We've had some many different Butler Trombone models coming through the shop over the past few months it has been hard to keep up and while we have had the opportunity to spend time with the Butler small bore tenors and bass trombone the one eluding us was their C10 large bore tenor! While sharing many of the sound and response attributes of it's small and larger siblings the C10 has some unique characteristics all it's own and has the potential of providing the nuanced response and timbre that one would want from a custom-level large bore! Take a listen and let us know what you think!

Keith, appreciate your discussing why you pick a specific mouthpiece to match to the horn on reviews. Thanks. Nice sound.

I have an older C10 and a JJ model. I love the light weight, and not having to worry about dents and dings. I also play outdoor gigs in cold weather, and it is great not having metal on my neck. The only downside is the slide is rather finicky. I find myself using the cleaning rod OFTEN. I believe the problem is condensation. The carbon fiber slide doesn't seem to like moisture. I just use a small amount of the Yamaha slide stuff that everyone uses. David Butler does push the cream that they sell (I forget the name). I only tried it once, but didn't seem to add any value to me. As long as I keep it dry, it is happy. The water makes is sluggish. I just ordered the bass bone. Mostly because as I am getting older, I appreciate the light weight both for carrying it and playing. People ask me about the sound. I would say the sound is the same as a traditional brass bone. Prior to the Butlers, I played King 2b/3b and a Bach 50 bass bone. I can't compare the bass bone yet, but I really don't notice any difference in sound. The outer slide is crazy light, which I like better. But a friend played it and he thought it was too light. Different strokes. I also played a friends Lemondrop, and think I prefer that to the JJ model. I bought the JJ used, so I am thinking about changing the slide, but it is $1800 just for the slide, so I haven't gone that route yet.

I have been using a Butler slide on my Bach 42BO for reasons of arthritis. It helps a lot. I have found that using the Butler waxing method is fantastic - with the drill and all. I also use the cleaning rod often. Just today I found that using the drill and shop towel with no new wax restored the wax effect (I did go ahead and re-wax after that). Looks and sounds like a great horn! I've only ever played on Yamahas though

I'm really interested in these horns, but I have pretty spindly hands and those wide Bach-style handslides are so awkward for me to hold. Are the other slides like the dual-bore version shaped differently or are they all the wide style?

Butler actually offers both their dual-bore and .547” straight bore handslides in a narrow (88H-type) width, as well as the wide (Bach-type) width. If you would be interested in chatting further feel free to reach out at tromboneshop@schmittmusic.com :)

I believe the Lemondrop has a dual bore slide, and it is an option on the Bass bone as well. I ordered it for my new one.
