She doesn’t need ‘help’ if you refer to her as ‘ill’ or having a ‘mental illness’ as if she needs to be fixed trust me she won’t be thankful for it. Just know two things: 1. Treat her like any other partner would treat their girlfriend. 2. Hallucinations can be fascinating they aren’t all scary. But there are a few... and they are terrifying let me tell you that. Be there and support her, don’t tell her they’re fake and all in her head. Just be there for her. And she will need space sometimes... a lot of it. Also if she’s having a paranoid fit, telling her she can trust you is a massive no no. It’s the worst thing you can do even if it seems like you’re helping because thoughts will be flying through her head so fast and she won’t know who to trust or what to do. The best thing to do in that situation is to let her have space. This is genuine advice I wish people would follow for me.

_"It's never a good idea to self diagnose"_ *Say it louder for the edgy preteens in the back*
@LittleLulubee6 жыл бұрын
Something serious like schizophrenia shouldn't be self-diagnosed. But it's totally appropriate to diagnose yourself with depression, anxiety, or OCD, for example.
@katiaolivares46916 жыл бұрын
@@LittleLulubee It was mainly a joke, but it IS complicated to diagnose yourself, not only because of the stigma but also because people is usually biased, specially people as susceptible to their own emotions as preteens. You may adknowledge you have symptoms but either way you MUST consult a specialist, not only to make sure but also to get the right treatment. Also, as a side note and I'm sorry if it comes off in a mean way, but I wouldn't really say some illnesses like anxiety or depression are less serious than schizophrenia. Every mental illness is hard to cope with in their own way.
@LittleLulubee6 жыл бұрын
Anxiety and depression are extremely hard to cope with sometimes and can be life threatening- I never claimed they can’t be serious. But they are way easier to diagnose and treat, (including self-diagnosis and self-treatment), than schizophrenia. And it’s not always necessary to see a specialist for those. Many people have done well without interference from the psychiatric community.
@catcroissant77006 жыл бұрын
Katia Olivares ah yes just continue to contribute to the the stigma of teens not coming out with depression due to fear of being labelled as "edgy". A good percentage of "edgy" pre-teens have serious issues. There will be the few odd attention seekers but most of them have actual struggles in life and often in their home. While self diagnosis is never 100% accurate sometimes it can give iniative to go to the doctor as well as making it easier to cope with emotions , making them more justifiable. I'd say I've had depression for a year or so. My family are emotionally abusive and my friends want me to go to the police , I used to cut and was isolated from everyone. I currently study psychology and know all the ins and outs about depression. But no all of that is invalid just because I'm a teenager so therefore I'm clearly just being "edgy". The level of ignorance in your comment , joke or not, is astounding.
@Itsvictoriasandovalmanagement6 жыл бұрын
Cat Croissant I agree. I struggle and basically self diagnosed because I’m afraid of what my family might say but it’s made me strive to find healthy alternatives to better me in those areas. I get called edgy a lot and I hate it. This just make me more afraid to be vocally about it, which I want to be because I want to help others. I don’t wanna be called an edgy teen because simple I’m still a teen

