How can you tell if you have schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that impacts the way people think, feel, and behave. Some symptoms of schizophrenia are hallucinations, delusions, problems thinking clearly, and disorganized behavior. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many people with schizophrenia can live in their communities, have positive relationships, maintain employment, and continue to work towards their goals.

When I was 12 years old I started showing signs of psychosis. I would isolate from my friends and family. I would get angry easily. And heard my name being called and saw shadows. And had a hard time with school. I was hospitalized, and was diagnosed with psychosis nos (not otherwise specified) as I got older I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’m 20 now. I’m on medication that helps me.and I’m still learning how to deal with my hallucinations.

I don’t want to self diagnose my self, but i can relate to these symptoms.I heard my mama call my name loud in clear and she said she did not call me.I also am hearing other people talking.I once saw a teddy bear turn it’s head towards me,it looked fine when I looked at it.the things I use to do is not me anymore.i feel like people are trying to shoot me from anywhere.idk what this is but most of the time am having a hard time understanding my emotions and sometimes expressing them.this thought confuses me of why I don’t know if I am real or don’t want to live anymore.I’m not really sure if I make any since.but I’m confused.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, psychiatrists and psychologists that didnt have these experiences would give shock therapy to those that had these gifts. They assumed that because their veil hadn't been lifted (read your bible) and that didnt have those same experiences, that there was something wrong with that individual. But, in reality they were unknowingly Gaslighting this individual because they didnt experience or understand it. So.... that was, in itself, a form of mental abuse (intentional or not) by the psychologist or psychiatrist. I would seriously seek a second opinion. The same symptoms they list here are also a few of the gifts that Empaths may have. More and more Psychologists are now Empaths and they can tell you more precisely what is going on vs someone who has never had any experiences. That's kind of like going to a male Dr and letting him try to explain to a woman exactly what it would feel like to have a baby totally natural. A good place to start is here... The Empath's Survival Guide Judith Orloff, MD kzbin.info/www/bejne/d16xn2OMobhjebc The first thing an Empath needs to hear is confirmation that they really arent crazy. There are numerous support people that can actually help you learn to manage your stuff.

Eventhough I know that I could have never been public figure I dreamed of for over the years and my whole family members have adviced me to get this fucking hell out of my brain, I keep doing it and I really don't give a damn. I go through a similar thing too. Sometimes when I’m laying in bed, usually when I’m depressed, I sometimes hear voices calling my name. It’s usually my parents voices, or a voice that isn’t familiar to me. the voices are not loud enough to be a real sound, but they are too loud to be a thought. It kinda feels like when your waken up by a dream or something like that.

I’m pretty sure this video is only meant for the logical thinker that knows what’s happening to them. I have found, people with schizophrenia don’t think they have it they won’t admit it and then they won’t take their medication because they don’t believe they need it. This video makes it seem like it’s so easy to deal with it but the people I know refused to take medication and swear there’s nothing wrong with them.

I recovered from severe schizophrenia without any medication. I ignored the hallucinations and refused to believe in them. I changed all of the habits of thought not believing what I was believing. I had to entirely reprogram my mind and way of thinking. I just retired from a high security airport job after working for 30 years. I not only beat the illness, I beat those who seek to treat the illness. The things that we do affect the way that we feel. If there is a problem with the mind, it could be from the choices that you make that result in the way that you feel. If you want to know how to treat the illness, talk to someone who beat it.

This is a superb video because while being educational and showing schizophrenia as the severe illness it is (can be), the tone and animation show that those suffering from it are humans, like all of “us” that are affected by an illness. All mental health illnesses exist, meaning they are hard BUT normal (!) and the people suffering from them should be treated as such.

