Stuff from Book 5 of the Schillinger System of Musical Composition.
These are the 3 positive monomial progressions: Cycle of a 3rd ("C3"), Cycle of a 5th ("C5") and Cycle of a 7th ("C7"). Both clockwise form and counterclockwise form.
Open triads only (because they sound so nice on guitar)

I’ve only recently learned of Schillinger, and I’m really liking what I am seeing and hearing. These cycles and their voicings make the ordinary harmonies from the diatonic scale sound rich and rarified. The intonation of your fretboard is extraordinarily good across all six strings all the way to the very top. Nice lesson. Big thumbs up 💎📈🎵🎶©️

Great! Complete new theory. And yet something I seem to have heard so many times in composition.

The one in 3rds reminds of The Kurt Rosenwinkel intro from A Life Unfolds off of The Remedy album. Great video, Noel.

I must say that this is interesting and very well explained. Master Noel, could you put up some more videos of the Schillinger System. I just got the books and I do understand them. There is a part when the resultants are applied to the cycles creating endless music. Thanks!

I really like how you make an effort to make these sound musical and expressive. I studied with a student of Schillinger who told me that Schillinger would have likely been appalled by the book (published posthumously) as the examples selected by the editors were dry and unmusical for the most part. If he had been alive to finish it, the examples would like have come from real-world musical applications of his techniques. It's a shame the book was so poorly done because it has likely put many people off--a real shame considering the incredible number of useful ideas therein. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, it can be a hard read but definitely a treasure trove of information for anyone willing to dig in. It would have been fascinating to actually study with Schillinger!

Great vid! Although I don’t understand why at 12:38 you played C 2nd inversion, when you had written C root position on the whiteboard…
@nohjoh08
@nohjoh08 Жыл бұрын
I was just showing how that one would move. Cycle 5 counterclockwise would go C root pos to F 2nd inversion, or C 1st inv to F root pos, or C 2nd inv to F 1st inv. Since the chords move like that (up), it makes sense to start low on the neck hence starting with a 2nd inversion down there. Sorry for the confusion.

@@nohjoh08 I got the "2 Volumes" version i guess. I got it from India. The "originals" - used ones - have very high prices ... But i want to mention that there is a book out there "Cybernetic Music" by "jaxitron" - Most possible a pseudonym . This book tries to do an approach with a computer language. This book brought me to Schillinger 30 years ago.