I have a friend whose mother has schizophrenia. He and his brothers struggle with it on a daily basis. Her family pretty much abandoned her when she started to show signs of the condition, so all she has left are her husband and children. Imagine how difficult it must be for a child to deal with a parent who often displays erratic behaviour. My friend worries that one day he might develop schizophrenia, but unlike me who takes it as a more grim thing, he seems more comfortable with it. It's like something that is part of his life already, so if he did develop it, it would not be sooo bad. I think he has a better understanding of what are people with mental illnesses are really like... and knows that no matter how crazy the person can be, they still have a very much human and loving side to them. I personally think that people with mental illnesses are really misunderstood by others, which only makes their lives more difficult than they already are. This friend told me that despite all the weird stuff his mum says and does sometimes, she really loves him and his brothers. She already saved his life, and sometimes gets sad because she feels alone and thinks nobody likes her. That's when he and his father come and try to bring some comfort to her. I don't think just anyone has the patience and empathy to deal with schizophrenics on a daily basis like that.
@KiiCopz6 жыл бұрын
Taina oliveira My mother is schizophrenic, too. Her treatment was kind of an on/off-thing (She started to show signs when I was 11, I'm 20 now.) She took her medication for a couple years, but slowly stopped because of how fatigued they made her. Her symptoms soon started to show up again and honestly it is so exhausting to witness her 24/7 angry and extremly toxic behaviour. I'm not saying every schizophrenic acts like that, but my mother (as long as i can remember) always had a pretty stubborn and kind of narcistic character. Only makes matters worse because she is in denial about her health and believes all the garbage she stirrs up. (Like saying my father is a terrorist or that she is queen elizabeths daughter.) Yes, one way or another you are forced to cope with it, but it will leave its marks sooner or later. Especially when you are being exposed to it at a young age. I am going through depression myself right now, struggle with my social anxiety and of course that clashes badly with my mother. I already seeked out professional help for myself and a lot of things got explained to me in that matter. Sadly there is not much you can do since german law is so stupid but whatever. She was worse than now couple years ago, with all the horrible things that illness made her do. Now it's mostly just a verbal matter. (though most of the time she just shouts at the tv.) Sorry for my horrible english lol

My grandmother suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Since she was a little girl she suffered from feelings of being followed and distrust for people. It got worst as she got older, and unfortunately she's isolated herself from my mom (her eldest daughter) for years so I barely know her. I got to spend some time with her this past year and over-all she seemed pretty stable, though she has refused treatment for religious reasons. She did believe her upstairs neighbor was following her through the house and recording her movements during the day. I felt kind of bad for the man above her, he was a college professor and wanted to be friendly with her, but he didn't understand her delusions or her mistrust for him.

I started having schizophrenic symptoms when I was just 17 years old. My head voices would often give me unreasonable commands and then threaten to beat me if I didn’t obey. It got so bad that I threatened suicide and scared all of my friends and family members. My main ways of coping with schizophrenia are medication and reducing stress, just like this video said. But I also like to listen to music a lot. My anthem for recovering from schizophrenia was “Never Blame the Rainbows” by The Moody Blues. I still cherish that song today. I’m 33 years old now and I’ve made tons of progress ever since seeking help. For those who are suffering, you’re not alone and there’s a great future ahead of you.

@daniellehoreau77216 жыл бұрын
Yes, I experience halucinations. I will tell you that I call them night creatures. This is not becuase they come out at night. That is because they are like things that come out of nightmares. Also, it is easier to see in darker places. Complete darkness does not scare me. Only with some light can I see. The part that makes me upset are day terrors. It's very unnatural unnatural bending and twisting and moving of nouns. The spirits make me sad, or angry...or even laughing. They are not always my friend or enemy but it's difficult to talk or think or write with ideas sometimes. Control is small but it's not always an emergency. Medicine is easier but not always sometimes medicine is worse. I am prescribed sleeping pills to take as needed because sometimes the spirits will whisper things or the night creatures are naughty. I was not birthed like this but I do remember my mother being upset about "my friends" and I was "weird". Mother used to always be angry or laugh at me. I was not given a diagnosis until high school. I tried to kill myself and had some episodes. I went to the mental hospital four times in high school.

I was almost diagnosed with Schizophrenia, about 4 months ago. I began hearing voices, door knocks and just auditory hallucinations in general and then I began getting tactile hallucinations. The tactile, even began 'evolving'. It used to be a sensation of a spark, if you want, and then one day, it literally felt like insects. "Luckily" this was the cause of LSD abuse and major HPPD and maybe even a mixture, of a Brief Psychotic Disorder, due to environmental conditions. *NEVER BEEN BETTER SINCE IT CEASED :D*
*I'm pretty glad that you cleared up a lot of common misconceptions about the disorder!* also, i hate it when commenters write 'early' when a KZbin video has just been uploaded. You cannot be early to a KZbin video, early means to come BEFORE something is planned or an event. You cannot watch the video BEFORE it has been uploaded, therefore, you cannot be early to a KZbin video, no matter when it was posted.
@chromberries73296 жыл бұрын
Electro.Dash.666 X not really. early is also relative to the time in which the video was uploaded. if you comment "early" when a video has only been uploaded for 56 seconds, yes, you're early. you commented before lots of others possibly, and you also commented less than a minute after the video was posted (what if the video stays up for 10 years!?) so yes you can be early. it's not a cut and dry definition. there's more than one.