Hi. I am from Kenya 🇰🇪 and last year(2020) October i was diagnosed with schizophrenia and I have been taking ZyPREXA Olanzapine tablets 💊💊💊 for a months. It started in the year 2018 where i was experiencing similar symptoms as the ones you've mentioned above. My very often symptom is having restless nights, nightmares, hallucinations, delusions and so forth. I have a lot to say but it's good to know that one can live normal and healthy with schizophrenia. I have schizoaffective (bipolar type). My first symptom, aside from depression, was when I was ages 10-12 and believed that I was a well-known figure in the community, despite my family just being a normal nuclear suburban family. My second was in high school, the majority of which was the delusion that I was capable of pulling forces to overthrow the American government and position myself as the ruler of a new political entity. My third was the onset of auditory hallucinations. The first was when I worked at a casual deli-style restaurant after high school, where I would sometimes hear a young girl speak to me, only ever in my left ear, whenever I was working the food prep stations. My fourth was visual hallucinations. I would sometimes see what I believed to be mice running under furniture, including in my bedroom, and in the den of my dad's old house. I admitted myself to the psychiatric hospital of a well-known, well-respected private university/hospital in the city I used to live four times in less than three years, and my ten-year anniversary of stability will be on the 20th of this month, April. Despite being well-medicated, I still have occasional symptoms, but none severe enough to warrant readmission.

I don’t like it when I have nightmares and the pains are feeling in my body, like 10% to 20% of the real pain, like if a metal wire is piercing through my sac and groin, I could feel around 10% to 20% of the pain right at the spot. Once I had a dream that a paper is cutted deep into my arm and I could feel the pain rights the spot, the pain is inside my brains but it’s “alive” right at the spot where it is in my body. Anal sex in my dream actually gives the real thing to bodily response, as it induced the same real feelings and bodily fluid discharge, it’s called R.E.M served with neurotic disorder, all are happening in the brains but the pains , experiences and sensations are right on the spot on the body.

I have a close relative who has been very socially withdrawn since about age 15 (20 now), she has always seemed very flat and unexcited about anything since around that age, I’ve only seen her laugh when playing with my baby. Over the last few months her mind state has really deteriorated, she has been isolating herself even more, to the point that her mum has heard her talking and laughing to herself in a room with nobody else in it. She locked herself in her bedroom for 2 days last week and it was only when my mum realised she didn’t have to TV remote, and no charger for her phone that she realised she had been sitting there looking into a mirror for at least some of that time, saying things like “no I don’t want to, no I won’t!” Terribly, yesterday she tried to end it all, luckily enough she was found before it was over, she’s in the hospital now we are waiting for a diagnosis, from the reading I’ve done it sounds like schizophrenia she ticks some of the boxes. Is anyone much of an expert to say if it sounds right? Maybe an extreme form of depression? She is also quite distrusting of others. Heartbroken for her.

I have a mental illness i don't know what you call it.when there is a football world cup i become the greatest player in my thoughts and enjoy my stardom . it happens with me from a small age .if there is tennis tournament i become the best tennis player and in my mind and thoughts i enjoy being that person actually I don't like my reality and I enjoy everything in my thoughts.similarly be it any sporting event i become the best player in my thoughts and enjoy the stardom,i feel happy and I don't even know i m doing this.if i like a car i think that i have already bought the car and i m enjoying the ride of it.i don't know what it is .. I don't like being myself.i remember when i was a teen like 15 i became a prophet of God in my thoughts and i enjoyed it because prophet is a powerful personality.that time i thought of myself as a prophet of God in my subconscious mind.i m sad now and i have no Life plans no social interaction no sex drive no children no future goals ..just this delusional thoughts that pop out of nowhere..i have depression and anxiety..heart beat paltipitations etc😞😭😭😭

Do you struggle daily with your mental health? When you do because of the brain chemistry and the chemical imbalance in your brain you go through Depersonalisation. A lot of people who smoke weed for the first time or do drugs like LSD often experience this when doing too much drugs. Symptoms often are feeling out of control. Feel like your going crazy. You don’t recognise yourself. You question your life and the people around you. You feel disconnected. It’s very very scary but it does pass. Unfortunately because it’s a natural response to too much stress in the body they isn’t really anything doctors can do medication wise. Some have it for 2 week some have it for 2 month. If this is effecting your daily life and tasks then do speak to a doctor they can run blood tests as you may be lacking some vitamins also

Two years ago I was not in a good state, struggling with an eating disorder, showing signs of a bipolar disorder and on top of that I started seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. I had full on conversations with people not knowing nobody was there or playing a deck of cards by myself and as I try to grab them when they fell on the ground they disappeared. I was constantly terrified because I couldn’t tell the hallucinations and reality apart. After a while I got my shit together and slowly started to recover, even though the feeling of being watched all the time never stopped. However, lately I again begun to see hallucinations. I’m terrified, I do not want to start this all over again.

