Oh that's so neat, I'm glad they put those leftover pigments to good use!

This paint is just perfect for a monochromatic study. The blue granulation would add just enough interest without distracting from the over all composition.

It could make some really beautiful mixes and colour separations. It's kind of poetic a beautiful colour made from their leftovers.

I have not one, but two tubes on their way to me...😂. I saw it used in another video and fell in love. I missed it at Jacksons but found it at Wet Paint in the US. Also saw recently that St. Louis Art Supply also has it...for now.

I've been mixing up whatever's left on my palette after painting and dumping it in a pan. I call it Nat's grey (:. I think it's like this random grey but at a personal scale (also, free paint! and an easy way to create a neutral that matches my palette).

I already ordered this paint (hope it gets here on Monday... and as it's after midnight here, I guess I mean today 😆), because the idea of all the leftover colours mixed together sounded amazing, and after seeing the colour I was sold. But I have to say, after seeing your video, I can barely categorize this colour as grey.😅 I ordered it aware that I might not like the colour (art shop swatches are never correct), but this came as a wonderful suprise. This weird, a bit shiny I think, mix of colours just brings a smile to my face. Can't wait to use it as a speciality colour! ✨ Thank you for the video! 😁😊

I am thinking since quite a while of buying the liquid charcoal. Could never push me over the edge to really do it. Seeing your swatch I instantaneously reconsidered and ordered two tubes Random Grey instead. Now I know why i waited so long... And being a temporal thing just adds to the fun. And you're right about always finding new colours.

I really like this idea. I can't decide whether it's kinda greenwash-y or not, but the grays are always so pretty and I could see them shine in monochromatic paintings especially.

For people who want to work with monochrome then this is a bonus. Something you cannot achieve by diluting black or by just mixing a couple of pigments on your palette. And because you have a whole tube of it great for doing a series of work. If you think you will need more than a tube then get more if you can…. Hoping to get a tube for myself, as monochrome is definitely something I am using more, but consistency of mid grey tone is hard to achieve and I do not really like most grey watercolours, but I can see from you sample I would like this. It would be interesting to see it highly magnified! And to do a lightfastness testing on it…

this year's grey is so lovely! I hope they'll continue from here on out, and eventually we might get to see a Random Grey compilation comparison of how they might look different over the years.

I thought Random Grey was made from pastel offcuts? The idea is very good. I like how they are using waste products rather than throwing them away. And the fact that the grey will be different every year gives buyers something to look forward to. It’s such a neat idea to make a special edition product without consuming more resources.

On Yupo? That's interesting :D
@LonitaFraser2 жыл бұрын
@@EveBolt I know it's a bit dicey in the after-time, having to make sure the thing never gets wet or touched, given it's Yupo and all, but I LOVE the way heavy water use with watercolour on Yupo works out. It doesn't cauliflower the way things do on paper, it leaves smooth water lines, and if you manipulate the yupo/water while its drying, you can get sets of waterlines that are reminiscent of smooth tree rings. It's fab. :)

It’s a great idea but not knowing the pigments means the lightfastness will never be known without tests etc. fun for sketchbooks. I want to make my own random grey mix now

Most of schminckes catalogue is relatively light-fast and since it's a grey a component loosing it's vibrancy shouldn't affect to overall color too much

There seems to be a weird bug on the site at the moment, a lot of discontinued colors and sets are visible but out of stock, with no restock date. I think green Porphyry is one of these, but the YInMn is real! :)

Hahah they are selling us their palette dirt, swept up off the warehouse floor, as "limited edition!" They are so very extra. This is perfect for whoever buys that ridiculous "Hordam watercolor wheel" that's almost $1000, that would clearly be horrible to paint out of, and how can they even justify that price for a ridiculous metal and plastic holder.
@GingahSnapsArt2 жыл бұрын
The salvaged colors are actually coveted, especially within acrylic and oil communities. Each being a snapshot of what pigments were most popular at that time (which colors were made most by the manufacturer). Since Schmincke has been releasing multiple super granulating paints recently - this Random Grey being extremely granulating shows that. You don't need to buy it if you don't like it. (: I agree with you, the wheel is very impractical and silly. But salvaged colors actually are really useful and neat. They show a history you can't see otherwise
@waymire012 жыл бұрын
So they are selling mud... as a special edition. SMH Just goes to show you can literally sell anything if you have the right advertising.
@EveBolt2 жыл бұрын
It's not mud! It's surplus that might've ended up in a landfill, or wasting away at the back of a warehouse. This way, we get something fun to use in our paintings :)
@kmeldrom69322 жыл бұрын
it’s kinda like the eco-friendly paints I think … they use additional leftovers from processing other colors instead of “digging” additional pigment. So it saves some material from the dump. I hope.

@@EveBolt It's literally no different than someone asking you if you want the leftovers on their mixing palette... but telling you it's special and charging a premium for it. You don't even know if it's lightfast or toxic because you have no idea what's in it.

Ok Eve, here’s a second comment because I’m laughing … this is NOT helping my no-buy-22! 😂🌺😂. The sale I regret not jumping on was Roman Szmal, but I bought *ahem* a few anyway. And I just labeled, sorted and put them all in numerical order 🤨🫤🤭 … not how RS works. So, that’s on my list, lol. I seriously wish he would label the pans. That’s such a task and literal pain to endure before painting. My hands would appreciate it, and he could use it as a selling point. Consider the average age of his customer is maybe 40? Ohhh yeah … labels are good ☺️ I digress … I kept it to 2 tubes of this lovely color - it’s basically palette dirt - which is usually pretty in some way, imo. Use them up on blank sheets. Toning them. Had others in my cart but talked myself down, mostly because I couldn’t figure out how much you need to spend for free shipping lol. I’ve enjoyed these videos. Heads ups (?) are great 🌺
