Water can leak at the transition piece going from the wall to the floor. It would be better to install the transition piece before the wall so it is overlapped from the top. Like doing shingles you want to do all u can to keep water on top. You would not install flashing on top of a shingle because it can leak even if sealant was applied. So why would you take the chance here. Have experienced leaks caused by doing this in this application already. On this video during water test that the thunder is already wicking the water. This is what causes water leaks later after tile install. Best solution I have found is to use a water proofing method over all joints prior to tile installation

why is the long corners schluter put on prior to the wall? Will not the water go behind the tile seeping behind the bottom corner put on last. I have done this several times with this system and I still always put down in this order. Floor, corners and then the walls so there is no "natural drainage" down behind something. Or is there still a chance of capillary action ? I would like some feedback on this

Hi Nick! When KERDI is installed with a 2" overlap, water will not be able to penetrate and cause any issues, regardless of the order in which the KERDI and KERDI-BAND are applied, whether "shingled" or not. Hope this helps!

Why do people still torture themselves with these multi-step jigsaw puzzles? I have used several tile-ready custom fiberglass pans and wall panels. Whole thing goes in in a couple hours, and far fewer potential failure points. Kerdi seems laborious and archaic in comparison.

Weird that they have you doing the wall first! As someone who has done a lot of roofing and almost every other home exterior, and for the past 15 years flooring and showers exclusively, I have to say that I always work from bottom up when waterproofing, meaning that I do the pan waterproofing then put the wall waterproofing on top of that, an would advise everyone to do the same. Never trust a joint lapped the wrong way to be water tight just because it is sealed, I don't care how much the overlap is.

I’ve installed everything and planning to do a water test tomorrow night but I just can’t understand one step and how it creates a waterproof barrier. When doing the shower pan I put in each of the corners. I’ve cut the Kerri band to put between but I don’t understand how it is waterproof without overlapping. Looks like there is a small gap between the corners and the band in your video. Is this correct? Aren’t those areas where water can travel? Do I need to overlap it or use the Kerdi caulk? There is thin set but that’s not waterproof.

Why use a butt-seam at 5:30 when you could just overlap the two full sheets of Kerdi-membrane like you did on the other wall? Are you just demonstrating the use of the band if for some reason it's impossible to just easily/simply overlap the full sheets upon one another and skip the whole need for the kerdi-band process?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, we are just showing the two options in this video. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the butt-joint method might be preferred when installing smaller tiles, such as mosaics, because there will be a little less build-up. Hope that helps!
@amattson6578
@amattson6578 2 жыл бұрын
Why not overlap and join the seams together with kerdi band in a process that water never runs directly into a seam? For example..first membrane the shower pan. Then apply kerdi band and corners to the pan and wall board. Then membrane the wall over the kerdi band so the seams are never in direct contact with the direction of water flow. The schluter method is putting too much faith in the technology of how the kerdi band adheres to the membrane through the thinset during the curing process. This process could result in failure given the fact that thinset isnt waterproof and its possible theres not a 100% connection of the overlapping membranes. Installing it in the overlap method I stated in beginning of this post takes out any possibility of water flowing directly into any seam.

@amattson6578
@amattson6578 9 ай бұрын
@@nickroussain317 yes no direct seam contact. I call it the shingle method. Shingles overlap so water sheds over the shingles. Same principle here. Obviously the technology guarantees full waterproof either way but for me as the installer I like having extra piece of mind knowing that any water moving towards the drain will not run directly into a seam but rather flow over the seams since they overlap from the top down like shingles. Its still the same technology so the manufacturer should still warranty the product as long as youre still using the mortar they recommend and doing the manufacter recommended overlap which is usually like 2"

Schluter-Systems North America as a plumber things can and will go wrong. I've seen it. This is not a perfect world and I am not necessarily asserting that the Kerdi will fail. Water leaks are inevitable and evil. Why not reverse this process. Shower pan first, overlap with edge and corner treatment, then walls. Any flooring or walls will eventually flex and crack. Let the moisture barrier in behind overlap so beads of water will flow inward to the drain not outward to the studs. Think about how shingles and valleys are treated on your roof and duplicate the logic in your beautiful shower.

With KERDI waterproofing membrane, the sequence of membrane installation can vary- what's important is that a minimum 2" (50 mm) overlap is maintained at all joints and proper connection to the KERDI-DRAIN is established. It doesn't actually matter which layer of KERDI goes down first in order for a waterproof seal to be made and continue to be water tight. So, although shingle lapping of the KERDI membrane isn't necessary, it is an acceptable option for any shower installation. 🍊

I just finished this install, this video is so misleading, that is not thinset they’re using, it looks like joint compound. Thinset is way harder to apply over a large wall area, so hard in fact I wish I never bought this stupid system. Hi David! Schluter® -Systems does not require taping joints between drywall panels before installing Schluter®-KERDI/KERDI-DS. However, if local code requires taping joints, latex based primer must be applied over the taped joints prior to installing the KERDI/KERDI-DS membrane. Joint compound can be water soluble and should be protected from the moisture in the thin-set mortar used to install KERDI/KERDI-DS. Hope that helps!