I suffer from schizophrenia for three years. Delusions and hallucinations are hell but I would say the worst thing about it are the negative symptoms - depression, demotivation and anhedonia. I'm sure my best friend has schizophrenia. His dad has it, and lately he's been exhibiting exaggerated signs of having it too. He firmly believes that his older brother has bugged their whole house and is constantly listening to him. He thinks his brother is bullying and tormenting him. Although I am sure there is a tinge of truth to that, as that's just what siblings do, I do not think his brother is as malicious as he makes him out to be. I've hung out with him a couple times, and there's no way in hell he has bugged the whole house, at the very least. My friend has always been withdrawn from extraneous social interactions for the four years I've known him, and lately it's only been making his life worse, as his paranoia is strengthening. I would like to get him help but I don't want to meddle with his life and his family's life. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should even do? He doesn't even recognize that he has a serious problem. I've given him the same pep talks over and over again and he always says he understands what I'm saying, he knows what his problems are, but he never makes any progress; he always regresses to square one. I don't know what to do- I don't even think there's anything I cAN do, so, if anyone else has had a similar experience, please, share it if you're willing.
@limerence83655 жыл бұрын
Sorry this is late. I'm no expert but I'll try to help. If you're trying to show your friend has a problem you also need to motivate them to overcome it. My friend had an abusive boyfriend. I couldn't just tell her to dump him because she cared for him and would get mad at me. Instead I tried played it sneaky. Her boyfriend was feeding off her anxiety and loneliness to manipulate her. It didn't help that she wasn't liked by anyone in the year. So I did the opposite. I boosted her confidence. I told her what to say to herself whenever she felt worthless. I went out of my way to comfort her and make her feel wanted. It worked. She became happier. She stopped self harming. She dumped his ass finally. Me and my friend gave her and others confidence to become friends with her. So for your friend, make him feel comfortable. Reassure him and show him his brother is not out to get him. Try to get him surrounded by people in a comfortable manner. Talk to his family about worries you have. But whatever you do don't go behind is back. Never lie to a paranoid person or involve yourself in their life in any way that he's not aware of. I showed my friend who thought no one liked her that she was liked. If your friend is paranoid than show him he has no reason to be.
If your friends father has schizophrenia, then he definitely has a chance of developing it. Schizophrenia has some of the strongest genetic links of any mental disorder.

I was diagnosed with DID and Schizophrenia along with many other things. I hear voices, see things and even feel things. It has left me paranoid and freaked out multiple times. I've had times where I would sleep in my mom's room because I was scared over things I was seeing. I didn't want to be alone. I've adjusted to it all and learned to handle it on my own. I even have a cat that helps comfort me. 😊❤🐈🐈

I've been diagnosed with Schizophrenia about a few years ago, and the issues I encounter following my mental-illness is actually improving, on a fluctuative level, but still getting better. It's also odd that I also have depression and anxiety, and combined with Schizophrenia... It's like: well, you could probably see what I may experience, haha. And yes, just thank you. I'm learning a lot more about myself, and am glad that you are helping to spread awareness! ^^

Fun fact… one of Albert Einstein’s sons was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Eduard (Tete) Einstein was diagnosed in the early twenties of his life and quickly checked into a mental institution. He protested he wants insane, which he was, but he knew how to handle it, which was true. No one believed him. So eventually he really did become insane. Many photos taken of him show him absent-minded and sad. Institutions were not the place he needed to be.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 4 years old. When I was little I thought that was how everyone worked until people started calling me crazy. I’ve had visual hallucinations my whole life. Even though my chances were quite rare, I’m so happy I got it as a child than a teenager or adult. I became used to it by the end of elementary school. I am now 16 and have more delusions than hallucinations. Psychosis itself is so interesting 🤔🤔

