sorry for your loss. indeed schneider cpcs had english keyboard layout instead of german qwertz. cpcwiki states that the french version had azerty layout introduced in 1986 only. here in poland we mostly had schneiders due to proximity of germany; although not as popular as the atari8/spectrum/c64 trinity, it was anyway quite noticeable, as opposed to apple ii, for example, or msx (although i was lucky to have spectravideo msxs for a moment at high school)

Am I right in thinking you can still buy cassette tapes new so no Gotek or other solution required?

I greatly prefer the 464 over the 6128: it's easy to upgrade the firmware/BASIC in the 464, and also easy to add a modern RAM expansion & disk interface (such as Zaxon's DDI-5). www.sellmyretro.com/offer/details/ddi-5-floppy-interface%2C-ub-emulator-and-512-ram-in-one-36061 And yes, there's certainly no shortage of new cassette tapes and, if you're interested in collecting ... and actually using ... physical copies of games, they usually release them on cassette (for example, The Future Was 8 Bit) www.tfw8b.com/amstrad-cpc/
