NOTE: These elevators are behind turnstiles, so please do not try to ride these unless you are here for official business. I was be to ride this during Doors Open Minneapolis 2023.
This building used to be the Macy’s department store in Downtown Minneapolis. It was open for a long time, but it sadly closed down years ago. The store was 13 floors, including a basement. All of the floors above 4 were offices or used for some other purpose for Macy’s, so not the entire building was used as a store.
The store had 5 Westinghouse elevators that were modernized by Schindler with Adams in the 90’s. Once the Macy’s store closed down, the building was repurposed. Since this was formerly the original Dayton’s department store, this building was renamed “The Dayton’s Project” in order to honor the historical heritage of the building.
The building has since become offices, and the entire building was gutted and renovated. Schindler was called once again to modernize the elevators. This time, they added the PORT system. Even though some of the cars run a little rough, They did a very nice job. They kept the same design of the cabs, and they seem very efficient. I like the flow of logos where the old indicators were. It’s also nice to see Adams buttons on a newer Schindler install, and not MAD. These are very nice elevators, and it’s nice to see how beautifully they repurposed the building. I do find it weird that car E is slightly smaller than the others.
If you want to see the elevators with their previous mod, check out this video by @NorthlandElevators: • Westinghouse/Schindler...
Schindler also installed some brand new 5500 Low-Rise elevators (which you can see towards the start of the video). Those will be uploaded soon!
