Hey Kyle! great job on these videos and it's wonderful so see the sounds of my generation still being "hip" haha I've been a session player since the early 80's and I had several BIG Bradshaw racks with truly all the goodies back then. I've done a lot of albums together with the legends of "schmo", Landau, Lukather, Huff, Thompson, Pierce etc etc...and still love and use those sounds weekly on sessions....THEY ARE BACK!! :) Once the plugin versions of all the best ones started coming I slowly built a full plugin version of my rack and it sounds amazing. Eventide makes an amazing H-3000 where you fully get those sounds but without the noise...also a very big difference from the physical racks because they were very noisy. On the plugin you can still do the Michael Thompson trick of delaying the chorus on the micropitch patch so you get. modulating stereo delays = AAAAARGH :D UAD has a great plugin of the real Tristereo chorus. Relab makes top class reverbs including a Lexicon 480 that has the PCM patches with circular delays...and of course stunning reverbs. Wave alchemy has a great PCM 60 plugin that has some of the classic PCM 70 sounds also... Keep it up and make it stereo :D

Wow that's a great story! Thank you for sharing. I've been meaning to check out relab and alchemy but have been so happy with vintage verb. Will have to get them on sale. I have been a big fan of 80s music my whole life but was more into hair metal /shrapnel shred for a long time. Then when I started working with Revv 6 years ago I befriended Shawn Tubbs & he was a big catalyst for me digging further into the session nerd world.

@@kylekarich Awesome, the video where you explain your signal chain and how to use compression etc. helped me get so much closer to that lush 80's clean tone! I use almost exclusively plugins and you are one of the only channels that also incorporates plugins instead of only expensive (real) amps, modellers etc.

@@SessionGold I love my Revvs & my pedalboard but I don't have the budget to also go acquire a bunch of my other dream gear so I think using plugins which most people have access to might be helpful :)

@@kylekarich Yeah definately! If I may do a suggestion: maybe you can make some videos where you step-by-step recreate some cool songs/solo's from Lukather, Landau, Huff etc. using plugins and/or amps,/modellers? Personally I would find that very helpful, thanks anyway for the content!
@kylekarich
@kylekarich Жыл бұрын
@@SessionGold I might - I have to be good enough to play the solo is the problem! I used to have some hardware modelers, I may purchase a Fractal again because it's my favorite & I think a good ecosystem in which to demonstrate these tones, which would be relevant to people. I sometimes use my pedalboard with my Revv D20 for analog examples as well.

BTW, if you want an SPX symphonic setting that sounds almost identical to the real SPX, get TH-U. The one Overloud made is ridiculously close to the real thing. There is a slight bit of top end that is missing, but unless you are A/B you can't tell.

@@kylekarich Its taken me many years, although I had some racks in the late 90s. I started playing in the late 80s as a kid, so here I am in my mid 40s, finally financially stable and able to do this. Although, man this vintage stuff was so much cheaper 15 years ago because NO ONE wanted it! lol
@lorenmorgan1931
@lorenmorgan1931 Жыл бұрын
With the rack thing, honestly I prefer plugins these days because the racks require either setting it and forgetting it, or setting up complicated midi routing to switch patches. With TH-U, or Amplitube you can get this easily, and switch on the fly. Or if you want the amp to sound as close to real as possible, any Nembrini amp in the loop, and then use Amplitube or TH-U as a pedalboard before the amp, and another instance after Nembrini (or NAM) if you want to use things like the SPX Symphonic. And the other thing about this new golden age we are in, the plugins are getting so good that 5 updated plugins 5 years from now, will no doubt be better than their difficult analog counterparts. Also, the great thing about plugins, they are cheap and take no space, and they dont break. :)
@kylekarich
@kylekarich Жыл бұрын
@@lorenmorgan1931 are they that different? I wouldn't expect them to be so different since they are both made by Overloud. Figured it was the same thing in a different format.

This is a great guide to getting into that sound. I use the Klark Teknik 3rd Dimension splitting into stereo with a Boss SE50 for stereo pitch detune mixed in parallel

I fairly recently obtained a few pedals for schmo tone (even before I ever heard that term)... because playing some of the sounds with multiple amps is just plain fun. It feels good. I haven't watched much of this video yet. I had a boss chorus CE2 for years and had several delays, but I wasn't trying to get those tones before. But I got the itch and picked up some items I thought would help. I got a Keely 30ms, a TC Electronic SCF and a Walrus Eras distortion to help me go further. I almost got an Eventide Tri Chorus but I ended up choosing the TC SCF.

Amazing content bro! I would add to the list the TC 1210 and the A/DA STD-1 (stereo tapped delay - Holdsworth used it widely in his clean sounds). Both are amazing and can be used to schmo your sound to the max

@kylekarich
@kylekarich Жыл бұрын
Thank you! How do you like that MD-500? I had one for a bit and really liked the more "boss" sounds in there like Dimension & most of the choruses, but I found it didn't really work for a lot of more oldschool front of amp effects I like, like phaser & Flanger. Been thinking about grabbing one again but just for FX loop stuff this time.

I still like putting a Boss CE-2 in front of an amps clean channel input, with the depth up and rate down, to get a strong warm chorus effect. The TC 1210 is another great legacy chorus effect in stereo rigs.
@kylekarich
@kylekarich Жыл бұрын
Yeah that is a great method & an entire other topic - what do you want in front & what do you want in the loop. Some effects work best in post but can sound great combined with ADDITIONAL effects like a chorus pedal. I love CE-s. Then there's stuff like Eddie-style flanger or phase which should always be in front IMO. You get such a different character depending on how you implement an effect in your signal chain.

I run the Eventide MP pedal, the Lil Wave, and a Strymon Dig on the modulation/time part of my board for mega Schmo. Got the Neunaber too which is great but the Lil Wave is the best Tri in a pedal I'm aware of. The original Arion Stereo Chorus is a good cheaper option-I actually prefer the original to the Vertex/Landau modded one. A cheaper more reliable way of accessing Symphonic is via one of the inexpensive post SPX 90 models Yamaha put out, FX500, EMP 100, they are cheaper, smaller and more reliable late 80s/90s models and all contain a version of 'Symphonic'.
