✅ What is schizophrenia?
The word "schizophrenia" is of Greek origin. It is a combination of the word "schizein", which means "split", and "phren", which means "mind". For this reason, schizophrenia is often equated with a split personality. In fact, however, it is a much broader concept that means a splitting of thoughts and feelings and a lack of coherence between them. Ultimately, this means a breakdown of personality, which leads to problems in everyday functioning. Schizophrenia means the inability to realistically assess reality. The patient is also unable to realistically evaluate himself. For this reason, he gradually begins to close himself in his own imaginary world and builds his own alternative world, which usually has little to do with the real world.
✅ What are the causes of schizophrenia?
So far, not all causes of schizophrenia are known. What is known is that it often affects many young people, because more than 60% of cases occur in people under 30 years of age. Genetic and biological factors are among the most important factors. If there is already a case of schizophrenia in the family, there is a high risk that other family members will also be diagnosed with this diagnosis. Psychological factors also play an important role. Excessive stress or traumatic life events can affect the mind and cause severe symptoms of the disease. Psychology is also influenced by environmental and social factors. Upbringing and environment affect mental health and can influence the development of schizophrenia.
✅ The most important symptoms of schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is associated with a very wide range of symptoms. Not every patient has to show all of them. The first symptoms are usually noticed by the relatives of the sick person, and they are not aware of it. Usually, these symptoms are ignored and the diagnosis is made when they are already severe. The first symptoms are usually disorders of affect and association. They mean that emotions become shallow, rigid, and their range is smaller. Association disorders, in turn, mean problems associating things with each other. Another symptom is ambivalence, which means heterogeneous feeling, experiencing and thinking. Schizophrenia is also often associated with autism, which consists in closing the patient in his own world and increasing withdrawal from the life of the environment. Unfortunately, you can also expect:
👉 social disorders,
👉 delusions,
👉 hallucinations,
that appeal to all the senses. Delusions and hallucinations can range from smells that are not there to visual hallucinations that can occur at any time of the day or night.