I came across this video, and clicked on it due to me being Schizophrenic. I just want to say thanks for pointing out that we often isolate ourselves. Although I know it's sad to admit,but it made me feel a tiny bit better about myself. I know that the small amount of family that I interact with doesn't understand me. I'm young, disabled and get SSI. I can't go out of my apartment more than once a month- and for 99% of the months, I never leave my room. I won't stay out in the living room with my fiancé for more than a few minutes. I have to be in my room to feel secure. I've accepted how I am. I'm grateful to have my fiancé in my life to help me. I just wish that my family would stop talking behind my back,"Oh, ever since they were young, they would never leave the basement. To this day, they don't leave their own room in their own apartment! Their relationship must be awful if that's the case." When my relationship is beyond loving and healthy. It just hurts sometimes to know I'll never be seen as "normal" by my family. I guess that's why I never go out of my way to see them. I know I live a life that most would see as unfulfilling. I don't get out much. I can't indulge in my hobbies much, as my SSI doesn't provide much more than my rent. But, I have what I need, and I view that as it's okay to simply be content. More commonly than not, I sometimes think that maybe the answer would be to rid me of myself-- to end my life. But I do my best to keep my mind in this room; Every memory I have with my fiancé is the only thing keeping me here. It's still hard to not let the idea of death tempt my mind-- but I'm still here. That's what matters, I guess. Sorry for venting in a random Comment Section. Recent times have been harsh, and it's been getting harder and harder to distract from. Sorry.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm also a young schizophrenic that is jobless. My family is my only support system and I feel bad for mooching off them. I feel like I need to provide for myself. Well...okay first thing first, schizophrenia is a very serious mental disorder and you shouldn't self diagnose like...ever. Don't stress yourself out by doing too much looking up online and think that you might have it. Just don't over think on yourself and act like you're going nuts. You're not. But if you're being serious such as...seeing things that aren't actually there and really believing in voices that aren't true, then get some help.

Always discuss the effects of medication with your doctors so they know if they need to reduce or increase amounts or change it altogether. And, like the video said, don't self diagnose.

I have been on seroquel for a little over a year now for BPD. After a ton of research and drug concoctions, antidepressants and antipsychotics have a very low success rate. Too little too late for me. I just went to my primary physician about manic episodes I have been having. I can’t fall asleep even if up the dose And start hallucinating bad. Not the fun kind either. Absolutely terrifying. Apparently I’m too messed up in the head to be off of it now. I’ll stay up for days. I’m running off 4 hours of sleep in 3 days currently. They had started me off on the strongest meds available and now he’s wanting to add to it. He tried to argue with me that seroquel prevents that from happening. I should have shared my concerns about the medication but his confused look on what to do got me shook up. Seroquel effect the cones in our eyes. Idk the exact science on it. It’s an antipsychotic. Isn’t that kind of contradictory to say it wouldn’t cause hallucinations? This office argued to keep me on an anti- anxiety medication because it gave me high blood pressure (not benzos) I had to get aggressive. Time to get a new MD

My boyfriend is Schizoaffective Bipolar Type.....it's very hard but I can see the signs before they get too bad. The problems is when he is in a delusional state, there is nothing I can do, he believes his thoughts so vehemently that he starts to think I am "one of them". The main problem I have is when I sign a petition for him to get help, the law does not require the hospitals to call me and they just let him go...we have been through this more than once now. The latest incident ending up with him breaking into a neighbors house while is a state of psychosis and he was beaten with a baseball bat. I tried to get him help for three weeks before that incident but no one called me...they just let him go or sent him to an alcohol rehab...because when he's in that state he thinks that's where he should go. It's ridiclous that these hopsital workers do not call the person on the metal health petition...even when they have given them all the paperwork and medications lists, and just listen to what they say. I am thankful my neighbor didn't have a gun. If he did, my love would be dead and not in a hospital.
