this is a pretty bad movie. first of all they used the wrong materials of drywall. it should be green drywall. green drywall is water resistant. second, they placed the kerdi matt vertically while it should be placed horizontally and overlapping eachother.

Most likely explanation is that the demo focusses on the application of the product rather than the setup behind it. As for the positioning of the kerdi matt, both are approved methods. Sometimes, applying it vertically on the wall is just easier depending on the room setup.
