How to create a shelf in a niche

I just used a piece of marble tile as my shelves that way it was finished top and bottom doesn't have to be two layers thick and no grout line and I just set it as I was setting my tile and didn't bother with the metal but the metal is a nice touch for the shelf

It seems we should assume the finish is like the corners… unfortunately none of your videos currently have even an image, let alone tutorial. It would be helpful to see the actual pull out shelf approach too, not just a quick verbal suggestion that is a little confusing.

Can the sandwich approach be accomplished with the rondec such that the round profiles don't meet awkwardly?

Hi there! It may be possible to do it with the Stainless Steel RONDEC, but you'd have to try a sample to see if you like it. The other RONDEC profiles have integrated grout spacers, so I'm not sure if that would look right, although, you could possibly grout in between and that could be okay. You don’t need the metal edging. You can use bull nose tile to finish, but it’s not as clean looking imo

I showed this video to our tile installers and they attempted to replicate the two tile method for the shelf., however, they used a different profile which has a 1/16th lippage, so the niche shelf holds water. They are insisting that this is normal. Is it?

Something looks fishy there with the niche in kerdi board. Looks like they covered the whole niche with kerdi membrane, overlapping the seams, then cut out the portion of kerdi membrane that covered the niche. Keeps them from having 2 layers of kerdi band at the corners.

Can you buy the Schluter shelf seperate from the niche? I want to do a custom sized niche so that I end up on a tile grout line so was going to wrap in kerdi.. but wanted to add a shelf

Hi Rich. We don't sell our shelves separately from our niches, but you can use a piece of KERDI-BOARD to build your shelf (it's what our niches are made of anyway!). Yes, the KERDI-BOARD-SN can be used in conjunction with a cementitious backer unit or any of the other approved solid backing materials listed in the Schluter-Shower System Installation Handbook for use with KERDI membrane.

Ah ok, yes the solid profiles shown on this video was the Schiene-Step and Reno-T. actually you are doing it wrong. The sides tiles under / above the shelf should be cut in an angle for the correct slope, and that will give you a perfect fit to the glass shelf

Hi Jacob, thanks for watching! That is definitely one option to create slope beneath the DECO-SG. Remember, very little slope is needed for the water to sheet off of the shelf.

But this all seems a lot easier when you conveniently have one piece of tile that supports the shelf and make it easier to pop in place. I want to see this same video with mosaic tile in the back of the niche please!!! Would you ever recommend pre-tiling the inside of the niche and then installing it?

Ugly. This is not how skilled tile installers make niches. A skilled tile setter uses mitres and epoxy. Schluter has nice products, but the niches are more suited for amateurs than pros. Top level tile nstallers can mitre everything. They don't use metal tracks, tile edge, or even jambs
