Help me to understand this. Incarceration, lack of access to education, healthcare, indentured servitude and lack of access to societal resources are men’s issues more than women’s. How does feminist ideology fit into this narrative on these issues. Seriously, nobody has explained the connection and it’s difficult to grasp.
@noirsynapse3 жыл бұрын
Beth Ritchie explains it around 4:30 when she dissociates from carceral feminism that relies on more state violence to fight gender based violence for example. We also know what kind of offenders see the inside of a prison and those who don't most of the times. To me abolitionist feminism is not only about women's issues but a global one that affect the whole society, whether it's depriving families and communities from male individuals, depriving offenders from their voting rights and so much more. This feminism is radical in the sense it goes for the root problems: carcerality is one.
@itinerantrebel17993 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the insight. It’s been a struggle to understand the link between the issues that men face (lower participation in higher education, less access to healthcare and its correlation to substantially lower life expectancies, higher earnings but lower resource access, disparate treatment in family and criminal courts), and how it relates to feminism. Your responses helped to further my understanding. I’ll continue my journey and hope to gain more insight.

The countries with the happiest, least violent citizens have prisons that are focused on rehabilitation over punishment. I don't know if prisons should be abolished but I do know that if they continue to exist, they need to be places where people actually learn from their mistakes and how to be productive citizens instead of better criminals. Most people who enter prison are going to come out one day. Would you rather they come out with a better mentality than when they went in or would you want them to come out deranged and volatile from years of abuse in prison? If you choose the latter, you have made the choice that will guarantee that those who are released will go on to victimize more people when they get out. By punishing the incarcerated with inhumane conditions, the general public punishes itself in the long run.

Economics id not the only factor in incarceration. Culture is an issue also. The level of poverty more specifically the lowest quality of life, in the U.S., which is one of the wealthiest societies in human history, does not explain the level of violence that exist in society. This is further doubling down on rhetoric that will only galvanized the Right. Show me where working class voters on the Left, let along those caught up in the cycle of incarceration will/can do to make the abolishment of prisons a reality? It makes more sense to propose a 'domestic peace dividend' to the public - to refrain from anti-social behavior, which waste vital and limited funds, and use the savings, for all the life affirming areas that everyone says are underfunded. Prisons and police have no direct life affirming quality to them. Those qualities are secondary or subsequent to their primary function. The need for them, speaks to the worst of being human, and what is needed, especially in this modern society, to survive and sustain oneself. The best way to defund and abolish the police and prisons, is to make them largely necessary. Where is the proactive-ness on the Left? Is Russian at the border with Ukraine, because there has never been a proactive peace movement? We will never know. Being against war, is not the same as being for peace. Being against prisons and police, is not the same as being for justice and peace/order in society. Will there be another civil war, because we were not proactive for civility and socialistic living and governing? The living it must come before the governing of it.

@@sashao.1534 Abolishing prisons is a ridiculous idea it’s pure fantasy zero reality. If you believe that an individual is born pure and society creates the individual to commit crime than I understand why you would think so. Reality is not in line with your beliefs. Bad people exist and in a society they will always have to be removed from the group less they injure, kill , steal from others who don’t. History has no examples of the future you seek. Socialism has proven to have a negative influence on the minds of the people. Reform and change to the system is the only option and it’s long overdue. What’s been the biggest obstacle, there’s no single one rather it’s a big problem and the solutions are not going to be easy or simple to solve. There’s been an acceptable level of criminal behavior that our society has been willing to accept. That’s a debate in itself, zero tolerance is not acceptable to anyone on any side. So what is the acceptable level of crime for our country? Start there Then the next question is what are the methods available to achieve this goal? Honestly, these two have never been agreed upon by enough people to make a radical change in how we handle crime. This is reality not the case where you started
