clean recordings come through and if there are not too many standing waves or echoes on the sound (waterfall). No brainer, listen to yourself on the washroom and then on a bigger room. Do not tell me it sounds the same. If your recording sounds like you are on a Bathroom, it's bad. It's supposed to sound clean, but not dull and lifeless. So, same room, same placement, same speakers, two different amplifiers. It sounds different. Note that the target curve is the same, YET music sounds different on a *recording*. It doesn't get more technical than that... it's a microphone taking the information, not my ears. It's even easier to ABX the recordings as you can cut and edit on the program. Plus, I have attenuators to effectively run horizontal bi-amplification. These attenuators have various channels allowing me to run ABX at a decent speed using the same input on the Preamp (or simply using the preamp inputs). But anyway, I do not need to make an effort to notice that a Saxophone that sounds on the outside part of the speaker with one DAC sounds now coming from the Speaker from the Other DAC. I do not need an ABX to tell on one DAC the imaging is sharp in the middle, while on another it's rather wide. I do not need ABX to hear that the hi-hat sounds further back on the plane compared to another DAC or AMP. My friends do not need an ABX when they come home and say "Holy fuck, that is so much more punchy!" Oh wait, that's because some of those DACs and AMPs were broken... sure yeah, right. It might be the fact that some measured %0.00005 THD vs %0.0003 THD, as if we could hear anything below 0.3% THD at all. Think that Vinyl has around 60/64 dB SNR, and it sounds amazing. What adds to the discussion to have 99 or 113 dB SNR? And how are you playing music, and what music to make this even remotely relevant? 90dB+ speaker sensitivity with 100WPC full throttle all day long my friend? It takes experience, drop the cash and then talk some. Else, keep reading about measurements and having your hard bias your way. It's irrelevant to me, I know what I am hearing and it's me enjoying it. Be happy with a PC soundcard and a pair of mini-monitors, they measure flat and clean for under $1000, and they for sure sound the same than any other rig out there that is flat and measure alike, but costs x5 more, right? There, go... be happy.

@@Michael-mh4nt BTW, not interested in telling what gear I do have or have had. Why? Well, because I bet my ass you would tell me how it sounds by looking graphs. What's the point? I do not have tube amps, I do not like them, and it's not because they "sound broken".

@@Michael-mh4nt I Did it changing to the former and the later in line channels available to the attenuator? I said is multi-channel, right? S/PDIF Splitter, Swap source, change the channel. That's why I said decent speed. It's not hard. For Amps, it gets a bit more complicated but I fix old gear so I have gadgets, such a speaker switch, dim bulb tester, and stuff like that that was DIY made. I can connect safely 2 amps into one speaker, that's no big deal and its cheap. The preamp has multiple outs, I can feed 2 amps. And as I said... it's NO HELP going around saying they sound the same as long as "they are not broken"... as if engineers develop stuff that is broken and is sold by bulk! Man, the hefty amount of companies that all sound the same, yet there are so many variations of models. Would it be that most of them are broken then? Sheez

@@Michael-mh4nt of course its done blind, otherwise we can get into confirmation bias and what would be the point of the test at that stage? In any case, the results are never "oh yeah, this is so much better". Nope! We rarely agree on what we prefer. It's been done to my wife, friends, and they do it for me too. We have no idea what is playing. Yet, the difference is really bold in more than one scenario. Not for everything, I'm not going to lie and say it's day an night every single time. But, there has been differences found among stuff like a transport!!! I did not expect that coming at all, by example. Some amplifiers sound very alike, and simple chip dacs are pretty much the same. But then, as I stated, some features change so much it just loses the point. When DACs start getting interesting one can tell serious differences from the cheap simple ones. The cheap simple ones measure extremely well, sound boring, just like a benchmark amp.

EVERYTHING that you said about the phase invert button is wrong, despite the fact that you tried hard not to say anything so that you wont get in trouble,. why not ask mark about to explain it to you so that you can correct it?

@@Newrecordday2013 phase invert does not "fix the phase problem of older electronics" many designs old and new invert the phase of the signal. this could be the power amp or the pre or the dac. some people are sensitive to inverted phase and think that it sounds bad. for them this button makes a big difference. if you have two components that invert then the total effect is no phase inversion so it depends on all the components in your system. for example many designs that use the very modern and high tech Texas instrument 3886 amplifier chip invert phase (not all of them) so it doesnt have to do with older equipment.

Cool. Here is the exact wording from Schiit, perhaps the word “fix” is where I turned left... >> The Phase invert button serves two purposes, neither of which are common, but which we provide as a courtesy to those who might want it. >> >> 1. It allows you to invert phase to correct for phase irregularities in some very old recordings. This is uncommon but it may be handy if you like to listen to many older recordings or digitize your own vinyl. >> >> 2. It can be helpful if you have a preamplifier which inverts phase and you do not have an amplifier designed to flip the signal back to ‘correct’ phase. Some older tube preamplifiers will do this.