please know that many people see people and things that arent there and they hear them too. they are just devils interacting with you pretending to be people. have you read the Bible? This has been known about since the beginning of time. Jesus saves. any born again Christian can tell you that they are just devils attacking you. try googling spiritual warfare. Anytime someone talks about the "enemy' that is code for a spirit that is appearing before them and talking to them becuase the enemy are the devils aka spirits, i feel bad that more born again chirstians aren't forthcoming about seeing and hearing spirits, I think more people could be saved if they knew that this was actually pretty normal.... long story short the Bible is true. You need to ask God for help and if you're involved in sin you must repent. it is a requirement! and you need to be baptized. then you can call them out in Jesus name. if you sincerely ask God for help He will help you. and He will expose them to you so you can understand that what I and other christians tell you is actually true. the Bible is true. You are not crazy youre just deceived by thinking it is coming from your own brain.

I have schizophrenia and wasn't diagnosed until this past fall. It was hereditary on my dad's side, which my family ignored and didn'twant to acknowledge. It was because my dad was a pedophile. I have been isolated for 20 years. I would have all these symptoms and yet was misdiagnosed multiple times. A lot of my family members don't believe me. My psychiatrist does though and my husband. Small support system but I am grateful for them.

But I also just said "My eyes are playing tricks on me" I didn't really know what the difference between seeing things and your eyes tricking you, I really thought all of this was normal. I never had a schizophrenic episode in my life until some guy bought me a drink and hours later I started seeing things and could not sleep, I would see scary looking things in walls like demons and in people.. when I would scratch my arm the feeling would be delayed and wouldn't show up until seconds later and when people would talk the words would be delayed with their mouths. The tv would also talk to me and this was literally after I had a drink from some stranger. I called the police the same night and they tested my blood for drugs and said nothing was found in my system, I was just paranoid. Then, eventually I had to go to the mental hospital because I couldn't sleep for months even when I tried to. This happened in 2018, no schizophrenics in my family or nothing. Now in 2020 back in June the same thing happened some guy bought me a drink and I had another episode and had to go to the mental institution because I wasn't in my right mind, seeing and hearing things. They said I had psychosis and schizophrenia, is it my mind playing tricks on me making me think they did something to my drink or am I actually schizophrenic because I never experienced this ever, the first time it happened I was 19. Now I am 22.

@Rebel Mixes I didn't mean that. I meant the man buying her a drink was the first manifestation of psychosis, sort of like a warning per se, or maybe a way to indicate causation, albeit a false causation. So the man buying her a drink wasn't actually there.

I had drug induced psychosis from eating a strong edible when I was 18 and spiraled after that for about a year. I heard voices and was convinced I was being controlled by aliens and became terrified of bald people because they were going to capture me. It sounds crazy but I believed it entirely. Sometimes I'll eat something and realize it had been expired and would convince myself that I was being poisoned because of the expired food. I haven't been diagnosed, but I believe my grandma has schizophrenia, so it could be possible I have it as well. Florescent lights in grocery stores seem to trigger me; I become hyper aware of depth perception and things look farther and bigger and smaller and closer very randomly. It can be extremely disorienting. That's how it felt on the edible; I would become hyper aware of my depth perception and would end up disorienting myself. Sorry for the tangent, I'm just trying to share my experience and maybe someone else can relate and not feel alone. It's crazy what the brain can do.

That is different than having schizophrenia. Many people in the comments are confusing acts of imagination/coping skills with this illness. Many creative and/or traumatized people have rich fantasy lives, especially if you're not an adult yet. Think about whether it is voluntary or not, though, and whether you actually believe your imaginary friends are real people. Big difference in knowing you made up a character and actually hearing a painting talk to you and not being able to control it.