@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Close, but not quite. 🙂 We are saying that all waterproofing connections with KERDI, KERDI-BAND, KERECK corners, and/or valve seals need a 2" overlap, however, the corners are longer than 2", so the KERDI-BAND can be brought back a little in that area so the strips don't overlap each other. This will still allow for the required 2" overlap. Hope that clears it up!

@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, Either way is fine. It generally just depends on user preference. Some like to overlap the KERDI as the go, whereas others prefer to butt join the KERDI and then cover with the KERDI-BAND. One practical reason for using the KERDI-BAND in some instances is when a small mosaic is being installed over the seam. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the build-up at the seam would be slightly less. Hope this helps!

Is there a specific reason to install the drain before the tray if I don't have access to the plumbing from below? @schlutersystems1

Hi there, since KERDI-BAND is half the thickness of KERDI, covering a butt joint with KERDI-BAND will a be little less build-up than a lap seam, which may be helpful when installing small mosaics. Otherwise, either method may be used and it's just a matter of preference. Hope this helps!

Hi Pam, we don't have any specific information as to whether those products are safe for marine life. However, our Safety Data Sheets are all available on our website. You can find them on the product page under "Downloads". They may be helpful. Also, since all of our shower components will be encapsulated within the tile assembly, you may want to focus on the suitability of the tile and grout that you'll be using in your application, as they would be the exposed products. Hope this helps!

Wouldn't it be better to install the floor pan first, and then the wall sheets with a 2" overlap on the floors, so any water getting behind tile would drain down and out over the overlap, rather than relying on the band joint? Or better yet, install the floor flush to the studs/bottom plate, then drywall, then Schluter wall sheets? Then do the corners, but none of the wall to floor banding? Would this be allowable if I choose to do it that way?
@schlutersystems1

Hi there ! There is no rules on what to install first as long as there is always a minimum overlap of 2'' of the Kerdi membrane. The Kerdi corners are a necessity thought as the band or overlapping won't waterproof the corners to 100%. Hope that helps

@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven. The reason we are showing the butt joint with KERDI-BAND over it is that there are a couple of situations where this method would be preferred over the overlap method. The main reason is that the KERDI-BAND is thinner than the KERDI membrane, so a seam like this would be beneficial in reducing build-up for cases where smaller tiles, such as mosaics are used. Another reason for using a butt joint could be if that layout works better to reduce the total with of the KERDI membrane used by maybe 6"-8" in some showers. This could come in handy if there is more KERDI-BAND on hand than there is KERDI membrane. Either way, we like to show all of the options so you can choose what works best for you in each application.

Hi Melvin! Good question! The thin set mortar is not waterproof. If the water penetrates the grout and get's to the thin set it will reach the KERDI membrane and go no further. And then eventually, it just evaporates back out through the grout lines. No worries!

I don't understand why all the parts that get applied in an order that seems to be backwards. If water were to get under any part it will stay under forever. you example starts from the top down basically. Why don't you start at the drain and work your way up installed the pieces so the higher pieces fall on top of the next going down.
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! The sequence of membrane installation can vary provided that a minimum 2" (50 mm) overlap is maintained at all joints and proper connection to the KERDI-DRAIN is established. Also, top-over-bottom or shingle laps of the membrane are not required. So, It does not matter which layer of KERDI goes down first in order for a waterproof seal to be made.

Tar paper is not recommended to use in conjunction with the Schluter Shower System. Just like a traditional PVC or rubber liner installation, there may be alternatives to using the Schluter Shower System. Schluter Shower Systems are an integrated family of products and are designed and engineered specifically to work cohesively to create a sealed system. Hope this helps!

Can I ask why you would use corner and seems on the outside and not the inside?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Since KERDI membrane is installed over the solid backing down to the subfloor and the provided shower tray is waterproof, the seams of the outside perimeter and corner seams of the shower tray must be sealed to create a fully waterproof and vapor tight enclosure. By installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK inside corners over the pre-sloped shower tray, these components prevent moisture disseminating below the top of the tray; therefore, installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK corners underneath the tray is not necessary as moisture will not travel to the substrate. Can I install without pan and use the wall membrane instead for the bottom of the shower and then use grout to slope to the drain?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Apologies for the delay... The options for sloping a tiled shower floor to the drain are a KERDI-SHOWER-TRAY or a Portland cement mortar bed. The sloped mortar bed would need to be installed prior to the KERDI membrane so it wall be waterproofed on top and the water would slope to the drain and not saturate the mortar bed. The KERDI on top of the mortar bed would also continue up the walls in accordance with our Shower Systems Installation Handbook to create a completely waterproofed and properly sloped installation from the shower head to the drain. Neither grout or thin-set would be appropriate materials for creating a slope for the shower floor.
