The closest we can get to trusting something is science and even science is not a absolute but it's the best we have. "That's a right angle." "How do you know?" Ron, great review of Tyr amps (I am a Schiit owner of many products). Respectfully, I think it may help your audience with direct comparisons of other amps (none Schiit products) would be insightful to vs other products at or near same price point. Sound clips are good but are also limited over the internet. This additional information may help individuals determine if the Tyr amps will be compatible with their rigs and speakers. These comments are not intended to offend anyone, just trying to provide some constructive feedback. But like you say there is a free 15 day trial to figure out if this amp is right for the purchaser.

Ron, Thanks again for your thoughtful and very entertaining review. As a US-government funded scientist myself, I come to reviews like this for the same reason I participate in the rest of 'audiophile hobby'- to receive thoughtful reviews and 'user impressions', which I compare to other user impressions in other forums, such as Head-Fi etc., which provide me with a collection of 'evidence' that helps me to make up my mind. Subjective evidence is also evidence! This review and your "first impressions' are one of only a few on YT on the Tyr, and I appreciate the thoughtful and careful way you share your experiences. Sure, you are not purporting that your findings constitute a publishable analysis, but I assert - that's not what YT videos should or purport to do. It is predominantly to share your impression as a reviewer who has heard a lot of gear (as most of us have not) and stimulate us to further personal investigation, possibly leading to a personal choice to purchase the item. But it is also to entertain us, and all that you have done, sir, with excellence. Keep going, you are doing very well indeed.

Another great review! Definitely looking forward to your 2024 lineup! So I know you get this all the time and I really hate to ask - but to me it kindof gets to the heart of my audio quest. I love the idea of the Tyrs and truth be told am probably going to purchase, but I am also drawn to the NAD M23 and the idea of efficient digital amplification. I don’t currently have a setup that would do justice to a comparison, but I know you did a review of the NAD M33. Do you have thoughts on Eigentakt Class D amplification ala NAD vs Schiit Tyr? They are somewhat in the same price range.

Great review! Next level. I own the Tyrs and love them. I bought them for my Magnepans. It drives the 1.7i effortlessly. It is a no brainer recommendation for those who love Maggies. The immersive detailed stage is just bliss. I also tried them with my M3 Sapphires and got excellent results, especially in the bass. Settled on the Rogue Cronus 3 with M3 Sapphires since 1.7i need Tyrs power. I am using the Freya S with the Tyrs currently but may upgrade at some point. Considering the Serene or the Benchmark preamp. Possibly a the new Rogue RP5 V.2. Then again the improved Schiit Kara preamp may be closer to these than expected for fraction of cost.

@snowpuppy77, I have the Tyr's and the GR Brutes. I demoed the Schiit Kara in place of my Schiit Freya+ and liked the Freya more than the Kara. The Kara had more clarity and deeper sound stage then the Freya+ but the increased clarity the Kara brought to my system caused a bit of listening fatigue for me. If your speakers are lacking a bit of top end detail, then the Kara may be just right for you.

You used the magic words “dynamic headroom”, something I rarely hear these days. As a fan of NAD amps in the 80’s, that was the bread and butter of their lower wattage amps (20-50 watts) giving such “peak” performance. They were typically +3db on their units but I see know such spec on the Tyr. Any idea? Thanks for a great review!

It has seemed a bit strange that the usual reviewers I depend upon - you, Steve, Darko, etc. have not reviewed this particular amp even though you have all been complimentary of Schiit products in the past. It made me wonder if Schiit just missed the boat on this one. Darko did a video on the making of them but never really weighed in on whether he liked them ( or if he did I missed it). I currently have two Aegirs which I really like. I am curious about what the “2” model will end up like but have always been curious about the TYR. Thank you for this review.

I have the Tyrs and have tested with the Serene KTE and Kara. I prefer the Serene but the Kara gets close. The Serene has more detail, stage size, and texture. I also like the volume control and remote implementation better. But for a fraction of the cost of the Serene, I think the Kara is a really good value. Better then the solid state portion of the Freya+ for me

Great review. I'm really enjoying your delivery and editing style. I ordered a pair of Tyrs back in April. I immediately noted the extra punch and oomph of heavy kick drums and cymbal hits. Female vocals have more clarity. I put on my Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's Blu-Ray to listen to Vinnie Colaiuta's fabulous playing (and all the others as well.😁) The whole performance came alive in a way not previously experienced. The Tyrs handle any of my speakers with ease. From the less sensitive KEF r3 Metas to the Klipsch rp-600m (with Danny's crossover upgrade) music jumps out of them with precession and clarity. My floor standers will knock you over if I get stupid with the remote. BTW... Your Patreon link is not working for me. It's putting a string of text at the end (%E2%80%8B) that results in a "page not found" error. When I crop that string off the end, all works well.

