I've had these amps for a year and half. Had a lot of amps here. Many solid state, many tube. They are all pretty good but most have a little something that bugs me and they end up going bye bye. The Tyr somehow has no thing that really bothers me. It's a music lover's amp, just play it and it won't call attention to itself, just the music. I'm sure it's not the greatest amp there is but has to be one of the best bargains around. I use the Schiit Freya with some museum tubes and cables that cost more than the gear itself. I am constantly amazed at what you get for 4K retail.

Some may disagree of the potential meaning in your statement. Tyr weighs 53#, another highly touted class AB monobloc is AVA's M225 @ a mere 15#. Schiit delivers 3.5x more mass for the same $3400/pr SRP. One might reasonably conclude Schiit's value is higher. Lastly, Tyr has a big PS choke where AVA has multiples of its biggest, most costly electrolytic high-voltage filter capacitors. The former can last virtually forever, the latter has a shelf-life range between 15 to 25 years. Tyr's big PS choke contributes a lot or most of the mass difference.

The Freya + sounds great with the solid state LISST tubes in the left sockets and Tung-Sol 6SN7 GTB in the right if you want a tube sound. Also fund to experiment with the solid-state rectifier from Weber.

Thank you, Thomas for this superb review. Something I'm not clear about: when is it the case that the best power amps can perform their best without the best source and preamp? I don't understand how Tyr's sensitivity to the preamp is a negative. The better, more refined and more revealing is the power amp, I presume in all cases the power amp is more transparent to the source and preamp. I may miss something obvious and if so, I apologize.

Pardon butting in... I'm pairing with CSS Typhons and the Tyrs astound. The current delivery into the 4 ohms is so effortless you get this personal studio concert feeling and that "Ohh! That was their intent when making this recording". They dig out so much bass depth, detail, separation I feel like I'm missing nothing now. I'm 57 and a budget audiophile since HS and never has my system leveled up so much. Wife agrees.

Hasn't anybody noticed the speaker binding posts are so far apart and the IEC power cord connection is right in between them? For me that is a problem in and of itself.

This means it's a very transparent and accurate amp. It's not coloring the sound much if at all. And the fact it keeps up with much higher end preamps. Speaks volumes about it's value and how good they really are when the front gear limits the amps. That's some quality stuff.

Thomas, great review as always! P.S. try a passive preamp instead of an active preamp with the Tyr. Right now I'm using the little Schiit Sys Passive Preamp / dual input switch with my Schiit Vidar amp and you know what, it sounds great. Remember the old maxim - "The best preamp is no preamp at all!" LOL. 😃

I wanted to buy these buy the idle power is 60 watts/channel according to the AI talker on the Schitt site. That's more than my Parasound JC5. I don't want a Class D amp, but the high end D;s are suppose to be sounding better on the high end. Any suggestions?

What does it mean when the reviewer says "if you're looking for lively, look elsewhere." Does that mean it has a poor dynamic range and contrast, and it does not scale correctly from ppp to FFFF?!? Please explain your "vocabularly" such as "liveliness" and what you mean by it, so others know what you mean when you use an audio term ("Lively").

I use a PS Audio GCD as a preamp and get fantastic sound from this combo. I also use Iconoclast cables which preserve timing and air in recordings. This isn’t the 1st time someone said the preamp makes a huge difference.

Something to remember: Schiit is made in the USA and the goal was to provide high end sound without the boutique pricing. More often than not, when you talk 5, and 10,000 pre-amps, you are talking about stuff that is often made in Asia for pennies on the dollar, and arbitrarily overpriced to command respect in the high end community. They often have a lavish overhead to pay for too. Take away the CNC milled chassis and put it in a plain box, then do a double blind test. All too often the high end is a "presentation" voicing. Not better, just specific, and different. A lot of it does seem to smooth out the treble in an unnatural and attenuated way.

I started listening hoping to get some guidance on my plan to match a pair of these amps with a McIntosh pre amp , because I wanted tone controls and Mac has a tremendous reputation. ,I felt the pre amp section more critical, and perhaps could save some money on the amps. Back to the drawing board.

You have it right. As long as you don't make any big mistakes when selecting your amp and speakers, the preamp is definitely the most important component to get right. If you are wondering why this is, it has to do with signal strength. The weaker the signal, the more fragile it is. Lower voltage components have to be made to a higher standard. For example, in order for a line stage to equal the sound quality of a power amp, it needs to be made to a higher standard than the amp. A MM phono preamp has to be made better than the linestage to get the same level of sound quality, Same thing going down to a MC phono stage. Low voltage signals are more prone to be effected by outside factors.

I think it's a bit overpriced I would say about 600 Dollars max I don't understand this, with professional Gear you can get things a lot cheaper I know they sell more of it but even so you can buy a 1600w ab amplifier for 400 dollars. I think it's about time they bought the prices down.

I run Maggie LRS from time to time and I agree the Try is not really great with those speakers. I had much better luck with the 30 watt Pass Labs 30.8. makes no sense but that amp weighs 100 lbs so there is a lot going on with the 30 watts. I would wish for a little more with the LRS but it's close with the 30.8. Probably one of the bigger class A Pass Labs amps would be wonderful with Maggies
