I think it’s good that the exits have alarms on them. When I was in elementary school my bus did not have alarms on the exits, so when some older kids ditched the bus by opening the back door, my driver didn’t know until students started reacting. I also think those exit windows having the handles that flip to the side it a good idea, because I’ve seen a few of the handles that lift up get caught on coats, backpacks, etc. and accidentally open the window...
@SchoolBusSass3 жыл бұрын
I agree, having the audible sound is very helpful for the driver to know if the exits are being tampered with. I too have seen the window latches get accidentally triggered, by a multitude of items. The handles are not uniform, so that still can happen, though I don’t believe it’s commonplace.

there are actually 9 emergency exits. drivers window front door roof exits (2) window exits (4) back door
@SchoolBusSass3 жыл бұрын
passengers would likely have access only eight of the exits, but you are correct, the driver’s window could have potential for becoming an emergency exit …thanks for the unique perspective

Opening a window is not the same thing as exiting. Kids are supposed to jump out that window head first? It is like 8' off the ground! Are the other kids supposed to jump on top of the others? Fill the Bus, hit the Alarm and start the timer. You have 20 seconds

Hi Debra, Well, it’s going to depend on what type of evacuation you will be doing. If there is a fire on the bus, you would get the children to a safe place away from the bus, the mic and communication would not be applicable…same with a tornado or RR evac. District policy should dictate what specific protocols should take place for evacuations. With cell phones being far more prevalent, the radio would not be as crucial . The phones makes it much easier to maintain contact with base during emergency situations.

@@SchoolBusSass thank you so much for putting the link to the video I now know how they get the wheelchairs kids out the bus and my leg is feeling better when I got in my school nurse gave me some ice for it But I have one more question how do we kids get out the roof emergency exit? If you could tell me that would be really helpful because I don’t really know how that works
@SchoolBusSass2 жыл бұрын
The only time roof hatch exits would be utilized, would be if the bus was tipped on its side or submerged in water. The hatches have a knob or a latch which , when released, opens freely. The opening could then be used to exit the vehicle. I believe the hatch is demonstrated in the evacuation video. Well, only the release feature. Again, the roof hatches would only be used if the bus were on its side or submerged in water. Extreme emergencies only, not for evacuation drills or demonstrations.

Answers to the questions. Evacuation means leaving or exiting a area such as a building or vehicle due to a hazard or emergency such as a fire or hazardous materials incident. There could be as many as 8 or 10 exits depending on the type of bus. The exits of the school bus include the front door, the rear door, the side doors, emergency windows, and roof hatches. The front door is at the front of the bus and it helps you get out the front. The rear door is at the back of the bus and it helps you get out of the back. The side doors are at the side of buses and it helps you get out of the side of the bus. The windows could be anywhere on the bus and they help you get out if the other exits are unavailable such as in a rollover. The roof hatch is on the top of the bus and it helps you get out if the other exits are unavailable such as in a rollover or if the bus is in a body of water. When the other exits are unavailable such as in a rollover or if the bus is in a body of water. If the bus is on fire or is in danger of fire or if they are in a dangerous position such as in a area where they could be hit by traffic or is stalled on railroad tracks or in any other dangerous situation such as if it is near a cliff or is in a body of water or is in the path of a tornado or is near hazardous materials. A situation that would require you to evacuate the bus is if it stalls or breaks down on railroad tracks. No you can’t bring all or any of your stuff with you unless if it is in your backpack and only if the backpack is already on you. That is because in a real emergency such as a fire or if the bus is stalled in the path of a oncoming train you will only have between a few minutes or maybe even seconds to evacuate before the fire spreads and engulfs the bus or the train hits the bus and therefore have to evacuate the bus as quickly and orderly and safely as possible and getting your stuff or taking it with you will waste the few precious seconds and minutes that you have to evacuate and it would then get you injured or killed. You need to do the drills calmly and quickly and leave your stuff behind and get as far away from the bus as possible preferably 100 feet away from the bus. Possibly yes because split evacuations are used when both doors are able to be used and when you need to evacuate the bus as quickly as possible such as if the bus stalls or breaks down on railroad tracks and there is a train coming. Because the bus could be fully engulfed in smoke or flames in only 2 minutes or the bus could be hit by a train in only 20 seconds. Possibly yes.
@jfournerat1274 Жыл бұрын
Additional question. Where to go after leaving the bus. Answer. 100 feet away from the bus but where exactly to go depends on the situation. If the bus is on fire or it is near hazardous materials or in a hazardous materials incident you need to move upwind of the bus to avoid inhaling hazardous materials or smoke. If the bus is stalled on railroad tracks move towards the direction of a oncoming train at a 45 degree angle so that way you won’t be hit by flying debris from the bus if the train hits it. If there is a tornado then get inside a sturdy building or storm cellar or as a last resort seek shelter in a low lying area such as a ditch that is far away from the bus.
