Great video! In 2009 I spent a few days in Interlaken, spending a day on the Jungfrau trip and the next day Murren and the Shilthorn. I'd love to go back and see what I missed (Gimmelwald, Trummelbach Falls, etc). Thanks, Dennis, for bringing back some great memories.

This is a wonderful video, and a great itinerary for visiting the area. I really enjoy your videos, as you are such an authoritative guide on travelling well in so many areas of the world. Your Banff video helped me plan a trip to the Canadian Rockies a few years ago, and I think this video will help me plan this summer's trip to central Europe. I think you might be the first to cover the most important travel advice for Switzerland: Sticking your head out the window during train rides! :-) Seriously though, I think one of the biggest mistakes one could make when travelling around Switzerland is to just view trains as a (pricey) means of transportation to get you from point A to B. There's so many beautiful vistas to be enjoyed, and some of the routes are literally breathtaking. As seen in your video, Interlaken East to Lauterbrunnen is one, the Gotthard Panorama Express route to the Ticino is another one.

Sometimes the first-class windows don't go down but second-class do, so you might need to walk around to find those sliders. Be sure to put it back up in tunnels though, and if its cold, or any time, older locals don't appreciate it. If you must shoot through closed window be sure to minimize glare. Sometimes I tape a black cloth to window to block glare and drape it behind the camera, if I'm not blocking any passengers.

Great video. Easy to watch and good narrating providing useful information. I will be visiting Switzerland for 16 days in early September. Will be spending only 3 days in Grindelwald , Lauterbrunnen and Murren. Plan to do the Murren - Gimmelwald via ferrata, Plan to hike to Birg , maybe Schilthorn and in Grindelwald , hike from First to Bachalpsee and maybe Faulhorn. I had no problem with the multi screen views. I actually like it because it gives the viewer a better perspective. Will be watching your other videos on Switzerland. Keep it up !

Thanks for the reply. My entire trip starts from Geneva - Montreux - Bern - Kandersteg- Bettmeralp - Lauterbrunnen - Grindelwald - Brienz- Luzern - Zurich - Locarno. It's going to be epic ! I have left out Jungfrau as i've been up there a long time ago back in Dec 2002. I really do hope for good weather because everything i have planned is in the outdoors and the mountains.

Hi James, glad you like it and thanks for the feedback on multiscreens -- kind of an experiment this time, curious to know how viewers handle it...a way to pack in more information and keep your eyeballs moving. If I ran all the images as single screen the movie would be more than twice as long, doubtful if viewers would see to the end. I might incorporate some multi in the future but on more limited basis, just for snatches here and there, we'll see...Anyway this movie was a major project, with 1,000 elements, took me nearly 2 months to assemble...it takes that much to fully explain a Big Day at the Shilthorn and Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Before you go to Piz Gloria Shilthorn you might watch the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Aside from Piz Gloria itself and the restaurant the towns of Murren and Lauterbrunnen were used in several scenes. The cable car terminal in Lauterbrunnen and the falls above it were used in several shots. On the cable car look down on the patches of snow for the brown dots, they are Alpine Chamois or mountain goats. Murren is considered by some to be the birthplace of snow skiing. Thanks for the film! It's one of the most beautiful places we visited in Switzerland!

Yes, you could do it based in Lauterbrunnen, but get an early start.

Planning a trip to Switzerland....I've gathered that there are many opinions regarding where to base yourself in the Jungfrau Region. Many believe Lauterbrunnen or Wengen are the preferred places. Some even favor Murren or Grindelwald. So many express a distain for Interlaken. Can I ask why you chose Interlaken for your group?

Interlaken has the advantage of the many train connections. So if you just stay during your trip at one hotel and want to make long day trips to eg Geneva or somewhat shorter to Luzern or you want to go to Kandersteg for a walk then that is possible to do when you are staying in Interlaken. Personally I would book a hotel in Lauterbrunnen or Murren, stay there for a few nights and go on further to explore the country.

Take cable car from Shilthorn down to Murren (way too far for most to walk), then enjoy the delightful, easy stroll from Murren to Gimmelwald, then cable car from Gimmelwald to valley bottom.

so basically you are making it longer, because from schilthorn to Murren and then to lauterbrunnen is direct, but to gimmelwald you go schilthorn to Murren and then further south to gimmelwald and then u go back to murren or to lauterbrunnen. correct?

It's a bit longer to walk, rather than ride, from Murren to Gimmelwald, but only takes about 30 minutes extra compared to cable car. That's the only difference.

I'm sorry i wasn't clear. what I meant is that without the stroll, one would go directly from schilthorn->Murren->lauterbrunnen. with the stroll, you go further south to gimmelwad so its schilthron->murren->gimmelwald->muerren->lauterbrunnen. correct? (we are staying in lauterbrunnen)

Going up, from Lauterbrunnen, you can take the cableway to Grütschalp. Then change to the narrow gauge train to Mürren. Or you can take the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, you can take the cableway up to Mürren, with a change in Gimmelwald. Coming down, the same in reverse. Choose one route each way for the complete circle. Watch my video again, it is very clear.