A lot of people are saying that I never had schizophrenia. I knew that would happen. I did have all of the symptoms 24/7. It’s torture. My daughter is still being treated for it. I had to go back home to New Jersey from Chicago because I refused to be treated for it. I had to trust my own unstable mind more than the doctors, something you are not supposed to do. I made the right decision however, I can understand that it won’t work out for everyone the way it worked for me. I didn’t even know what it was until years later since they didn’t even tell me what I had. It’s been so long ago now but my symptoms were very real. I was alone when I had the first psychosis. My head began to pop as scales came off my brain and there was a spider running around in my head. I began hearing voices and seeing the words spelled out in front of me. I began feeling and seeing fire engulfing me. I began having tunnel vision as the fire closed in around me. I thought I was going to hell. I put my head down to let the blood rush to my head and it didn’t do any good. I started praying and waiting, praying and waiting. Slowly the fire began to subside. The hallucinations persisted and the angry person in the mirror began to yell at me with his face flinching. He was very angry at me. Among the many hallucinations there was a finger that kept poking me in the eye. It poked me in the eye so much that my eye began to literally hurt. There were sounds noises and explosions. I was unable to sleep for three days because of the hallucinations. On the fourth day I managed to sleep a fitful sleep some while constantly being woken up by the voices noises and sensations nagging at me. It’s torment. I was afraid to leave the house because I thought the world was ending. After a number of days I got the courage to leave the house and I began walking and hallucinating as I went. People, real people, were acting very strange jumping out in front of me and things like that. Later, I had a control panel that I used to do various things. I was casting out spirits from billboards TVs and car headlights. I could read people’s minds and I would also suggest things to them. Some people liked it and others didn’t. One lady refused to listen to my telepathy and even refused to turn her head to see her friends tapping on the bus window trying to get her attention. I hope people can understand a little what it’s like to be schizophrenic. I did many other miracles. Later, I had to learn how to master my mind taking control of it. If not, it was sheer torture. I had to literally rewire my brain. I had to change every habit of thought. I had to not believe what I was believing and I had to stop doing all those miracles. I reasoned that I am not the Holy Spirit to convince people of anything. Slowly, after several years, the hallucinations began to subside in conjunction with my conscious refusal to believe in them or even to take note of them. Now, there are people who take a cheap shot saying I never had schizophrenia because I beat it. I no longer have the symptoms associated with schizophrenia. I feel like I got over on everybody. I beat everyone and some people people seem to resent that. I’m no longer being tortured by schizophrenia. That’s what matters whether people believe me or not and whether doctors learn from me or not.

I’m at such a loss at the moment, i can’t afford a therapist so I’m stuck with trying to research what wrong with me. I relate to a lot of the problems listed, such as very minor visual hallucinations, i can physically feel someone tapping me or pressing into my skin, but nobody is there, I’m constantly afraid because I feel as though my closest friends and family members are plotting to unalive me or do horrible things to be, and it just strikes at random times, i can’t even trust my own father. Ive also struggled with getting my point across with words and more times than not it always leaves people confused because it just doesn’t make sense which makes me feel horrible. My mood is also extremely prone to changing in a split second. I can be happy one second and the next second im extremely agitated at everyone and anything and I tend to have sudden outbursts of anger. I also am terrified that everyone can read my mind so sometimes I have to just not think at all in fear that the person next to me can hear what I’m thinking. I also have very minor auditory hallucinations, such as someone walking my way, or when I lay down or when I zone out I can hear a voice very loud and clear, but after a second im able to tell that it was just in my head. All of this does cause me a lot of trouble in my every day life and it definitely hinders my happiness. Worst part is I always tell myself that I’m faking it, that I’m actually perfectly fine, which does mess with me and makes me very hesitant on opening up.

I am scared because I have been noticing symptoms like this for almost a year and it's only getting worse. The most recent hallucination I have been having is that I constantly think I feel the smell of my own lungs and every time I start feeling it I am panicking a lot. Another type of hallucination I am seeing is random geometric figures, or a huge face just hanging in the middle of the room. Weird thing is that I realise this thing don't exist but I can't make it stop. Also my social life went down withing this year, I used to have a group of close friends in January and now it's Novermer and I've lost everyone, haven't talked to anyone of those people for 3 months now. I can't make myself go out and just enjoy something. Also I'm from Ukraine, so war also made a huge impact on me I think, even though I am safe now I can't stop being worried every time I hear the loud noise and these feelings change from extremely worried to not caring at all. Also my emotions are out of control, sometimes I can spontaneously laugh to myself, not because somethings funny, but because I feel this sudden burst of emotion that makes me do this. There's a lot more but I just don't know what to do, my mother is not supper supportive and I am scared to go to a specialist because what if I really have schizophrenia, she is going to believe it. And what if I don't have it, then it would be just a waste of money?

