I still remember when Albury was a large yard with both standard gauge and broad gauge trains and they would swap the boggies on the waggons for all goods trains to go on to Melbourne and the Vline platform was still broad gauge and you would go rom Albury via Woodonga with the station there in the centre of town. I can also remember when you had the spirit of Progress going to Sydney but you stil had to change trains at Albury as the standard gauge still stopped there. Then they ran the standard gauge through to Melbourne. This was the time that Albury station started to die off to be just another country city station. I can even remember the last steam train into Canberra rom Sydney and they took it straight of the train and placed it onto its display stand outside the Canberra station and then let her fire die out and she never moved under her own power after. My fondest memory of Albury was taking my kids ther to see the Flying Scotsman and 1301 and then as they left we raced to the highway to see them and (I think it was) a R class and a S class running 3 abrest towards Melbourne flat out and that was the day my 3 kids got the train bug .
@Schony7472 жыл бұрын
My father who is in his late 70s has similar memories. The crane that used to swap the steel coils from the standard gauge to broad gauge still sits in the yard as well.
@beckster1812 жыл бұрын
@@Schony747 There used to be a long goods shed there near the crain where one side of the platform was standard guage and the other was broad gauge and they would hand transfer the loads rom goods trains from one to the other,this was untill they got the idea to just swap the bogies instead and had a crane to lift the whole wagon from one line to the other which was aster and much less manpower intensive. I think the last time i was in Albury station most on the old trackage and both the wagon crane and the one still there were there just not used that was about the same time of lying Scotsmans visit. I am 64 so your dad and I have likely similar memories of the end of steam me as a young school child and he as a young adult. I love your channel as it reminds people we also have a wide history with trains and some really good ones also. These memories are important or us to pass on also.

The locomotive on the plinth at Canberra Station was 1210, and was returned to working order in the 1980s. I travelled to Gosford behind it, and it went to Melbourne with 3112 in1988 as part of the Aus steam festival. I'm assuming that 1301 refers to 3801;1301 is a former NSWGR 4.4.2 suburban tank engine at Thirlmere, and hasn't operated since 1975

Thanks for the information on this. A question arising from this is what will become of loco runaround track, points and signalling at Spencer St and perhaps Albury? Usually the operators do not like the maintenance cost of track rarely used. If removed it will make it awkward for many heritage trains. But heritage groups would not have too much spare cash for funding these tracks. If removed then just would leave an unused space mainly.
@Schony7472 жыл бұрын
Run around track stays at Albury as there's normally an extra set stabled on that track. Nothing will change with Southern Cross as the Overland still needs the run around.