I've never tried a high end amp in my life -- but I'll probably end up getting a 500 Watt Hypex based class-D when I pick up some Magnapan+ I'm genuinely curious though: if you level matched a Hypex NCx500 with Tyr and threw on some blindfolds, while your partner A/Bed the same song on each: Would you be able to consistently tell them apart? I imagine it'd be next to impossible to do it with similar specced class D amps, but amps with completely different topology like Tyr vs Hypex? That might be an interesting challenge. I'm guessing NO - but I'm a huge skeptic.

It looks beautiful. Warranty is great. Assembled in the US? All fantastic. However, I could get a Hypex nCore NCX500 assembled in the US by an american company who also has great customer service, with far more power (700 watts into 4 ohms?), and far better THD/SNR/Crosstalk, etc... for about $1,100. It's overpriced. I have many Schiit products and love every one of them. But I don't understand the thought process behind this product.
@Newrecordday2013
@Newrecordday2013 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I disagree regarding the overpricing. When comparing a choke input power supply to a class D offering and attempting to rationalize the cost difference, that's where I find myself in disagreement. I'm not implying that the NCX500 isn't a great value or a subpar amplifier - it is! What I'm expressing is that because one option (the NCORE) is more affordable, the other (TYR) appears overpriced. Topology and circuit design for class D amps are typically much more cost-effective to build. It's analogous to recreating a 1977 Z28 Camaro to exact OG specs and making it as affordable as a Kia Forte. The irony lies in the fact that the Forte might boast better gas mileage, a smoother, quieter ride (considering THD/SNR/crosstalk), but personally, I'd still prefer the Camaro.

They’re different circuit designs. Tyr relies more on that big choke to store and release energy. Vidar is more of a traditional amp in some ways but also unique with its bridged mode. Speaking of which, you need balanced interconnects in bridged mode of Vidar and Aegir. Tyr has a regular RCA input as well as balanced XLR.
@Mark-rw3kw
@Mark-rw3kw 7 ай бұрын
The Tyr is "balanced, differential amplifier with a unique discrete, current-feedback gain stage, coupled with Continuity output topology that eliminates transconductance droop. In Tyr, we’ve refined Continuity even further, resulting in a cooler-running amplifier." I could be wrong, but didn't see the Continuity output topology mentioned about the Vidar 2. Also, there doesn't appear to be a 4 ohm rating for the Vidar 2 in monobloc mode. That doesn't mean that you can't power 4 ohm speakers when using Vidar 2 in monobloc mode, but typically amps that run in stereo or monobloc have a little harder time with the lower impedances when run as a monobloc.

@snowpuppy77

Remember when Vidar is run mono a 4 ohm speaker will see 2 ohms. So you will trigger protection much easier. Vidar is not a true monoblock. With Tyr 4 ohm speaker sees 4 ohm load. Tyrs are in different league than one or two Vidars. You are not getting something better or more powerful when getting two Vidars vs two Tyrs.

@@goodsound4756 I found this information about restocking fees: "There are some instances where retailers charge illegal restocking fees. Although state laws vary, restocking fees are generally illegal if: 1. They are being charged in connection with the return of defective merchandise; 2. They are being charged because the retailer delivered the wrong merchandise; 3. They are being charged because the retailer failed to deliver the merchandise within the promised time period; 4. They exceed 50% of the purchase price of the merchandise; or 5. The restocking fees are not adequately disclosed to the customer." The Schiit restocking fees are disclosed and are for when someone tries out the product for some period of time and doesn't like the way it sounds, etc. If the box was never opened, then I don't know if Schiit would charge a restocking fee or not. I personally prefer dealing with companies that have at least a minimal restocking fee, because otherwise a lot of people will order stuff just to play around with it for free and then return it (with no intention of ever keeping it), and the cost to the business ultimately gets borne by the people who buy and keep the product. Schiit actually sells some of its products on Amazon at a higher price, due to the return policy that Amazon requires. I don't think they sell this particular amp, mostly their less expensive stuff.