getting help is never a waste of money. just like going to a mechanic when your car isnt working properly. u may think its ur water pump but turns out its only ur thermostat, meaning its your job to notice you need help and go get it, not making a correct diagnosis. ITS ALWAYS BEST TO HAVE THE MOST ACCURATE INFORMATION ABOUT ANYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT PRESERVING AND PROTECTING- ESPECIALLY YOURSELF MIND BODY AND SOUL. i understand that you may feel frightened to hear bad news but u want to control the things within your control to get the outcome you desire, everything that isn't in your control you cannot effect in any way shape or form and thats ok because we are only human we are not gods. remember to try to enjoy life as much as humanly possible even tho i know it can be hard at times, impossible at others but WHENEVER IT IS POSSIBLE TO FEEL (EVEN IF ONLY A DROP IN AN OCEAN OF NEGATIVITY) ANY POSITIVE EMOTION - U DESERVE IT. MUCH LOVE I HOPE THIS HELPED YOU IN SOME WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like I'm having very early onset of schizophrenia, but I'm not sure. I have hallucinations, but they're always at night when I'm tired or just waking up. I've had them all; I've seen spiders, dream catchers, floating balls, that aren't there. I've woken up to feeling hands on me or tugging my pj's. I often wake up to the strong smell of urine, that dissappears after 30 seconds. The only thing that happens during the day is the auditory, but it's very rare. The most common is hearing my phone ringing when it isn't. Only, the other day I heard a man talking to me. Only for seconds and I couldn't make out what he was saying. It's the first time I've heard a voice. Does this sound like schizophrenia? I feel like I'm overreacting. EDIT: Thanks for some of the replies. I have something called Hynopompic Hallucinations. It's not harmful and no cure, but a relief to have an answer.

I have a 58 year old brother, whom we love dearly. He has Asperger's, anxiety, slight schizophrenia, and paranoia. He has become so pessimistic, it hurts immensely listening to him speak. We have gotten him help for decades, however there is nothing any professional can do for him. He never worked for someone (just cut grass himself) and never had a girlfriend (we took him to an escort finally in his late 20's because he insisted on it). He has never had any relationship with a lady. It's sad to hear him complain every minute of every day about how other have partners and good jobs and success, while he is a failure. His social skills are very limited, and he knows it too. He sometimes talks of suicide and meeting Jesus in an afterlife. When he was 12, he fell off a bicycle and suffered head trauma, and when he was born, he was stuck in the birth canal, so other than genetics, these accidents may have contributed to his mental illness. It is so heartbreaking to be a part of his life, knowing that there is a very limited amount of things I can do to help him, if any at this point. The stress and sadness is unbearable for me. What can I do for him? What happens to him when we die? We are not rich.

Ty for this I looked it up cos I oftentimes think I'm seeing things esp in the dark or where there are shadows. I get scared that things are just watching me and will attack me. Im still young but I just got so scared I looked this up and I'll bring it up to my parents tomorrow that maybe i should see a therapist again as I've been before bcos of panic attacks, depressive episodes and seweesaddle thoughts and terrible insomnia. I thought I was doing better but lately I've been seeing things and while I don't feel as sad these days I just feel very fearful and anxious like terrible things are going to happen and i think about it so much it has caused me to wonder if i actually want these things to happen. And that also scares me. This is long lol but tyvm

For the past 6 weeks my life has become a mess with what looks like tragedy on the horizon. My fiancee's delusions hit a peak and she flipped a light switch on our relationship, our wedding and our future. Little did I know her quirks were schizophrenia. She'll go on with her life thinking she's done the right thing. She'll also never have a beautifully successful love story in her life. And she's lost literally her only friend, choosing to forge a path without anyone to talk to or enjoy things with. I can't talk to her, i can't get her help. All I can do is try to survive (I'm mostly not wanting to.) I cling to less than 1% hope, facing a monumental challenge to regain all that's wonderful about her, and to be there for her as her best friend and future spouse. If I lose hope I'll lose my life and she'll go on without the one person who will be the most perfect for her. This illness/disorder is so horrible.

