I understand the frustration at the tragic loss. I was in the Navy as a helicopter crewchief and its very common for military aircraft to operate in civilian airspace’s because military pilots have to maintain the same proficiency as civilian pilots and need to practice operating at normal airports. We often used civilian airports especially with helicopters to practice approaches and other forms of landings. Additionally, military bases are often very close to civilians airports and are already in the airspace which means they have to operate in the airspace of a civilian airports. The biggest difference is that the DC airport is incredibly busy. It’s not uncommon for helicopters to be treated with less restrictions because they fly lower and often have to adhere to ceilings which provide seperation. The vast majority of aviation mishaps could have been avoided and is often due to complacency and human error. Knowing all of this doesn’t help with feeling the loss of human life, but I hope it provides understanding as to why a military aircraft was in that area.

I’m not a pilot, but I don’t need to be to back you that no Military flights should ever be crossing the runway area for heavy traffic Commercial landing zones. It took me 10 minutes of research to witness the heavy traffic and angle of approach. Much less dealing with Chopper Pilots doing “exercises’ at the EXACT OPPOSITE direction! It doesn’t take a PhD in Aviation to understand that (not directed at you) I even practice this safety concept in my automobile.. the greater the number of passengers? The more careful I drive and the earlier I leave to never be in a hurry. It’s the same principle.
@Tadaia6 сағат бұрын
The main issue as stated in the video is that there is simply too much air traffic in this area. Army helicopter error or not, with that much traffic and all the near misses an accident was destined to happen.
@todd-6175 сағат бұрын
1st, YES, the Blackhawk was communicating with ATC. It's surface based class B airspace to 10,000 feet. 2nd, you may not always hear military aircraft talk to ATC if you're flying a civilian aircraft not equipped with a UHF radio. 3rd, they have corridors that go under approach paths of runways. This is true all over the country. Not just military aircraft either. Law enforcement aircraft frequently go under the approach paths of major busy airports. Now, I agree with you that this accident is most likely the result of the Blackhawk not being where it was supposed to be. Most likely they were outside of their corridor limits and above the published altitude they were supposed to be under for airspace deconfliction.

Yes Trump's cuts and gutting of FAA did not help with the situation, but the interviewee makes it so clear that more than ever there (even before Trump was elected) that this is a bipartisan issue of lawmakers being bought out by corporations. Lawmakers are beholden to their corporate donors and not looking out for the well-being and livelihoods of the citizens they serve.

@hrundgren43526 сағат бұрын
@@TELEVISIONARCHIVES As it seems, according to a well presented break down from an aviation expert source going over the turn of events it does seem the helicopter is at fault. They did night time flight training on a flight path crossing over the Potomac going across the civilian air traffic inbound flight path. Dangerous as it seems, this is allowed by protocol and since the helicopter talks to the ATC/Tower on military frequencies and the commercial airliner talks to the ATC/Tower on civilian frequencies the commercial pilot never hears the actual conversation between the helicopter and ATC. The commercial pilot only hears the ATC talking to them on their civilian frequency. There was never a mutual frequency communication between the three. If it had been the same frequency, maybe, just maybe, the inbound commercial airline might have been able to pick up that there was a potential hazard. I did not know the helicopter was at the wrong altitude. But it makes the accident even more understandable.

The union of air traffic controllers should be restored. How could there be unauthorized air craft be in the same space with all the technology and surveillance that exists to allow for such a crash. More air traffic controllers not overworked are needed for the alert eyes to know who is cleared for take off and landing. This is not a simple accident, it is a tragedy that should not have happened. Expanded service is not needed, more trained eyes in the tower to control all traffic in the air and on the ground please .

This is the result of money in politics. Everything, including safety for airline passengers, is subjected to the amount of political money it is subjected to. Citizens United has struck again. Also, certain congress members wanted the convenience of flying into DC, thus increasing traffic.