I want this to be cured, also when im typing this right now, my top left side of my brain hurts, I'm only 13, please tell me what kind of disease is this.

One important thing to remember about schizophrenia is that the medicine for it will do away with the positive symptoms of the condition, but not the negative. Also, certain medications for schizophrenia can make a person feel physically tired, especially in the morning, when they are usually taken. And also some can cause bad digestive problems, so you have to take medicine to counter these symptoms. These two bad side effects can really hamper your ability to work, either in the paid sector or the unpaid. Also, the negative effects of this illness can contribute to a sufferer not being able to work. The terrible stigma and discrimination that are associated with it are another contributing factor.

When I was little I remember that I used to see all the family photos mouths move like they were talking but no sound would come out. Then I would hear voices talking to me like. My mom would be in the other room and I can hear someone else say something and I would always ask her if she said something and she said she didn't. I few years go by it seemed like everything was normal the pictures would stop moving and the voices start. But then I would start to believe that there was cameras all over the house and people were out to get me. Now I'm having strange thoughts at the age of 21 nothing like harmful or anything just weird thoughts like people are in my house and the dog can hear my thoughts just stuff like that.. is this a sign that I have schizophrenia and go get seen by professionals?

This is strange but normal for schizophrenia I guess. Yes this is schizophrenia. What it sounds like is you started freaking out about the paranoia for someone spying on you because in your mind you were trying to figure out why you heard voices and why pictures moved and in all honesty that is a pretty normal reaction when you're running around wondering why the freak you're hearing things and seeing things. I used to always think there's no reason for why schizophrenia developed the paranoia part of the whole thing/started thinking someone was out to get them but I understand it now.

I had a psychosis about 5 years ago. When my Dad was watching TV in another room, i heard "i worship the devil." I then began hearing a wispering in my ear that i could not understand what it was saying. Whenever i watched a video on the phone, i would hear auditory hallucinations that were talking directly to me. I began thinking that they were subliminal messages. I did not know what schizophrenia or psychosis was during the time. I thought i had spiritual powers to hear the thoughts of people because of the auditory hallucinations. Around January 2020, i was hospitalized because of having suicidal thoughts. I began taking medication, and the auditory hallucinations went away. I learned that i was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. It was such a relief when the voices ended. I finally could understand what i went through. From time to time i have thoughts that people are judging me, but the bizarre delusions went away. I thank God for helping me. Im also thankful for those working in mental health. They really helped me get back to reality and find hope in life.

Help me, I don't know what is wrong with me, I'm afraid in faking, but I just want an answer to what I have or what I'm doing. I have anxiety and severe depression, but I fear I might have schizophrenia as well. I don't have hallucinations but sometimes I think I am someone else, who lives in a different world, and has different friends in my own story. I've been like this for years since I was a child where my daydreaming is non-stop and I'm delusional. Sometimes I feel so happy in my delusions that I just want to die because some part of me knows it's not real, but some other part of me thinks it's real and I start to become confused on what is reality and what is not. In a way I'm afraid that someday I won't know what's real and what's in my mind anymore (it's already happening slowly), even though I'd love to not deal with reality anymore. I just want to stop feeling sad about how I'll never be happy if my alter ego and fake friends aren't real. I don't think some of my daydreams are normal either, I sometimes get raped, always hunted down, killed, my friends killed, or I get to kill. Because of this some of my friends look at me like some kind of psychopath for the things I say and I don't know what to feel about it.

When I was about 14-15 years old, a friend of mine began to realize that I would experience psychosis. Eventually I was diagnosed with schizophrenia which for me included seeing and hearing things. But what I also have experienced throughout my entire life is delusions. I’ve always thought and I still do believe that I’m constantly being watched by an organization because I have underlying secrets even I don’t know about. I wear glasses. And whenever I get changed or shower, I always take off my glasses and face them away from me because I highly believe there’s a camera inside and I wouldn’t want to expose myself. And linked to this, I have a special friend. A close friend. And he knows I struggle with a lot of mental illness type things and most of the time I think he’s a government dude trying to calm me so I can be vulnerable so someone can control me. I have no clue who to reach out to at this point and I’ve been looking at these videos to help better understand myself.
